Historia
In 2013, Ayaz Virji left a comfortable job at an East Coast hospital and moved to a town of 1,400 in Minnesota, feeling called to address the shortage of doctors in rural America. But in 2016, this decision was tested when the reliably blue, working-class county swung for Donald Trump. Virji watched in horror as his children faced anti-Muslim remarks at school and some of his most loyal patients began questioning whether he belonged in the community. Virji wanted out. But in 2017, a local pastor invited him to speak at her church....

An Informative Memoir to Recommend
Revisado: 09-27-24
I enjoyed this memoir immensely . As a Caucasian east coaster who spent many years in the Midwest as an educator, I can relate to the author’s journey. I’m back on the east coast outside Boston. With two immigrant Muslim neighbors in medicine , I’ve shared this title. I do hope it can help them navigate the reality of their choices in this culture. Of course most people I know are concerned about the political / cultural divide and navigating the hateful undercurrents. Respect and love are the answer in this book, giving the reader some hope. May we keep trying as the author is doing. It’s a gift that he didn’t leave the USA in my opinion.

Historia
Eudora Honeysett is done with this noisy, moronic world - all of it. She has witnessed the indignities and suffering of old age and has lived a full life. At 85, she isn’t going to leave things to chance. Her end will be on her terms. With one call to a clinic in Switzerland, a plan is set in motion. Then she meets 10-year-old Rose Trewidney, a whirling, pint-sized rainbow of sparkling cheer. All Eudora wants is to be left alone to set her affairs in order.

Touching Intergenerational Story
Revisado: 09-13-24
I liked the development of the main character devoted to family before self. Loyalty and peace making are admirable traits but often a risk to one’s happiness. It was an emotionally touching story given the wisdom and joy acquired over time.

Historia
Brilliantly funny, frank, and shattering, this is the bittersweet memoir by Peter McGough of his life with artist David McDermott. Set in New York’s Lower East Side of the 1980s and mid-1990s, it is also a devastatingly candid look at the extreme naiveté and dysfunction that would destroy both their lives.

Fascinating Autobiography of an Artist
Revisado: 08-29-24
This biography was interesting to me as a former New Yorker from an earlier era. I lived in the Village during Stonewall, and my mother did too as a young adult. The struggles of the LGBT communities should not be forgotten as this book demonstrates. A few times I was unclear about the art while listening , but managed to keep up. Viewing some of their art online helped. It’s humorous, sensitive and enlightening.

Historia
There is an ancient Chinese proverb that states, "Two tigers cannot share the same mountain." However, in East Asia, there are three tigers on that mountain: China, Japan, and Korea, and they have a long history of turmoil and tension with each other. In his latest entertaining and thought-provoking narrative travelogue, Michael Booth sets out to discover how deep, really, the enmity is between these three "tiger" nations and what prevents them from making peace.

USEFUL HISTORY FOR A NON HISTORIAN
Revisado: 08-20-24
I enjoyed listening to this book with clear demarcations of the three primary cultures and their interactions. It helped make present day cultural and political tensions understandable. Also, some cultural linguistic transmissions were noted, not just conflicts.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

I’m glad I read scientist Sy Montgomery’s little non fiction book about her friendship with an octopus. It made this romp of a domestic mystery, coming of age story, humorous insightful adventure more fun! Thank you dear author and narrator.

Charming Characters
Revisado: 04-27-23
I started on the printed copy for book group. The primary four characters were charming and developed. However, it was confusing to go in many directions. That may be the journey of this genre which isn’t my favorite . The evident humor upon listening in this format made it possible for me to enjoy. It is a remarkable achievement for the author - his first novel!

Beautiful Story
Revisado: 01-08-21
The story of this country vet in an earlier time is inspiring and engaging. During this most difficult time (2020), it was a great escape into devotion , gratitude, care and respect for animals as well as people. The occasional music was a distraction seeming to belong on a tv show. However , others may enjoy it. The performance was masterful!

Historia
When we see a bird flying from branch to branch happily chirping, it is easy to imagine they lead a simple life of freedom, flight, and feathers. What we don't see is the arduous, life-threatening challenges they face at every moment. Beaks, Bones and Bird Songs guides the listener through the myriad, and often almost miraculous, things that birds do every day to merely stay alive. Like the goldfinch, which manages extreme weather changes by doubling the density of its plumage in winter.
