Historia
To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies—The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon—that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force.

Historia
In this intimate and open account—nothing like any rock-and-roll memoir you’ve ever read—Alex Van Halen shares his personal story of family, friendship, music and brotherly love in a remarkable tribute to his beloved brother and band mate. In his rough yet sweet voice, Alex recounts the brothers’ childhood, first in the Netherlands and then in working class Pasadena, California, with an itinerant musician father and a very proper Indonesian-born mother.

A beautiful love letter to Ed.

I loved this. My only complaint is that it's only half the story. It essentially ends in 1985 and I wanted the other half of the story. Still, it's worth the read.

The complete "box set" of T. H. White's epic fantasy novel of the Arthurian legend. The novel is made up of five parts: "The Sword in the Stone", "The Witch in the Wood", "The Ill-Made Knight", "The Candle in the Wind", and "The Book of Merlyn".

Well-written and ultimately unfulfilling.
Revisado: 08-21-24
This book could easily by cut in half by a good editor. Lately I've been reading and listening to all the books I was supposed to have read in high school but didn't, and this was one of them. When the book is about Arthur and the actual legend of Arthur, it's really good. But when it goes off the rails, which it does a lot, it's not as good. And the entire ending of the book has a lot of stuff about ants and geese and becomes a long-winded treatise on man and war, and then just wraps up the story in a few paragraphs. Disappointingly unsatisfying. stick with Mallory.

I loved it!
Revisado: 07-12-23
I was at a production of Henry V1 Part 2 in Lennox, MA, where I was sitting outside the theater eating ice cream prior to the show starting, when I overheard a conversation between two women at a nearby table and they were discussing this book, which I had never heard of. I downloaded it on a whim and loved it from the first page. Fascinating, enthralling, and beautifully written.

A good idea that never pays off.
Revisado: 03-18-23
Ultimately underwhelming and a bit wooden. I really liked the character at first but she doesn't really go anywhere. I was expecting more of an edge, and more of a de-evolution into an even edgier character, but she doesn't really go anywhere. And the mystery isn't much of a mystery, and she keeps reminding us of her sleuthing abilities, but in the end she isn't much of a sleuthing. She's a good writer who needs better ideas. I was hoping, end expecting more.

Amos Decker's life changed forever - twice. The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good and left him with an improbable side effect - he can never forget anything.

The motive on which the central crimes in this story are based on is paper thin and utterly ridiculous. It's just another mediocre super-cop story. Overrated.

Historia
As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism.

Too little about U2...
Revisado: 11-30-22
During chapter 38 I actually yelled "shut up!" at my phone. Bono is a good writer and writes in a good voice, but he forgot that most of us want to hear about U2. There's way too much about politics and activism and saving the world and not enough about U2. In fact, in the 2nd half of the book they're almost an afterthought. There's a lot of hyperbole and overly grand metaphors and name-dropping and insincere self-deprecation. There's nothing less cool than trying to sound cool. I liked the snippets of songs included and some of the other sound effects; just wish there was more about U2. (One more line about "Condie" Rice and I would have thrown up. Disappointing mostly because how great this could have been.

Overrated and sickly in its self satisfaction.
Revisado: 11-14-22
It's a fine line between cuteness and smugness. I listened to this because I heard it was being developed to be adapted into a film, and then I couldn't wait for it to be over. I'm not a fan of "adorable" murder mysteries so I'm probably not the market for this type of book, but it just bored me to tears and I couldn't wait for it to end. It's like cake, but without the cake, only the frosting.

Revisado: 10-27-22
More than a little overrated. Too much exposition. I kept reading and hearing all these glowing testimonials about Henry Kuttner and was very disappointed with this book. It didn't help that it was a very uninspired and hammy performance by someone who isn't a very good actor and nearly has a speech impediment. Very underwhelming.
