Definitely some similar elements to Blood & Ash series, but distinct enough on its own. A quick and entertaining read.
The narrator has a lovely voice, but makes the main characters sound like they’re in their 40s when they’re supposed to be early-to-mid 20s… she does a decent job in this book, but things get worse in the next volumes.

This book was fantastic. Like others have said, I was skeptical at first, thinking this would merely be a retelling. But I was happily surprised to be drawn in right away and enthralled by all the added nuance in a beloved familiar story. I’m still chomping at the bit, though, to see what happens next with Poppy in her full primal form and ready for battle after AWOTQ…

Mixed feelings about this book/series

Hmm… I’m not really sure where to start. I could merely discuss the things I didn’t like about this book (and series)- like how the narrator changed character voices after the first two books, making Hunter and sometimes Emily sound like lackluster dudes- but that wouldn’t be very helpful for future readers. And overall, I did still enjoy the characters and their adventures.
As I read, I had this whole predictive narrative in my head of how the story would go and what would happen, and yet I was way off…but not in an “ooh, awesome plot twist” kind of way unfortunately.
I suppose I’ll jot down some questions I still have (after finishing), that will also give you a glimpse into the books and what I feel was a very disjointed story arc… perhaps these might be seen as spoilers, or they might actually help you understand what’s going on in the latter half of this volume and the series overall:
1. Only once (that I recall) do they talk about, or rather ask, whether there were other Goode twins in the ancestral line… shouldn’t that have been repeatedly hinted at or emphasized more if it was to be THE major factor behind the dying trees and the antidote??

2. Similarly, why use the term “Chosen One” without giving any other information or context to what that means or if it’s even significant?? I think it only shows up in this last book and would’ve been more impactful if it had been threaded throughout the books.

3. There are many fantastic potential nuggets of foreshadowing that go nowhere… for instance, why mention that if Khenti’s father dies it would end the hex and (as I possibly incorrectly inferred) Mercy would be healed, only to not try to kill him?? I mean, hello! if “only a god” could intervene, how perfect would it have been to have Khenti (a demigod) kill his father and then have Hathor (a goddess) pronounce justice and bestow ‘pardon’ onto Mercy (aka healing)?!

4. Why do the major threads all end up so anticlimactic??
-What happens with Kirk?! He just goes off with Mrs. Ashley and there’s no consequence or recompense for his horrific behavior?
-What spell does Hunter do to the town to explain away why her sister disappeared and why she’s a 16 yr old living by herself in the Goode home?
-Why do they all just accept Mercy’s fate, without invoking more gods/goddesses or the ancestors to exhaust all possibilities for hope?
-What happens to Khenti?? Does he take vengeance on his father and restore his mother to her appropriate afterlife? Is he pardoned by Hathor? Does he return to Goodeville? Do he and Mercy stay together?
-Why doesn’t the fact that Xena must go with Mercy into the Summerlands come up before the very last minute, as they depart? And how do they even end up in the Summerlands, when Xena clearly told Mercy she couldn’t get there from the Egyptian underworld?

Okay, I’ll leave it to you, future readers, to make your own judgement about the books. These really could have been incredibly good, with much depth, but unfortunately just fall short and leave a disappointed aftertaste. And it’s really too bad if this is the last book for these sisters. There’s so much that could still be done here…

Other than the narrator making some of the characters sound like weird nasally robots, this was delightful to listen to and very engaging. I’m downloading Ms. Morgan’s other books right now!

The chapters alternate between “now” and “then,” which made the novella a bit difficult to follow. Otherwise it was fantastic that Lily and Talbot finally got their story and happy ending…assumedly. :)

While I really liked that Jericho gets a happy ending after losing Eden, I almost couldn’t listen to the whole thing because of the male narrator’s voice. I’m sure he’s a perfectly lovely human, but his robotic monotone and the rough timbre were really hard on my ears. Thankfully, Bailey Carr returned to bring some coherence and a pleasant sound.
It could have been longer, going more into the magic lessons that Olivia went through, or more backstory or interactions with Jericho’s parents…and Liv’s parents sure seemed to accept the existence of magic and their daughter’s experience quickly and without much difficulty… overall, a decent spinoff with some great characters. I do wish Lily’s story had more depth and didn’t only involve her being held captive or being unconscious. :/
A Lily and Talbot story would be great!

A male voice for this book; minor improvement from the first narrator. Still has an “aged” voice for younger adult characters… The general narrative drags a bit, but Connor and Meara’s love story is sweet and their interactions are better written than the other two duos.

This one had the best narrator of the three books in the trilogy. Yet I still don’t understand why they chose older-sounding voices for characters in their late 20s-early 30s…the writing definitely would’ve sounded better with a more youthful voice.
I barely got through the first book (bc of the narrator), the 2nd book dragged quite a bit, but I didn’t want to give up on these characters. I’m glad I did; this 3rd book was probably the best narrative and focused on the forbidden (and most appealing) romantic duo.
Spoiler (maybe?): I don’t know why Roberts likes to put the most climactic, end-game-battle-type scenes in the last chapter of her books, but in this series it actually kind of works. I just wish there were additional vignettes or novellas now, so we can be a part of the weddings and housewarmings. Somewhat formulaic and cheesy at times, but overall an easy and fun series to read.

Quite a let-down after finishing the Dragon Heart Trilogy just before this. Other reviews sum it up- the narrator completely ruins this book and it was painstaking to get to the end. She has a very strong performative voice, but this was not the right book for her to narrate. I’m skeptical about the next two now…

Barrie Kreinik makes the characters come alive with an incredible vocal range and skill with dialect. The books overall comprise an engaging narrative that left me wanting much more from this world and these characters. This volume in particular, though, was probably my least favorite and had some issues with pacing- I spent much of the last half of the book wondering if the climactic confrontation would actually happen in this volume. *Spoiler Alert: it finally happens in the final chapter and left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. I really hope this wasn’t the last book to be written, despite the end of Odrin… there are many threads that deserve to be followed a little longer.
