Historia
Meet the Geller sisters: Beck, Claire, and Sophie, a trio of strong-minded women whose pragmatic, widowed mother, Marti, will be dying soon and taking her secrets with her. Marti has ensured that her modest estate is easy for her family to deal with once she’s gone—including a provision that the family’s summer cottage on Mount Desert Island, Maine, must be sold, the proceeds split equally between the three girls. Enter C.J. Reynolds, an enigmatic Southern ex-con with his own hidden past, who complicates the situation. All is not what it seems, and everything is about to change.

No Surprises
Revisado: 04-07-25
There are no surprises in this novel. Every possible test is completely predictable, and yet I cannot say I didn’t enjoy it.

Historia
The first time I laid eyes on Henley James, I was mesmerized. The chemistry between us was like nothing I’d ever felt. Impeccable suit, dimpled smile. He was charming and gorgeous, sophisticated and suave. He gave me his business card and asked me to call. His dating game was strong; I was gone from his first smile. I’d love to tell you our date was a raging success, but it wasn’t. Far from it. I decided right there on that day that Henley James and I would forever be mortal enemies; I would never think of him again.

Unbearable

It reads like a poorly written nighttime soap opera. A definite lapse in judgement on my part.

Historia
Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the headmaster of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there. Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth.

The children
Revisado: 09-22-24
Found the narration much weaker than the first book, and the story, while compelling, to be approached from inconsistent perspectives, often very elementary.

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. And when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life seems too good to be true.

Confusing
Revisado: 08-20-24
It is a compelling story. This could have been a great book, and should have been. First couple of chapters were compelling and offered wonderful character development. Throughout the remainder, the characters fluctuated between short stints of adult conversation to juvenile he said/she said exchanges among characters to soft porn for teenagers. Very good narrator. Would not recommend it.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Historia
Thelonious "Monk" Ellison's writing career has bottomed out: his latest manuscript has been rejected by seventeen publishers, which stings all the more because his previous novels have been "critically acclaimed." He seethes on the sidelines of the literary establishment as he watches the meteoric success of We's Lives in Da Ghetto, a first novel by a woman who once visited "some relatives in Harlem for a couple of days."

Great Story, Mediocre Production
Revisado: 01-13-24
Loved the book. Loved the narrator. That being said, the narrator uses consistent variation in his vocal inflection, often ending sentences in an almost whisper tone. It would have worked beautifully if the production had accounted for those variations. Instead, I had to constantly adjust tone and volume or just replay segments over again in order to hear them. Very frustrating when listening to an audio book.

Historia
In his most important book yet, widely acclaimed author and speaker Brian McLaren proposes a new faith alternative, one built on "benevolence and solidarity rather than rivalry and hostility." This way of being Christian is strong but doesn't strong-arm anyone, going beyond mere tolerance to vigorous hospitality toward, interest in, and collaboration with the other. Blending history, narrative, and brilliant insight, McLaren shows readers step-by-step how to reclaim this strong-benevolent faith.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Narration Matters
Revisado: 02-28-20
Thoroughly enjoyed the story and the narration of Angelo Di Loreto. However, the narration of Xe Sands nearly ruined the experience. For me, she took far too much liberty in interpreting the characters and added an extreme amount of melodrama, and I found myself struggling to like characters because of the narration, not the writing. I believe this dishonors both the author and the reader/listener. Perhaps romance novels, exclusively, would be the best genre for her. Regardless, I will not choose another title narrated by Xe Sands.

Historia
In a narrative as beguiling and mysterious as memory itself - shadowed and luminous at once - we follow the story of 14-year-old Nathaniel, and his older sister, Rachel. In 1945, just after World War II, they stay behind in London when their parents move to Singapore, leaving them in the care of a mysterious figure named The Moth. They suspect he might be a criminal, and they grow both more convinced and less concerned as they come to know his eccentric crew of friends: men and women joined by a shared history of unspecified service during the war.

Disappointed
Revisado: 02-27-19
I had high hopes for this book. Sadly, everything but the narration proved quite disappointing. Total waste of my time - the only time I’ve said that about a book in 54 years.
