Historia
August 2019 saw numerous commemorations of the year 1619, when what was said to be the first arrival of enslaved Africans occurred in North America. Yet in the 1520s, the Spanish, from their imperial perch in Santo Domingo, had already brought enslaved Africans to what was to become South Carolina. The enslaved people here quickly defected to local Indigenous populations, and compelled their captors to flee. Deploying such illuminating research, The Dawning of the Apocalypse is a riveting revision of the "creation myth" of settler colonialism and how the US was formed.

Horrible narration

I found my mind drifting after listening to the first two minutes. They could have saved money by using a text-to-speech generator. I was really looking forward to listening to this book but this performance deemed it a waste of money.

Historia
Bobby Brown has been one of the most compelling American artists of the past 30 years, a magnetic and talented figure who successfully crossed over many musical genres, including R&B and hip-hop as well as the mainstream. In the late 1980s, the former front man of New Edition had a wildly successful solo career - especially with the launch of Don't Be Cruel - garnering multiple hits on the Billboard top 10 list as well as several Grammy, American Music, and Soul Train awards.

Best Mike Tyson impression ever!
Revisado: 06-26-19
True friends are the best impressionist. Bobby's impression of Mike Tyson proved to me that he truly loved a horrendously misunderstood person like Mike Tyson. This convinced me that Bobby himself has been misunderstood for his entire public career. This book exposed me to a dimension of B Brown I wasn't aware of. I don't know how true the details are in this book but I relate to and really appreciate Bobby for the person he is outside of his talent. Bobby's narration gets better as the book progresses. It gets really intriguing when you hear him re-living events when he reads them. HIGHLY recommend reading, especially for New Jack Swing era kids like me.

Historia
America, says Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Chris Hedges, is convulsed by an array of pathologies that have arisen out of profound hopelessness, a bitter despair and a civil society that has ceased to function. The opioid crisis, the retreat into gambling to cope with economic distress, the pornification of culture, the rise of magical thinking, the celebration of sadism, hate, and plagues of suicides are the physical manifestations of a society that is being ravaged by corporate pillage and a failed democracy. All these ills presage a frightening reconfiguration of the nation and the planet.

Doom and gloom is often what truth sounds like
Revisado: 12-14-18
Chris Hedges writes the gloomiest narratives I've ever read but it's often said that truth hurts. In a world of falsehoods being told and sold 24 hours a day by media it's refreshing to hear someone explain the actual state of the culture of this country.
