Good story and great historical details
Revisado: 04-03-25
For any listeners of a certain age this will bring back a lot of memories and it is really interesting to hear many details of life in the 60s woven into the adventures of a special intelligence military guy. I was really torn about which woman I wanted him to end up with and I liked both of the main female characters as voiced by the reader. I think this was written from a personal perspective and was a good story, globe-trotting adventure and gave me a lot of insight into army life. This kept me listening and each different quest was its own story that took me from military and Vietnam years to Washington DC to Farnsworth's maybe retirement in the Florida Keys. It was a little disjointed at first until I realized it was flipping back and forth in time.

Listen to all 3 for a great adventure
Revisado: 04-03-25
The whole series jumps off to a fast start and just keeps going with the Pentarch Lorraine Adamant fleeing her murderous uncle in a quest to find support for ridding the Kingdom of Adamant of his treacherous plan to take over. The science is super believable and the plot is fast-paced even though I am not much of a science-fiction fan normally. I listened to the first book because I am a fan of the narrator and Almand did not disappoint. The Exodus Gambit and Old Guards were the first two books and the characters who survive are consistent and interesting and you can listen to the Pentarch mature through the series. The descriptions and voices of the other worlds positively oozed evil and it felt like a steampunk adventure or Mad Max apocolypse. And throwing in a love interest for Lorraine was a great twist. But I don't want to wait so long for another update from the Princess Adamant and her crew!

sweeping history and great characters
Revisado: 03-04-25
Although the ending was given away far too easily by the hints in the book, I still really enjoyed this. it described the feeling of the culture during this period through the eyes of women who experienced the Vietnam War, a point of view that is rarely featured.

This could have been totally excellent but it seemed like the cannibalism angle was just used for sensationalism. It made the story a little disjointed and awkward.

Heartfelt story and wonderful characters
Revisado: 01-27-25
This was intriguing and rewarding and it really involved you in the lives of Rory and Soline. The story was fairytale beautiful and captivating and I loved that it swept thru wartime France to present day Boston and back throughout the book. The accents for Soline young and old were consistent and believable although sometimes the older voice was hard to understand because the accent was a bit overdone. Overall excellent book and audiobook.

Worldwide adventure addiction!
Revisado: 06-23-24
This was a great adventure that I didn't want to stop listening! The main characters had me liking them and disliking them by turns but cheering for them in the end and I couldn't wait to listen to the other two. Reader just pulled me right into the story and the excitement and made each person real and relatable even different languages and accents. Impressive range and a lot of characters but not a problem keeping them straight and all of them were interesting individually too. I am waiting from more from author and reader but after listening to the Trilogy I don't think they can do a 4th one but if they pull it off I want to listen!

Revisado: 06-23-24
This was a fascinating novel on its own but then finding out it is based on a real person was even more amazing. Reader did an excellent job and I was inspired to dig deeper and find out what parts were actual events and what were historical embellishments. My new favorite author and reader!

Such a welldone audio book and inspiring for kids and also interesting to me. Alot of things I didn't know about Audrey Hepburn and she was much more than just an actress. My kids are going to watch some of her movies with me now. Narrator fit the part very well, too.

Sci Fi tech details and Adventure
Revisado: 05-28-24
This starts out with an attempt on Pentarch Lorraine's life by her uncle in an attempted coup to take over the Adamantine Kingdom. He has already assassinated her entire family and she has no choice but to flee her kingdom in an outdated star frigate. She makes a desperate plan to get assistance from Earth and flees to that distant goal. The technical details are interesting and really logical and the characters are real and distinct. I loved the gruff but loving mentor and protector Vigo Jarrett and you corks actually hear Lorraine mature from a young woman to a contender for her mother's throne. Great story and great narration and I am waiting excitedly for the next book.

Dark and intense cop "fantasy"?
Revisado: 11-08-23
This is a hard book to review but I really liked it. It is a cop suspense/fiction but also a little supernatural and a little like a Marvel comic book! A depressed and suicidal man tries everything to kill himself, but miraculously heals every time. He meets up with a female detective who wants him to use his "superpowers" to help out the department since he's bulletproof. Dinah's depressed, too, dealing with issues in her past, but finds a kindred spirit in Owen. Anything more is probably a spoiler, but this is an unusual audiobook because it has everything and even when it seems like a comic book it has real emotion and important deep dives into chronic depression. I think it is really good and got to know and like each flawed character. Narrator was excellent and made Owen's depression belieavble and real but showed compassion as he struggled to heal. I hated the ending and cried, And shed tears several times listening to this but tears of compassion and understanding of his pain.
