Historia
In Searching for Enough, Staton draws on ancient and modern insights to introduce us, as if for the first time, to Jesus' disciple Thomas: history's most notorious skeptic. Like Thomas, we're caught between two unsatisfying stories: We want to believe in God but can't reconcile his presence with our circumstances and internal struggles. But what if there's a better story than shame? What if there's redemption so complete that there's nothing left to hide? What if there's a God who can heal your resentments, fears, and loneliness in such a profound way that you feel whole?

listened twice in a row
Revisado: 09-15-24
Tyler is so engaging and this book really flew by.
It is written for anyone who really struggles with their faith, and especially seems to rotate around doubt, looking at it from various angles. He does a character analysis of the infamous doubting Thomas; covering him like you have probably not heard before. This book is not only worth reading - maybe two times in a row - by you if you feel like you identify with Thomas... but to those who want to gain a deeper empathy for others who really struggle with their perception of themselves and with God. Maybe, after reading this, the church can open up space to discuss this prevalent situation more. One-on-ones are probably ideal, but imagine if we were all prepared to hear someone bravely confess this at church. Either way, I feel more equipped by many of the memorable explanations of Jesus' response.
My husband could not stop going on about Tyler's other book, 'Praying like Monks...' so that will have to be next.

Love Mortimer! can't stop talking about him to my family, lol. We can all give our attention to this wise contributor to society. We can reclaim our education, we can train ourselves in the lost arts of thinking, speaking and most importantly, listening!

Historia
What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the aristocrat? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace."

Student of Christ teaches all who claim the same.
Revisado: 11-10-23
A classic staple going through the distinguishing marks of a true Christ follower. Depth & simplicity. Some ideas articulated have almost slipped by me. What I discerned but didn't fully understand, he explained while anchoring me further in Christ. The "spiritual desires of the flesh" (towards the end) is something that is anything (whether seemingly super spiritual or very worldly), that is in fact outside of Christ - whether one knows it or not. As a matter of fact, one in this space is unlikely to see themselves as being outside of Christ. and it should encourage one who never feels he is "getting there", but isn't giving up.

It pays to understand that none of this is new. The rhizomes go far back. When we examine, ultimately the fruit, of such growth...we would be wise to consider how we want our garden to grow. 👩🌾🧑🌾...👰🤵...👩🍼

Will need to re-listen to this one and press in a little more to each area where I know I can grow. At some point, I may feel that I don't need this book anymore, but until then...it will provide an important resource for this stage of life that I find myself in once we began launching our kids. I am so glad that she is a fellow homeschool Mom, because she answered my very specific questions. Really, her book just picks up where the Holy Spirit had already been guiding me already.

Historia
In her late 30's, Rosaria encountered something that turned her world upside down - the idea that Christianity, a religion she had regarded as problematic, might be right about who God was. That idea seemed to fly in the face of the people and causes that she most loved. What follows is a story of what she describes as a train wreck at the hand of the supernatural. These are her secret thoughts about those events, written as only a reflective English professor could.

Her story will push wider whatever boundaries we didn't mean to put on God. Our lives, our minds, or hearts and our understanding all have limitations. Without meaning to, we limit God... who is limitless in love, holiness, goodness & justice. We are threatened by ideas, words, actions. He is not.

Historia
Alisa Childers never thought she would question her Christian faith. She was raised in a Christian home, where she had seen her mom and dad feed the hungry, clothe the homeless, and love the outcast. She had witnessed God at work and then had dedicated her own life to leading worship as part of the popular Christian band ZOEgirl. All that was deeply challenged when she met a progressive pastor who called himself a hopeful agnostic. Another Gospel? describes the intellectual journey Alisa took over several years as she wrestled with a series of questions.

A must listen for every believer, seeker or critic
Revisado: 06-23-22
We were told that false teachers would come claiming to be Jesus; that have, they will, and they are among us now.
Alisa aptly lays out the critics' argumentation of the Bible and their prescriptions, and why this constant questioning & criticizing leave us ultimately hopeless. This will help you determine if you are on the correct side of the fence & why there needs to be a fence. May it bless you.

Historia
From Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States to the New York Times' 1619 project, the modern Left views American history through the lens of competing oppressions, replacing the traditional understanding that all Americans are part of a shared journey toward the perfection of universal ideals. Their attacks on the values that built our nation, from the rights to free speech and self-defense to the importance of marriage and faith communities, are insidious because they replace each of them with nothing beyond an increased reliance on the government.

Over the past decade, A Patriot's History of the United States has become the definitive conservative history of our country, correcting the biases of historians and other intellectuals who downplay the greatness of America's patriots. Professors Schweikart and Allen have now revised, updated, and expanded their book, which covers America's long history with an appreciation for the values that made this nation uniquely successful.

Excellent high School History book!
Revisado: 04-08-22
Our Classical Conversations (CC) high school students used this book for their American History strand. it's a fire-hose of information that, in my personal opinion should be spread over two high school years. It spawned great conversations when we met once a week throughout the school year (the high school Juniors worked independently through the material). I can't wait to see how the revision reads when it includes the last 2 years that we have all lived through.
For me, the theme for this book became, "The more things change, the more they stay the same".
