a friend suggested this.
Revisado: 09-04-19
I am a fan of the Dresden Files series. A friend that knows this suggested the series based upon that. I enjoyed it. Instead of the central protagonist being of supernatural ability, he struggles as a mere human to fight the things that go bump in the night. There was enough tongue in cheek humor and self deprecation by the hero that he was relatable. It's easy to expect Superman to win... Owen Pitt has to work for it.

2nd time same as the 1st
Revisado: 08-18-18
I listened to the 1st book and thought, the big mission wrapped up with no feeling of reaching a climax. I decided to try the 2nd book. Same thing, it's like I'm reading a simple historical account of events. There's no build up, no tension, no peak of success...
And there's the narrator. I've decided that I can't stand his accents. His accents are all over the place. He also reads with as much passion and emphasis as the emotionless main character.
Speaking of that, if I had to hear about the "lack of emotion" that Noah has, I was going to delete the book without finishing it... the book actually began putting me to sleep while driving.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Different take on "small time crook gets in deep"
Revisado: 06-13-18
I wasn't sure where the story was going at the start. But aside from her maddening stubborn streak, I found myself liking Jasmine. Rosario did a great job narrating as well.

Historia
After witnessing the murder-suicide of his parents as a child, Noah Wolf suffers from a form of PTSD that has left him without emotion, without a conscience, and without the ability to function as a normal human being. With the help of childhood friends, he learns to watch others around him and mimic their behaviors, in order to conceal the fact that his mind operates more like a computer that he has spent years programming. That program is what allows Noah to pass himself off as normal.

Not a bad start
Revisado: 05-30-18
I wouldn't have minded if the first book spent more time developing the team and the team dynamic. It felt like that part of the story was a little rushed. Also, if I'm being brutally honest, there wasn't much suspense regarding the bog finale... it just kinda, happened.

Historia
Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

Started great, ending.... meh.
Revisado: 04-09-18
I found myself not in the "struggled to finish" category, but more in the, let's get this over with.
The first two-thirds of the book were great.
However, I found the last third a bit predictable and a cliche. I wanted to like it all of the way through, I LOVED Ready Player One... but when I figured out where it was going, my enthusiasm waned. My only global complaint about the story was that the timeline felt too compressed throughout the story. I think it would have felt better to take more time developing the premise before the big reveal.

This was a great book! I'm excited that they're making the movie. The amount of 80s trivia referenced here was unbelievable and brought back memories of things that I hadn't thought about in years....loved it!

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Historia
They say Black Dow's killed more men than winter and clawed his way to the throne of the North up a hill of skulls. The King of the Union, ever a jealous neighbor, is not about to stand smiling by while he claws his way any higher. The orders have been given, and the armies are toiling through the northern mud. Thousands of men are converging on a forgotten ring of stones, on a worthless hill, in an unimportant valley, and they've brought a lot of sharpened metal with them.
