Classic Westlake
Revisado: 04-11-25
Of the 30-40 Westlakes I’ve read &/or listened to, 1 or 2 haven’t stood up. This is another of his classic fast moving crime/noir novels & exactly what I want from him. His comic crime novels are also excellent & his Parker series (under Richard Stark) is not to be missed if you want hard boiled heist style capers.

Historia
Graduate student Tom Rice is thrilled to embark on his first deep-space archeological expedition. He is part of a team from Earth, venturing out in search of artifacts from a civilization that ruled the universe many millennia ago. Called the High Ones, the members of this long-gone society left tantalizing clues about their history and culture scattered throughout space. One such clue, a "message cube" containing footage of the ancient ones, is more interesting than all of the others combined. It seems to indicate that the High Ones aren't extinct after all.

Silverberg has many great & classic novels but this felt like it was written by a much lesser talent.

Great book

So much in this to think about. Racial issues yes, of course, but also how the past affects us and how we can never know for certain if we have slightest comprehension of what life in another time was truly like.

Historia
Joe Bodenland has figured out how to manipulate time—a discovery that leads him to Utah and an impossible sixty-five-million-year-old human gravesite. He learns of the existence of a monstrous race of intelligent predators as old as the dinosaur, and of the remarkable "train" the undead creatures use to travel back and forth from a Paleolithic past to a future in which Homo sapiens are enslaved cattle. Joe commandeers the ghostly transportation and rides it back to Victorian England, where he enlists the aid of a powerful ally, the author Bram Stoker, in the battle to secure Earth.

Good sequel of sorts to FU
Revisado: 11-11-24
This is very good with nice bits of historical detail. I think I prefer Frankenstein Unbound partially due to involvement of Percy & Mary Shelley, Byron, Polidori, & meshing it with the “real” Victor and his monster.

Historia
Some years into the twenty-first century, a newly devised weapon of mass destruction will do far worse than kill; it will disrupt time and space. Suddenly, land, buildings, animals, and people are falling through "timeslips" and being transported briefly back to earlier eras. One of these inadvertent time travelers, Joe Bodenland, is shocked when he finds himself parked outside a villa on the shore of Lake Geneva—and soon after, unbelievably, in the presence of nineteenth-century literary luminaries Lord Byron and Percy Shelley, along with Shelley's very enticing fiancee, budding author Mary.

Excellent
Revisado: 11-02-24
Far better than I remembered from reading long ago. Intelligent alternate reworking of Frankenstein with historical figures of Mary & Percy Shelley and Byron all co-existing (kind of) in same world as Victor F & his creature. Musing on gothic themes & science as well and how all advancements can become dangerous creations in our age & through time. Reminded me also a bit of Clarke’s Time series with fractured time eras co-existing.

Historia
In a future where the Earth has been savaged by overpopulation and over-farming, robots are considered more valuable than humans, and sand must be altered to create artificially fertile soil. Ex-convict Knowle Noland, the hallucinating sea captain of the Trieste Star, finds himself wrapped up in a plot to incite a global war that will wipe out millions. War, it seems, is the only way to drastically reduce the population and create a better world for those who survive.

Not great
Revisado: 09-12-24
I wasn’t that enthralled with Earthworks. There were some good ideas: overpopulation, pollution, earth not able to provide enough food. But overall I didn’t find the story to be that engaging, nor did I find the main character to be interesting. Maybe it was the writing style, but ultimately I didn’t think much really happened—sure there were episodes of “action” but by the end I thought, well, what really happened; & at least it was short. Aldiss is batting about 500 with me; there are several “classics” of his I want to try but so far of 3-4 I really only liked 1, Non-Stop, though he has some very good short stories. Maybe I missed something but it didn’t grab me.

Historia
Seventy-five years from now, the human race on Earth is in trouble - perhaps even facing extinction - because of the rapid evolution of diseases. A crew of young men and women travel to the moons of Saturn to investigate the biochemistry of the pre-life conditions there in the slim hope of discovering something that might save Earth. Nearly half of them have died on the way when the book opens, for they all have incurable diseases, doing most of their exploration with virtual-reality machinery.

Not 4 general SF fans
Revisado: 09-08-24
1/2 Life has many interesting ideas but I think they get passed over/left undeveloped or unexplored & buried by a hard SF very heavy with chemistry. I like all types of SF, especially the best written that I can see being taught/discussed in lit courses, but I’m afraid this one is restricted to Chemistry classes. I’m not a chemist. For me most successful novels of this type I compare to The Martian, or A Fall of Moondust—novels where the science of what happens or what goes wrong is explained well enough without being textbook didactic that you understand what happens & don’t lose the story & where the human element or affects on humans is major aspect. It can be done; it has been done. I have listened to several by Clement & have more Clement to actually read but I’m not as optimistic as I once was. He seems to vacillate between mildly hard & very hard SF & I think I prefer the mild more; my favorite thus far is Needle.

Decent end to diminished tale
Revisado: 09-04-24
Book 3 at least returns to current time & characters of 1st part: Wool. However for me the damage was done by exceedingly lengthy middle: Shift. 2 just plodded along for me & needed to be cut drastically to get caught up with 1. 3: Dust at least moves better but is by no means a nail biter. It too plods along with excessive mundane details until it seems Howey decided, oh crap I better hurry up, and then skips over a lot of detail/info/story to rush to end. I’d much rather have gotten to ending scenario sooner & gone a bit beyond to deal with adapting to new “world” a bit like Alas Babylon; Earth Abides; One Second After…. Sorry, but glad it’s over (even at increased speed) & hoping show skims 2 (or skips entirely) & pursues their much improved vision.

Historia
In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platforms that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. In the same year, the CBS network re-aired a program about the effects of propranolol on sufferers of extreme trauma. A simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event. At almost the same moment in humanity’s broad history, mankind discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall. And the ability to forget it ever happened.

Boredom not fascination
Revisado: 08-26-24
Hopefully the Apple series condenses the hell out of this book. Yeah prequel, so what: it goes on interminably (even at increased speed) & relates history leading up to 1, much of it already hinted at in 1, perhaps even guessed by astute readers, & should have done it in 1/4 of the space & then went on to more interesting story. Obviously fell victim to trilogy-itis & stretched perhaps 2 books into 3, this one being far longer than 1&3. I’m sorry but I hope Apple keeps developing their much improved version & skips this almost completely. I’ll do number 3, but I wish I’d pulled the plug on this middle junk long before the end.
