The wonderful narration
Revisado: 02-21-24
To this modern reader, Joseph Conrad seems vague and wordy, suffused with the values and style of another time. A period piece in the same way that Apocalypse Now seems distant. I am so glad I happened upon it. Experiencing it through Kenneth Branough’s masterful narration was thrilling.

This great time capsule of a book captures the abundant popular history of the United States from 1932 to 1972. It encompasses politics, military history, economics, the lively arts, science, fashion, fads, social change, sexual mores, communications, graffiti...everything and anything indigenous that can be captured in print.

This book was a great experience because it put into context event that I either lived through or heard my parents and grandparents discuss. I would love to hear what Willian Manchester would have to say about the half century since this book ended!

This was way over my head in all the details , but I was able to follow the trajectory of the. Story, which was interesting and certainly very important, the book is a few years old and so lacks the breathtaking recent discoveries in this field .

“If I were God, what would you want for Christmas?” With a thousand-yard stare, a haggard and bloodied marine looked incredulously at the war correspondent who asked him this question. In an answer that took “almost forever,” the marine responded, “Give me tomorrow." After nearly four months of continuous and bloody combat in Korea, such a wish seemed impossible.

Audie Murphy was a desperately poor eighteen-year-old orphan when he joined the Army, nineteen when he first saw a buddy die from an enemy bullet and an enemy die from one of his own. By VE day, he had killed at least 240 Germans, had single-handedly destroyed a German tank in one battle and held off six tanks in another, and had become the most decorated soldier in American history, winning every medal his country offered, including the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Historia
In the years leading up to the election of Donald Trump, Congressman Adam Schiff had already been sounding the alarm over the resurgence of autocracy around the world, and the threat this posed to the United States. But as he led the probe into Donald Trump’s abuses of presidential power, Schiff came to the terrible conclusion that the principal threat to American democracy now came from within. In Midnight in Washington, Schiff argues that the Trump presidency has so weakened our institutions and compromised the Republican Party that the peril will last for years.

One more warning
Revisado: 12-21-21
This is a personal, deeply emotional take on the state of human self-determination in this transitional period between the “modern world” and whatever scary unknown comes next. As the complexities grow around us, a deep desire for simple problems with simple answers leads us to a self- assured simpleton who will lake us triumphantly down a nice cozy blind alley. MIDNIGHT IN WASHINGTON is Adam Schiff’s cry from the heart that this must not happen. We need to find our way, but this isn’t it.
If you want facts from someone on the firing line, this is it. Democrat or Republican , listen up. Nothing less than your self determination, democracy, is at stake.

Historia
As President Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves. The result is one of the few White House memoirs to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the president, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a president for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation.

John Bolton speaks up a little late…
Revisado: 12-17-21
John Bolton is a conservative and a hawk; I am neither, but for reasons known only to God, I thought this memoir would be a useful corrective to my urge toward confirmation bias. It was not.
IN my opinion, the book was reasonably well written, and it certainly bristles with facts, times and dates . However, it reveals Trump as an intellectual non-starter with a proud determination to remain uninformed, and to run the country like a family owned corner grocery.
John Bolton reveals himself as a rabid hawk willing, even eager, to reduce civilization to rubble, so long as it’s conservative rubble.
This book would be most valuable were it read by the very people who will never read it.

Revisado: 12-20-20
The Civil War isn’t really over because we haven’t fully settled our issues. So it is worth remembering the absolute devotion of a generation who held things together so we could continue groping our way to a more perfect union. This book was an emotional experience for me, a Southerner, heir to all this agony.

Historia
Although T. E. Lawrence, commonly known as "Lawrence of Arabia’, died in 1935, the story of his life has captured the imagination of succeeding generations. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a monumental work in which he chronicles his role in leading the Arab Revolt against the Turks during the First World War. A reluctant leader, and wracked by guilt at the duplicity of the British, Lawrence nevertheless threw himself into his role, suffering the blistering desert conditions and masterminding military campaigns which culminated in the triumphant march of the Arabs into Damascus.

What a feast for the mind and imagination it has beenI. . If someone in power had read it 20 years ago, we might have saved ourselves quite a bit of sorrow in Iraqis.
