Historia
Steve Wheeler is enjoying retired life in the New Forest. He does the odd bit of investigation work, but he likes his familiar habits and routines. His days of adventure are over: adrenaline is daughter-in-law Amy’s business now. Amy Wheeler thinks adrenaline is good for the soul: she doesn’t stay still long enough for a habit or routine. She’s currently on a private island keeping world-famous author Rosie D’Antonio alive. Which was meant to be an easy job. Then a dead body, a bag of money, and a killer with their sights on Amy mean an end to Steve’s quiet life.

A witty, curly mystery that is easy to listen to and enjoy. Great characters, well narrated.

Historia
Aged 13, Theo Decker, son of a devoted mother and a reckless, largely absent father, survives an accident that otherwise tears his life apart. Alone and rudderless in New York, he is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. He is tormented by an unbearable longing for his mother, and down the years clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, strangely captivating painting that ultimately draws him into the criminal underworld.

I loved it. Mostly.
Revisado: 10-18-23
The storyline was wonderfully engaging and the writing was fabulous. I noticed at times I found it a bit hard to come back to. This was mainly towards the end in a section that felt drawn out and frustrating. But I think the character also felt the time was moving very slowly and so maybe it was not an accident that this was how I felt.
The narration was a highlight.

But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

So much potential
Revisado: 09-07-23
The account of Vera’s experiences in Leningrad was beautifully written and very moving. It made it worth listening to. The present day story, unfortunately, was repetitive and predictable.

Fascinating, but I still couldn’t finish listening!
Revisado: 08-24-23
I found the content I listened to very interesting and helpful.
However, after persevering through about two-thirds of it, I got to the point that I could not bear to listen to the narrator any longer. ☹️

Started slow, got more interesting
Revisado: 11-28-21
I liked the humour in this novel. There were plenty of moments where I smiled while listening. I did find myself a bit lost on a few occasions in the first half: there are quite a few characters to keep track of, especially when listening and potentially cooking/cleaning etc at the same time. Trading might make it easier. I almost stopped listening, but decided to persevere and I’m glad I did as it definitely all started to fall into place and there was a satisfactory ending.

Revisado: 07-24-21
I found this book incredibly difficult to listen to even though the subject interests me greatly. I ended up returning it and buying a hard copy instead.
