Historia
How did we become a world where facts—shared truths—have lost their power to hold us together as a community, as a country, globally? How have we allowed the proliferation of alternative facts, hoaxes, even conspiracy theories, to destroy our trust in institutions, leaders, and legitimate experts? Best-selling journalist Steven Brill documents the forces and people, from Silicon Valley to Moscow to Washington, that have created and exploited this world of chaos and division—and offers practical solutions for what we can do about it.

Just OK
Revisado: 03-19-25
OK but seemed a bit padded with extensive quotes. Also, the solution to democracy’s truth problem seems to be purchasing a license from author’s company for a product that provides journalistic guardrails. Maybe so, but comes off like a very long advertisement.

Book on Slavery?
Revisado: 08-30-24
Interesting book, despite constant diversions from the central theme to exhaustive discussions of slavery. Oddly, the author makes no mention of wage slaves and economic oppression. As for women, who, we are told, will be addressed in a later volume, the author explains why it was unthinkable that slave owners represented the interests of slaves but maybe okay to think men represented the interests of their women folk. Yikes!
The narrator mispronounced common names, and rolled the Rs in English and Irish names,
Still, it is an interesting work and I enjoyed it.

From the duo behind the massively successful and award-winning podcast Stuff You Should Know comes an unexpected look at things you thought you knew. Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant started the podcast Stuff You Should Know back in 2008 because they were curious - curious about the world around them, curious about what they might have missed in their formal educations, and curious to dig deeper on stuff they thought they understood.

A deeper look at random topics.
Revisado: 03-26-24
Can’t imagine why anyone “should” know any of this stuff. Interesting and well-presented, but there’s nothing special about the topics. It’s kind of the book version of trivial pursuits. Easy listening, though. I think most people would enjoy it during their morning drive.

Historia
In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison.

“Woke” but still good
Revisado: 03-01-24
Good listen but a bit “woke.” The main love theme is between two men, the captain is a black woman and the robots have feelings and resent Isaac Asimov. Still, once you get past the PC, a good story and excellent performance. Worth a listen

Better than prior installment
Revisado: 01-19-24
This book is much better than The King’s Deception, which I thought had a silly storyline. On the other hand, Berry seems to have an interesting opinion of law and justice. The historical background is first rate in this book and the story believable. I enjoyed this very much.

Not one of Berry’s best. Plot ridiculous. New characters unbelievable and not especially sympathetic, admirable or even villainous.

The Republic poses questions that endure: What is justice? What form of community fosters the best possible life for human beings? What is the nature and destiny of the soul? What form of education provides the best leaders for a good republic? What are the various forms of poetry and the other arts, and which ones should be fostered and which ones should be discouraged? How does knowing differ from believing?

Not sure if the original is so difficult to listen to. The Socratic method is important but the simplistic all-or-nothing format is unpersuasive. Could be the translation.

Historia
Originally published anonymously, The Federalist Papers first appeared in 1787 as a series of letters to New York newspapers exhorting voters to ratify the proposed Constitution of the United States. Still hotly debated and open to often controversial interpretations, the arguments first presented here by three of America's greatest patriots and political theorists were created during a critical moment in our nation's history.

Miracle Springs is a place of healing. Strangers flock there hoping that the natural hot springs, five-star cuisine, and renowned spa can cure their ills. And, if none of that works, they often find their way to Miracle Books, where, over a fresh-baked scone from the Gingerbread House bakery, they exchange their stories with owner Nora Pennington in return for a carefully chosen book. That's Nora's special talent: prescribing the perfect novel to ease a person's deepest pain and lighten their heaviest burden.
