Why have so many Americans turned against democracy? In this deeply reported book, Katherine Stewart takes us to conferences of conspiracy-mongers, backroom strategy gatherings, and services at extremist churches, and profiles the people who want to tear it all down.

Historia
Growing up in the shadow of Nancy's fame, John Dickerson rarely saw his mother. This frank memoir - part remembrance, part discovery - describes a freewheeling childhood in which Nancy Dickerson was rarely around unless John was in trouble or she was throwing a party for the president and John was instructed to check the coats. By the time John was old enough to know what the news was, his mother was no longer in the national spotlight and he didn't see why she should be. He thought she was a liar and a phony. When he was 14, his parents divorced, and he moved in with his father.

Unique insight into a vital life wel lived
Revisado: 01-23-25
On election night 1960 I was in the Driskill Hotel, Austin, with LBJ when about 4 AM his election as Vice President was called. Very few had remained that very long night. I asked the Vice President Elect for his autograph on a small spiral notebook I carried in my shirt pocket. He used the broad point pen he always had for such signings, shook my hand, and said “Come on boys, let’s go have breakfast at the PK Grill across the street.” I turned to the one journalist there I instantly recognized as she was the only female newscaster on a national network and asked for her autograph on another page of that notebook. She wrote: “Nancy Hanschman, CBS News, Election Night, 1960.” With that memory I listened to this excellent and revealing story told by her son born years after that night now so long ago. The world is very different now. John’s candid memories flash jarringly across the decades. We have much to learn here.

Historia
In the early 20th century, business elites, trade associations, wealthy powerbrokers, and media allies set out to build a new American orthodoxy: down with 'big government' and up with unfettered markets. With startling archival evidence, Oreskes and Conway document campaigns to rewrite textbooks, combat unions, and defend child labor.

The Most Important Book You Must Read NOW
Revisado: 02-18-24
This is by far the one most important book of our times. Only one other book I have read in my life has ever struck me as profoundly vital to understanding and survival in the complexity of the modern world: “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” by William Shirer. Why? Both expose the dangerous illusions created and manipulated by powers of greed and personality that work to distort and destroy human potential and happiness for all life on our small, insignificant piece of cosmic rock hurtling through a vast cosmos we are only beginning to understand. We are at that point in evolution that the choices we make now will determine whether or not there is a future on our path or only oblivion. This detailed analysis of the selfish follies potentially leading to that disastrous end offers the beginning for changing direction. Let’s hope we can make that change before it is too late.

First edition, printing, autographed
Revisado: 01-07-24
I bought this book when it came out. Mine is the first edition and first printing. It was autographed by William Shirer on 26 Oct 1961 following his speech at the University of Texas in Austin. My extensive notes from that speech reveal Shirer’s perceptive observations on the intervening years. This book served me well in understanding at an early age how such horrible events begin and progress effectively immunizing me from the many social and political paths of more or less similar nature rising and falling in 70 or so years following. Would that everyone in today’s world would have such effective knowledge and immunization.
