Heading now to re-listen. For such a long story, as a listener I had no sense of the narrative being padded out or ponderous. Really, really enjoyable.

I thought I’d like this more. There’s not a lot of substance to it. Likeable enough though the deadpan wears a little. And the verse and singing are pants.

Yearbook is a collection of true stories that I desperately hope are just funny at worst, and life-changingly amazing at best. (I understand that it's likely the former, which is a fancy 'book' way of saying 'the first one.') I talk about my grandparents, doing stand-up comedy as a teenager, bar mitzvahs and Jewish summer camp, and tell way more stories about doing drugs than my mother would like. I also talk about some of my adventures in Los Angeles, and surely say things about other famous people that will create a wildly awkward conversation for me at a party one day.

If only all autobiography...
Revisado: 05-21-21
...got as close to doing its job properly as this one. Imagine!? You get some insight to someone, how they are who they are, where they’ve been in their lives, their points of view, their honesty, strength, frailty, confoundedness in the face of ignorance and some horrific realities (vile and blatant antisemitism) All set in these current times where dignity has often been traded for mammon. I liked Seth. Now I really like him and look forward to what I hope will be for him a long fruitful time in and out of the public eye. And his next piece of writing. He can write. He should do a bunch of essays on themes close to his heart or themes that hurt his heart. If he can make time. Of course.

Yeah, yeah, the usual. A crime. A corpse. A killer. Heard it. Except this stiff happens to be a Ponsonby, scion of a venerable Edinburgh medical clan, and the manner of his death speaks of unspeakable things. Why is the body displayed like a slice of beef? How come his hands are digitally challenged? And if it's not the corpse, what is that awful smell?

Abridged!!! Why!!?
Revisado: 02-10-21
The heft of this novel is cruelly dispatched by this hatchet job. Abridged, indeed. I could have lived without all the guitar nonsense. Wouldn’t have missed listening to the story though and I’ve downloaded the next book in the series. A more satisfactory 13 hours worth. David Tennant, eh!! Bright future that lad.

Great fun
Revisado: 03-13-18
A lark of a story. Not breaking any new ground and not particularly original either. But very satisfying, engaging, fully rounded, and I’ll be back for more.
The reader, however, can do an English accent, an almost passable Scottish accent, and a Caribbean accent. Characters not English or Scottish, sound like they’ve come from The Caribbean. Most perplexing.

Historia
Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home.

Evocative
Revisado: 03-03-18
Unvarnished truthful documentary, well edited and structured, and read by Martin Sheen. While the evocation is marvellous and oddly beautiful, it doesn’t step back from the heroism met with ingrained racial prejudices in play.

Historia
When singer, musician, and broadcast journalist Malka Marom had the opportunity to interview Joni Mitchell in 1973, she was eager to reconnect with the performer that she'd first met late one night in 1966 at a Yorkville coffeehouse. More conversations followed over the next four decades of friendship, and it was only after Joni and Malka completed their last recorded interview, in 2012, that Malka discovered the heart of their discussions: the creative process.

At last, Joni in her true voice
Revisado: 03-03-18
Too often I’ve read Joni in interview and rankles at the tone communicated. As ever, the voice and agenda of the interviewer prevails. Not here. Malka brings the truest most believable experience most of us will have of this unique artist.
A few errors by the reader annoyed those of us more fully familiar with Joni Mitchell’s work.

Historia
This is the story of a grand scientific quest: the quest for a unifying theory of nature. Writing with dazzling elegance and clarity, Nobel Prize - winning physicist Steven Weinberg retraces the steps that have led modern scientists from relativity theory and quantum mechanics to the notion of superstrings and the idea that our universe may coexist with others. Along the way, he voices the questions that are always present: Why does each explanation of the way nature works point to other, deeper explanations?

Historia
Held to be Dickens' finest novel, containing one of the most vast, complex and engaging arrays of minor characters and sub-plots in his entire canon. Memorable characters include the menacing lawyer Tulkinghorn, the friendly, but depressive John Jarndyce, and the childish and disingenuous Harold Skimpole, as well as the likeable but imprudent Richard Carstone. A suspenseful tale about the injustices of the 19th-century English legal system. This novel set the standard for modern day legal thrillers.

Ruined by the Reader
Revisado: 12-13-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The book is a good read. It's a great addition to the Dahl cannon. The return of the characters from previous work is effortless.
What was one of the most memorable moments of To the Top of the Mountain?
No, I can't say there was one. I liked the book's momentum, sense of place and character.
How could the performance have been better?
A different reader. One who understands when less is more. Some awful voices, completely at odds with the book (as I read it, and i *have* read it) it's place, pace and characters. If I encounter this reader again, I won't but the book to listen to.
Do you think To the Top of the Mountain needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I would like to see the team working again as a team or as individuals or paired. I think they're fully formed and tractable as characters that they could carry stories in their own right.
Any additional comments?
Never employ the reader again.
