Historia
Thirteen-year-old Emily Poe has been given the opportunity of a lifetime: A chance to attend the exclusive Audyn School in Manhattan. But to win the scholarship, she has to pass a test like nothing she’s ever experienced before: A nearly bare room, a set of strange clues, a locked door. And a mysterious organization - the Leopold Foundation - that’s watching her every move.

This must not have been as terrible as it often felt while listening, since I hung in through to the end. Once I was done, I pretty much regretted that I had spent the eight or so hours on this rather than on one of my other Purchased books

Historia
Winner of such prestigious honors as the Booker Prize and Whitbread Award, Ian McEwan is justifiably regarded as a modern master. Set in 1972, Sweet Tooth follows Cambridge student Serena Frome, whose intelligence and beauty land her a job with England's intelligence agency, MI5. In an attempt to monitor writers' politics, MI5 tasks Serena with infiltrating the literary circle of author Tom Healy. But soon matters of trust and identity subvert the operation.

I like Ian macewan but . . .
Revisado: 01-02-13
I did not find his main character, Serena Frome, very believable or sympathetic. It is not clear why the main male character is so smitten with her, nor she with him. By the end u learn that the whole story has been a rather elaborate conceit, which makes for a clever twist on the part of the author--but doesn't make me care any more about the characters.
The setting in MI-5 sounds more intriguing than it turns out to be. I would consider that perhaps MacEwan is resting on his laurels, altho I read that this and ATONEMENT are his personal favorites among his novels thus far. I also read that it is being made into a movie--this may be one of those stories that can come to life on the screen in a way that it did not in print.
This audio version also suffered from an uninspired performance by the narrator.
The NPR reviewer, Maureen Corrigan, did a short review on the program Fresh Air that aptly articulated for me my problems with this novel and I recommend it to anyone considering this book.

Historia
An “invisible” is CIA-speak for the ultimate intelligence nightmare: The terrorist who, because he or she is an ethnic native of the target country, can cross its borders unchecked, move around that country unquestioned, and infiltrate its institutions with ease. An invisible on mainland Britain was the worst possible news. For Liz Carlyle, an MI5 Intelligence Officer, this report from MI6 marks the start of an operation that will test her to the limit and put her own life in jeopardy.

Rimington is the BEST!
Revisado: 09-24-12
Only three of the six (soon to be seven) Rimington thrillers are on audible. I can't wait til they are all recorded. Rimington, former director general of MI-5--Britain's CIA--writes realistic and modern spy thrillers that are the best I've ever read.

Historia
As director of legendary Pommery Champagnes, Philippe Pozzo di Borgo was not generally someone in the habit of asking for help. Then, in 1993, an accident left him a quadriplegic. Passing his days hidden in his Paris townhouse, Philippe found himself the modern equivalent of an “untouchable.” The only person who seemed not to be bothered by Philippe’s condition was someone who had been marginalized his entire life - Abdel, the unemployed, uninhibited immigrant from the outskirts of society who would become Philippe’s caretaker.

Enlightening complement to the remarkable movie
Revisado: 08-20-12
After seeing and enjoying the movie three times it was hard to imagine that the book could come close to how I felt about that wonderful movie The INTOUCHABLES. But having phillippe pozzo di borgo's first person narrative fill in the incredible details of his life before and after the movie, I was just as enthralled and plan to listen to it all over again. His caretaker Abdel Sellou has also written a book, YOU CHANGED MY LIFE which is on kindle but not on audible . . . Yet. Hope it will be soon as it is also a remarkable piece of writing that I would love to hear narrated.

Historia
In the rural hamlet of Lark Rise and the market town of Candleford, life is marked by the pattern of the seasons and the customs of the countryside. Seen through the eyes of a young girl, Laura - based on Flora Thompson herself - 'Lark Rise to Candleford' portrays May Day celebrations and forgotten children's games, friends and relations, rivalries and lasting friendships. Full of gaiety and freshness of observation, this semi-autobiographical account is an endearing portrayal of a vanished way of life.

Everything about this was wonderful
Revisado: 11-22-11
The young woman who plays Laura in the BBC version of this book, Olivia Hallinan, is the narrator for this production and she was absolutely perfect. The book itself is superior to the TV series, more evocative of the real lives of the family in this 1880s poverty stricken hamlet and not needing to create heroes as the film does. People and depiction of poverty are far more realistic and engaging.
