Historia
Leila Slimani was in her native Morocco promoting her novel Adèle, about a woman addicted to sex, when she began meeting women who confided the dark secrets of their sexual lives. In Morocco, adultery, abortion, homosexuality, prostitution, and sex outside of marriage are all punishable by law, and women have only two choices: They can be wives or virgins. Sex and Lies combines vivid, often harrowing testimonies with Slimani's passionate and intelligent commentary to make a galvanizing case for a sexual revolution in the Arab world.

Necessary book
Revisado: 05-26-21
While there are many feminist books in the West, outside this cultural area there is complete emptiness. I am from Romania and many of the things the author describes are true for Eastern Europe as well. Otherwise, indeed, the book could have been better, especially in the research area. But it is difficult to find fault with Ms. Slimani - she made a generous effort.

I think it is the best so far in the Penric series. I was wondering how it will be possible to bring in a romantic interest for Penric but it was nicely done.

The narrator has a quite strong American accent. However, after you get used to it everything is excellent and the narration is very good and clear.

Good book but read the middle part
Revisado: 09-25-19
The series is excellent and this book is no exception. However, the parts between, say 30% and 70% have been less good than the rest. I did not like the endless citations from a play you dont get to understand anyway.

Historia
From the time of Ancient Sumeria, the heavy infantry phalanx dominated the battlefield. Armed with spears or pikes, standing shoulder to shoulder with shields interlocking, the men of the phalanx presented an impenetrable wall of wood and metal to the enemy. Until, that is, the Roman legion emerged to challenge them as masters of infantry battle.

Engaging and informative
Revisado: 08-02-19
It is exactly what you would expect: a well researched military history analysis. When the author has to fill in the blanks because of the missing data, he informs the audience and, at least for me, seems reasonable in his assumptions. Also, he knows how to tell a good story.

It is an excellent book. Also, Connie Willis s theory on time travel actually makes sense and it is absolutely consistent throughout the series.

Historia
In her first novel since 2002, Nebula and Hugo award-winning author Connie Willis returns with a stunning, enormously entertaining novel of time travel, war, and the deeds - great and small - of ordinary people who shape history. In the hands of this acclaimed storyteller, the past and future collideand the result is at once intriguing, elusive, and frightening.

ranking to be seen in context
Revisado: 06-16-19
The context is that this series is exceptional. Well, this particular book is not as good as the first two in the series but it is still quite good by any standards. I will explain also what I did not like. In the other books one of the things I liked was the humanity of the characters, how they take decisions which are obviously wrong, how they forget important information just like any normal person would. Well, here I think it went too far. The choices they make are so obviously misguided sometimes that it is not believable. It happened in "To say nothing of the dog" but there was a clear reason there. Anyway, overall a very good, enjoyable book, just not as good as the first two. Certainly much better than many books I have rated with 5 stars. But the expectations are bigger here.

Historia
In this Hugo-winner from Connie Willis, when too many jumps back to 1940 leave 21st century Oxford history student Ned Henry exhausted, a relaxing trip to Victorian England seems the perfect solution. But complexities like recalcitrant rowboats, missing cats, and love at first sight make Ned's holiday anything but restful - to say nothing of the way hideous pieces of Victorian art can jeopardize the entire course of history.

funny, witty and intelligent, well written and well read, to say nothing of its "Englishness" (allusions to so many English writers and poets that is almost a course in English literature). Among the best books available on Audible.

Welcome to Fountain Reach. Ancient seat of the Aubuchon dynasty. Majestic setting of the White Stone tournament. Alex Verus' (not necessarily reliable) reputation attracts all sorts. Most are plain bonkers. Yet there's one invitation he just can't refuse. At Fountain Reach, Alex is perfectly placed among the noted and notorious to figure out why apprentices have been vanishing.

Plot problems
Revisado: 03-20-19
I gave 5 stars to the first book in the series. This one is not bad also, the narrator is good, the characters well described, simple but enjoyable. However, at least for me, consistency is important in a fantasy novel. In the first book the author made quite an effort to show the strong points and the weak points of Alex s diviner powers. He made an effort to comply with his own limits. In this book it is not the case. Alex should have used his divining powers several times and he did not. There are moments when you dont have to be a diviner, simple human intuition would help. Thus, the fantasy world created becomes inconsistent, Alex s magical abilities can vary not in accordance with a rule but in accordance with the whim of the author.
