Historia
On an island lives a boy called Peter and his band of merry lost boys, young forever. That is unless they get sick or killed by pirates or eaten by crocodiles or unless - inexplicably - they grow old. For some of them do grow old, and nobody knows why. One of these boys is called Jamie, and he was the first boy that Peter ever brought to the island. Jamie's lived there for longer than he can remember, and it's not all fun and games.

If the Grimm brothers wrote lord of the flies-

I really enjoyed this prequel tale, the narrator was perfect. Darker than expected, definitely not a story for the littles. If you liked this one, and the origins story aspect of it, I'd also recommend checking out Peter and the Star catchers, its longer, more light hearted and suitable for younger readers but still a very entertaining adult read.

Historia
Dave Pelzer was brutally abused as a child by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother. She considered him a slave - no longer a boy, but an "it". He was physically and mentally tortured and starved. The outside world knew nothing of the nightmare he experienced behind closed doors, and his father was aware of the abuse but turned to denial and alcohol. The abuse only fueled a determination to survive and become stronger.

Rough, heartbreaking but with a positive outcome.
Revisado: 01-11-24
This is not a feel good read, but its powerful. Thankfully has a positive outcome for the victim. I think everyone should read this to gain perspective of what they should be grateful for in their own life, and to be more aware of the possibility of real abuse situations. Maybe Davids story can encourage others to take actions that might save another child.

I always wonder what densely populated areas were like before they were all settled. this book takes me there. brought to life the love of the land and the feeling of loss that progress brings but also in a way that you understood why & how it happened, sure would have loved to see those marshes and custard apple Forest

I tried...
Revisado: 07-06-23
I wanted to like this book, maybe I'm just not able to focus enough right now to follow it and need to try later. literally listened all the way to the last 10 minutes and finally gave up.
there was a handful of a premises that were interesting, but I got so bogged down in the technical detail and descriptions I just couldn't get my imagination around everything enough to follow it. first time I've ever said this about a book, but I'm going to have to wait for the TV show about this one and hope I can make sense of it better from there.

great story! thank you audible for free + catalog
Revisado: 02-19-23
so far I have been enjoying pretty much anything from Elmer Kelton.
good stories, superb narration. and each one has its own unique characters. this one may have started out a little slower but I loved the added drama about halfway through and listening to how it would all play out to the very last minute.
the added bonus is I found that several of his shorter books are available with Audible account free, I will be listening to all of them!

enjoyed it
Revisado: 01-01-23
this isn't the epic or Orson S. card story like you find in the ender series, but it was still enjoyable.
was a little dark since it dealt with some child violence so that could be a trigger for a few people although I don't feel like it was overly graphic.
the argumentative banter between the characters got a little tedious at time but I also enjoyed the wit woven in. which is very much a osc style that I have noticed. I listen to him primarily because I like all of his words and thoughts that he intertwines into his stories.

better than the first!
Revisado: 10-22-22
This was written as a sequel to Slaughter, which I enjoyed but felt fairly neutral about it.
the main benefit was since I had also listened to the first book I felt like I had more insight on the characters.
I think this story carries enough of its own weight that it would also work as its own standalone.
I liked this better than the first book. I enjoyed the characters an events that brought this all together.
