Historia
Over twenty years ago, the heiress Patricia Lockwood was abducted during a robbery of her family's estate, then locked inside an isolated cabin for months. Patricia escaped, but so did her captors - and the items stolen from her family were never recovered. Until now. On the Upper West Side, a recluse is found murdered in his penthouse apartment, alongside two objects of note: a stolen Vermeer painting and a leather suitcase bearing the initials WHL3. For the first time in years, the authorities have a lead - with the suitcase and painting both pointing them toward one man.

Extra star for Steven Weber
Revisado: 09-29-22
I wasn’t sure if this was a 4- or 5- star story, but the performance by Steven Weber always ups it a notch, in this case expertly grabbing the droll dialogue and giving it just the right mix of drama and reality.
Win is about as unemotional a protagonist as there is, yet hardly unexciting. His first person view through this tangled whodunit turns a typical mystery thriller into an entertaining tale that feels like the reader (listener) is right next to Win the whole time. Even when next to username Helena. :)

Engaging
Revisado: 12-01-21
A well-written, engaging thriller with few wasted words or scenes. For a topic that is well-worn, this was clearly heavily researched, making it feel more realistic than most novels of its kind.
The narration was fine as well. There were some pronunciations that threw me for a loop (accenting the second syllable in bureau— “bur-OHH”) but nothing to complain about. I never mind the attempted accents, either, because while every narrator isn’t Daniel Day Lewis, I appreciate the need to differentiate the characters voices somehow.

A bucket of meh
Revisado: 11-22-21
The story was plodding; from Chapter 1 until the end nothing much changed. The first seven hours of the book can be summed up in about two sentences. The writing left me caring very little for anyone’s plight. Lastly, the narrator made a conscious choice not to change inflection between characters. With two females as leads, both voiced the same and written with few unique qualities, it was often difficult to figure out who was saying what until enough context kicked in. I’ve liked Grisham before, but this one fell flat for me.

Fun listen
Revisado: 01-13-21
Like a sitcom whose only goal is to make you smile, this mini audio series plays to that strength and attacks us with the familiar, but in a funny way we can appreciate.
Performances are strong and the sitcom-like plot carries itself admirably to a neat conclusion.

Historia
For many of us, it’s playing softball with friends, under the lights, a cooler of beer in the dugout. In the late 1980s, author Rich Cohen, then a senior in high school, assembled a team of ne’er-do-wells - gear heads, burnouts, goof balls, and the possibly gifted - to compete in what Cohen considered the best 12-Inch softball league in the Lower 48. Think Field of Dreams, but, instead of a cornfield in Iowa, these games were played behind a grade school in Glencoe, Illinois, on Chicago’s North Shore.

Possibly cathartic for the author
Revisado: 01-13-21
This was a well-written excerpt of life over a couple summers for a suburban young adult with daddy issues. I think it only appeals to those directly involved in the story because there is seemingly nothing learned nor resolved from the tale, a d the ending is quite abrupt.
Because the author is skilled, I would have liked to have heard a follow-up to the final event and if he gained any wisdom from it.

Interesting but stretched out
Revisado: 11-10-20
An interesting tale, but the whole story could have been told in about 45 minutes, not four hours. The added length didn't add any depth to the tale. According to Audible, three stars means "pretty good," and that's just about where I'd place this audiobook. Note that it's not really an audiobook but a group of podcast episodes, so you occasionally get some rehashing of things you just heard.

Entertaining fictional history
Revisado: 11-10-20
While based in fact, this novel presents enough fictionalized drama and dialogue to make the listen extremely entertaining and worthwhile. The narration is top notch, and by the end I learned a lot about an era and location of which I had very little knowledge. The only knock would be the description of Pino sometimes comes off as almost saint-like, but the post script detailing his real life escapades humanizes him and gives him the flaws he obviously possesses.
