Historia
Fiorello LaGuardia was one of the twentieth century's most colorful politicians—on the New York and national stage. He was also quintessentially American: the son of Italian immigrants, who rose in society through sheer will and chutzpah. Almost one hundred years later, America is once again grappling with issues that would have been familiar to the Little Flower, as he was affectionately known. It's time to bring back LaGuardia, argues historian and journalist Terry Golway, to remind us all what an effective municipal officer (as he preferred to call himself) can achieve . . .

Starts great, turns ugly!
Revisado: 06-08-24
As someone whose parents were born in Italy and who raved about the Little Flower, I looked forward this book and reading LaGuardia's history. Unfortunately, this book turned out to be a big disappointment. Although off to a great start, midway through the author decides to start using comparisons to current day politicians, eviscerating one's he dislikes while applauding those he favors. It was uncalled for, offensive, and distraction from the history of a great man. I immediately stopped listening and requested a refund.

Historia
In 1944, Benito Mussolini's daughter, Edda, gave Hitler and her father an ultimatum: release her husband, Galeazzo Ciano, from prison, or risk her leaking her husband's journals to the press. To avoid the peril of exposing Nazi lies, Hitler and Mussolini hunted for the diaries for months, determined to destroy them. Hilde Beetz, a German spy, was deployed to seduce Ciano to learn the diaries' location and take them from Edda. Drawing from in‑depth research and first-person interviews, Mazzeo gives listeners a riveting look into this little‑known moment in history.

Made me even more proud of my heritage
Revisado: 10-01-22
Just when I thought I had read every spy/suspense book about WWII, I came upon this gem. The 3 women went above and beyond to safeguard important documents, essential to the post war trial at Nuremberg. Lisa Flanagan does justice to Mazzeo's masterpiece. Once started, couldn't stop listening.....may even listen again! Congratulations for writing and telling a compulsive story of survival, love, and commitment to justice.

Historia
William Barr’s first tenure as attorney general under President George H.W. Bush was largely the result of chance, while his second tenure under President Donald Trump a deliberate and difficult choice. In this candid memoir, Barr takes listeners behind the scenes during seminal moments of the 1990s, from the LA riots to Pan Am 103 and Iran Contra. Thirty years later, Barr faced an unrelenting barrage of issues, such as Russiagate, the COVID outbreak, civil unrest, the impeachments, and the 2020 election fallout.

Every American Should Read This Book
Revisado: 04-26-22
Barr is direct and to the point, and offers ample support for the experiences he had as Attorney General. He also provides salient facts regarding many of the challenges facing America and summarizes beautifully where the country is and what’s needed going toward. He remains one of the best AGs in modern American history.

Historia
In the predawn hours of March 4, 2002, just below the 10,000-foot peak of a mountain in eastern Afghanistan, a fierce battle raged. Outnumbered by Al Qaeda fighters, Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman and a handful of SEALs struggled to take the summit in a desperate bid to find a lost teammate. Chapman, leading the charge, was gravely wounded in the initial assault. Believing he was dead, his SEAL leader ordered a retreat. Chapman regained consciousness, alone with the enemy closing in on three sides, beginning the most difficult and exceptional fight of his life.

Best Military Story Ever
Revisado: 04-11-20
As a Vietnam vet I have first hand knowledge of combat conditions, however the story of John Chapman --- how he got there, what he saw, what he did, must rank among the is the most remarkable military engagement's in military history. The courage and love of brotherhood is amazing and all the while brilliantly told. Thank you John Chapman, and God Bless you.

Opportunity Missed
Revisado: 06-23-19
As someone who's listened to Nicks since the outset and loved her music but didn't know the artist, this book would have been the perfect adaptation to 'audible books' by playing each song when the writer told a story about what was going on in her life at the time. Otherwise it was just OK.

Historia
Dereliction of Duty is a stunning analysis of how and why the United States became involved in an all-out and disastrous war in Southeast Asia. Fully and convincingly researched, based on transcripts and personal accounts of crucial meetings, confrontations, and decisions, it is the only book that fully re-creates what happened and why. McMaster pinpoints the policies and decisions that got the United States into the morass and reveals who made these decisions and the motives behind them, disproving the published theories of other historians and excuses of the participants.

A Compelling Indictment of America's Leadership
Revisado: 05-07-19
Turns out the Vietnam Vets we're not only disdained by their countrymen, they we set up to fail by their government. A must read for every American, with the hopes that this experience never happens again. The level of detail, the insight into the personalities of those involved, and the continuity and clarity of events, as complex as they were, was masterfully reported by McMaster.
As I finished the book, I wept for only the second time in my life -- the first was when I first saw "the Wall" in Washington, and this time, after reading "Dereliction of Duty", thinking about all those young men who perished and those who struggle today --- for what. The Country deserved better, but those who served and died, and those still struggling today --- they paid the ultimate price.
