Historia
The year 12,090 AD. It is a dark time for the world. Humanity is just crawling out from under 300 years of domination by the race of vampires known as the Nobility. The war against the vampires has taken its toll; cities lie in ruin, the countryside is fragmented into small villages and fiefdoms that still struggle against nightly raids by the fallen vampires - and the remnants of their genetically manufactured demons and werewolves.

A Dramatic Reading for a Dramatic Story
Revisado: 11-19-24
Cons: None of the Vampire Hunter D stories are realistic. They are overly dramatic, like reading an anime. The physics just don't work. This used to irritate me sometimes until...
Pros: I found this novel on audio, read by a professional dramatic reader. The story should not be read like a normal novel. The dramatic writing needs a dramatic reading. Suddenly, with the right pauses and tones, the story turned into a delightful romp through futuristic horror. The plot itself is fun and the main character will always be my favorite, but this particular novel has the added bonus of attaching an adoring child to D and giving him a very brief interest in a girl. Very highly recommend this reading and the story itself to anyone who enjoys vampire books.

A documentary, not a novel
Revisado: 07-01-24
If you're looking for a diary, that is how this reads. It's depressing and sad and void of heroism. It's like Ann Frank and 1984 rolled into one, under the guise of a national Christian cult.
On the other hand, if you're looking for plot with heroism and the shining beacon of hope, this is one of the rare cases in which the Netflix series is better.
If you come here from Netflix, the book may be a bit of a letdown, but it will give you a little insight into the protagonist's thoughts during certain moments.
Other than mispronouncing the word "fillet", once, the reader did a really good job.

Fantastic Young Adult Classic.
Revisado: 06-20-24
This story ranks right up there with Old Yeller and Charlotte's Web. Enjoyable story for all ages and masterfully read. Alex bonds with a wild stallion that loves to run. I find it better than the movie because his father is still alive.

Historia
In Geisha, a Life, Mineko Iwasaki tells her story, from her warm early childhood, to her intense yet privileged upbringing in the Iwasaki okiya (household), to her years as a renowned geisha, and finally, to her decision at the age of 29 to retire and marry, a move that would mirror the demise of geisha culture. Mineko brings to life the beauty and wonder of Gion Kobu, a place that "existed in a world apart, a special realm whose mission and identity depended on preserving the time-honored traditions of the past."

Good story, but reader whispers too much
Revisado: 06-19-24
Like many, I came here from Memoirs. I had thought Memoirs was a true story and was startled to find it was not only fiction, but also written by a man. I'm glad we do get a true autobiography from a geiko. I appreciate her story and the fact that she told as much as she did.
The reader has an okay voice (when she has a voice) and I like how easily and clearly she handles the Japanese. However, sometimes her voice is completely gone. She whispers. Not because the dialog was meant to be a whisper, but more because she has a very weak voice. Sometimes she sounds like she's trying to read the book outloud without waking someone nearby. Other than that, though, she does well.

Masterful reading of masterful writing
Revisado: 06-05-24
O'Henry's sorry stories are a classic, capturing American life in moments of comedy and tragedy, hope and despair. The reader did an excellent job of bringing each story to life, even handling German, French, and Spanish well.

Good Performance, but can't save the writing
Revisado: 05-17-24
Story started out interesting: a delve into the creation of Weapon X from the viewpoint of Logan. It continued with a lot of extraneous and sadistic violence and torture. Some readers may enjoy that, others may be sickened. Then it devolved into complete inaccuracy according to established canon. Logan remembers far too much of what happened and who he is after he finally escapes the facility. In addition, the author uses words however he pleases, regardless of what they mean. The most comical offense was the sentence, "His head literally leapt off his shoulders." I laughed at the image of a head with little legs leaping off the shoulders and sticking the landing on the floor. I suppose it ran away after that.
The reader did a fantastic job, though, giving life and a unique voice to each character. To bad that couldn't distract me from the terrible writing.

Early Weapon X
Revisado: 05-03-24
If you're looking for violence, this story has it. This is an early Weapon X story in which Logan attempts to find his humanity while others test his regenerative abilities in an effort to capture him. lots of interacting characters along the way and reader does a fantastic job of giving each a unique voice.

Not bad, but not my cup of tea
Revisado: 04-25-24
Every Wolverine story begins with the question: Does he know? If yes, does he remember? The answer in this book is no and no, but not for the reasons you think.
I'll give the story points for creativity, but it was a lot more soul searching than I would've liked and not as much action as I expected from a Wolverine story.

Way Better than the Romance I Was Listening To
Revisado: 04-23-24
When my last story turned from mildly interesting to nauseatingly "romantic", I fled to this novel, knowing that none of that tripe would be in this book. I wasn't disappointed. Lots of blood and guts, rage and raw grit. Sure, there's a girl, but it doesn't get sickening. Also, the reader does really well portraying Wolverine and making the other characters easily distinguishable.

Predictable ending, but still fun
Revisado: 04-15-24
If you're looking for half man, half horse creatures, this story is not it. All characters have only two legs. That doesn't make it a bad story, though. It's a very imaginative take on the centaur mythos. A strong tie-in to the Greek legends. The ending is predictable, so slightly disappointing to me, but not a bad ending. It could use a little editing in that some things are repeated more than necessary, but some listeners may not notice, if they don't listen to the whole story in one sitting like I did.
