Domestic drama with a tiny bit of superheroing

I think this book is very well written and well performed, but it is very much not what I expected. It is barely an action or "comic book" story. Instead, it focuses far more on the domestic life of Mary Jane and Peter and their financial issues and internal struggles. While that is an interesting topic and I think could be a very fascinating story, it is not what I was expecting with a book titled The Venom Factor.

Excellent Prose, Unenticing Story

Got through a third of the book before deciding this book isn't for me.
There is an in undercurrent of degeneracy that is intolerable to me. I find all mention of Duke Auburn and his exploits absolutely revolting and have no desire to finish the book.
The writing itself is well done and the exposition is vivid. The author even uses descriptions I haven't ever heard before.
But I don't enjoy the story or the characters and I'm not intrigued enough to see it through.
As for the performance, it felt like the narrator had three "voices" and there are so many different characters and so much talking that I kept losing track of who was speaking. It was passable, but I wasn't much impressed.

Entertaining & Fun

A good time all around. Commissar Kane is a tremendously entertaining character, and the narrator does a stellar job complimented well with the supplementary narrators.

Not My Cup of Tea

Firstly, the narration is excellent. Alexander does a wonderful job giving a voice to the story.
I think in the end, however, I dislike the style of Hawthorne's writing.
At times, it seems that he couldn't decide which manner of description he liked best, so he left them all in.
He described that monkey at least three different ways.
The story itself, for me, was merely fine. The long, loquacious details about almost everything felt tiresome to read and I didn't find the characters to be very engaging.
It just wasn't the book for me, but I don't think it is bad.

Decent, solid, safe

Decent MilSciFi with some interesting concepts. Quite a few very well done dramatic moments, but the story is very straightforward. Most annoying thing for me is how everyone keeps referencing 200 year old military slang because the author didn't want to develop new stuff for his universe. I get it, it just took me out of the story Everytime.
Narrator was only ok. Several times his vocal inflections go completely opposite of what the characters are supposed to be feeling, but it's not the worst I've heard.

Excellent Rendition of a Classic

Thandiwe Newton is a spectacular narrator. She tells the story beautifully and thanks to her skill, I have a new appreciation for the book.
And I now know how to properly pronounce St. John.

Very technically competent, if uninspired

I've been a viewer of the author's writing advice YouTube channel for a while now and I've usually found his advice to be very competent. As a way to show my appreciation, I picked up this book and gave it a listen.

I have to say that I found the story to be very competently written and technically well done; however I did not enjoy the book and was mostly frustrated by it. In this way, it reminds me of a lot of high budget films that check off every item on the list of what makes a good movie, but lack the spark that makes it truly good. Entry Wounds has an intriguing concept, fleshed out characters, character arcs, no wasted scenes, good use of foreshadowing and setting up plot twists, and the plot is always twisting and turning in unexpected ways.

Unfortunately I found every character to be annoying and, oftentimes, stupid. This isn't helped by the narrator's performance. This story is full of extremely tense and traumatic moments: people getting shot, threatened at gunpoint, watching loved ones die in front of them, etc. The narrator delivers all of the lines in these moments with a weird "aw golly gee mister" lack of emotion. Most people seemed mildly annoyed or bored when they're threatened at gunpoint or reacting to a loved one being killed.

I think a more dramatically inclined narrator would do a lot to improve this audiobook, but as it is I would give it a weak recommendation if you're just looking to be entertained.
