Historia
Nobody knew where it came from. Nobody knew why it came. When an eight-foot-tall man made of stone appears in the middle of a busy city center one July afternoon, two-bit (and antisocial) reporter Andy Pointer assumes it's just a publicity stunt. Indeed, so does everyone else...until the Stone Man begins to walk, heading silently through the wall of the nearest building, flattening it, and killing several people inside as a result.

A Story as Solid as Stone
Revisado: 01-26-16
If you could sum up The Stone Man in three words, what would they be?
Story, narration...fantastic!
Any additional comments?
When I'm on dishwashing detail at home, I listen to audiobooks to make the experience tolerable. Last night, listening to "The Stone Man" at the kitchen sink... well, let's just say that I was looking for more dirty dishes I could wash. The story is gripping and well-written, and the characters' thoughts and actions rang true. Matt Addis' narration was excellent, and perfect for this novel. Kudos to author and narrator--I'll look for more of their work.

Decent story, weak narration
Revisado: 01-01-16
What did you like best about The Defiant: Grid Down? What did you like least?
The plot is lively and moves along fast enough to keep the listener wanting to know what happens next. There were some deus ex machina situations that weaken the plausibility of the story, but it's never boring or even slow. The weakest part is the narration. The narrator has a nice voice, and I'm sure he could do a good job with other material, esp. nonfiction without dialogue. In this book, however, the characters sound so much alike that it becomes confusing. To add to the confusion, there often isn't enough pause in the dialogue to easily distinguish which character is speaking. It's also distracting to hear, e.g., a teenage girl character speaking in a middle-aged man's voice.
Any additional comments?
Overall, I enjoyed it, with the reservations I note above.

More, Please!
Revisado: 04-27-15
Having listened to and enjoyed the author's first two "Dead Eyes" books (the 3rd is coming late in 2015), I bought this and enjoyed it very much. Listen for a cameo by the narrator (or at least a version of him!). I hope there are more stories about "42"in the works.

I've never read Agatha Christie before, but this book is definitely a gateway! I'd recommend this to anyone, especially fans of "Dexter."

A fascinating introduction to materials science for the lay listener. It's a subject I wouldn't have thought I'd enjoy learning about so much, but I did.

Historia
Jake Halpern introduces us to a former banking executive and a former armed robber who become partners and go in quest of "paper" - the uncollected debts that are sold off by banks for pennies on the dollar. As Halpern shows, the world of consumer debt collection is a wild and unregulated shadow land, where operators may misrepresent a debtor's situation, make illegal threats, and even lay claim to debts that are not theirs to collect in the first place.
