I gave this book a chance…but it was difficult to finish

As a former fan of Amber Portwood, she used to be my favorite of the OG Teen Moms on the show. However, this book I must admit was difficult to listen to as it carried a heavy tone of narcissism throughout the entire course of the autobiography. It was quite hard to finish the whole thing. Toward the end of the book, what really made me want to instantly return it is when Amber had the ignorance & ableism to claim that the online bully-comments she receives regarding her appearance are as difficult to experience as a wheelchair-user who is unable to walk. Yes, she literally goes there. As a disabled person myself & wheelchair-user since childhood, this particular remark was very upsetting and sealed the negative difference in how I see her now. She has revealed her true colors through this memoir, and I am glad to know before I use any further credits on any future titles she writes.

I usually love memoirs, but Amber wrote this book in a tone that felt forceful in trying to create this positive image of herself and the constant gloating was a bit overwhelming. I’ll definitely be returning this one unfortunately, and if it were a hard copy I certainly would not be keeping it either, but I do wish all the best to Amber. I’m just not quite sure being an author or public speaker is her strong point. I can only hope she at least takes the time to educate herself as to the remarks she makes regarding wheelchair-users like myself, because it implies and perpetuates an ableist perspective to society as a whole, and can be harmful for the disabled community.

Readers be advised: several of the topics (such as the one mentioned above) can be quite upsetting.

This book was beautiful and so educational. From start to finish, it was filled with powerful deep insights people really need to hear especially in this time and age. That, along with Alok’s soft voice, makes for an amazing audiobook. Perfect for those short on timing but want to learn a little more about this topic. Well done Alok, you are truly changing the world.

Fan of Mr. Jay, not a fan of this book

I love Mr. Jay, and I feel bad as a fan to say that I didn’t quite enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. It has its funny moments, and a lot of comical references to real things that happened in the ANTM show, but the story didn’t really have any stand out plot lines. In addition, I felt like the narrator was a bit on the dull side and I think perhaps the book would have been better if it’d been read by Mr. Jay himself. Overall, it was so so.

I happened to come across this book at the most perfect timing, and as the author Richard Wagamese explains in these beautiful lessons, sometimes it is those magical little paths we encounter and special small moments that can take us to the most unexpected healing places in life. One of my best friends just passed away last week, and this book has been a very great comfort to my heart. Richard’s experiences and teachings about our spirits within and the connections we have outwards into all reaches of the universe, time, and space are deeply inspiring and soothing to the soul. I will most definitely be adding this to my list of absolute favorite audiobooks I’ve ever found. Thank you Richard for these beautiful lessons, and may your own spirit soar to the most wondrous of heights in The Great Beyond.

Classic to be Reflected On

The Secret Garden will always be a cherished literary classic for me, and this audiobook certainly brought all the magic and wonder I remember feeling while watching the movie in childhood. The narrator Carrie Hope Fletcher does a phenomenal job at bringing the characters to life, and I thoroughly enjoyed this listening experience.

My only critical note to leave, is that while this classic is one to be cherished for generations to come, it is important to reflect on and open discussions about the ableist undertones of the story. In the book readers will encounter parts that contain toxic ideas such as the trope of “anyone can get better if they only put their minds to it and believe”, which can be quite harmful for individuals with irreversible disabilities. It is also important to acknowledge the moments of story that involve period racism commonly used in that era, but I feel that as long as you can acknowledge and learn from some of the more outdated and offensive nuances of the story, The Secret Garden can still very much be enjoyed, loved, and cherished by adults and children of all ages.

What I was expecting from this book was a nice relaxing Disney based audiobook with a bit of mystery and fantasy, but what it turned out to be was an all out intense thrill ride not for the faint of heart!

The story itself is overall pretty good, but it was quite intense for me, and this is coming from someone who is age 30. Frozen 2: Forest of Shadows was filled with more than it’s fair share of heavy themes, between the Nattmara spirit demon that embodies your worst fear and several violent sequences including one dream sequence with a mention of blood, this audiobook had me at the edge of my seat, but in a very uncomfortable way I must admit.

I do enjoy the world of Frozen and this was a fair novel overall, but it’s definitely quite nerve racking and I would certainly not recommend it for kids, especially those under the age of 12. Still worth it if you’re an adult or teen fan of Disney and/or Frozen!

This was a beautifully written memoir that takes us alongside the author Samantha Allen on her journey embracing her true authentic inner self and growing to shine into the person she is today. As a trans non binary person, I could relate to several of the author’s experiences and found this to be a deeply moving story filled with both great humor and powerful messages of acceptance. Bravo!

This is a wonderful literary classic I would highly recommend for fellow fans of horror novels or anyone who enjoys a good timeless tale. More than just a monster story, it has a lot of quotes and moments that leave you pondering in your own internal reflection of what it means to be human. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, my only critique being that the narrator Dan Stevens read certain voices in a pitch that was quite unpleasant for me personally, though the actor himself is still very talented.

Silly & Comical

This was overall a quick silly listen, definitely not something to be used for relaxation or sleep. Mr. Muniz was not the best choice of voice presenter for an ASMR experience like this, nor were the sound selections included. I do enjoy ASMR, but not how it was presented in this style of narration and sounds. Although it was intended to be a soothing listen, I found it to be quite comical and it actually had me chuckling throughout the entire time. The theme and story could have had potential if it were done by a different narrator, but this ended up being just a humorous audio experience.
