For Oxford student Kivrin, traveling back to the 14th century is more than the culmination of her studies - it's the chance for a wonderful adventure. For Dunworthy, her mentor, it is cause for intense worry about the thousands of things that could go wrong.

Slow pace, and implausible in many respects, but captivating
Revisado: 01-06-25
Probably could have been pared down without detracting from the story, and it took a while before I got invested enough to want to listen through to the end, but I’d say it’s worth your time to imagine what it would have been like to live through that time.

The windows between the many worlds have been sealed, and the momentous adventures of Lyra Silvertongue’s youth are long behind her - or so she thought. Lyra is now a 20-year-old undergraduate at St. Sophia’s College, and intrigue is swirling around her once more. Her daemon, Pantalaimon, is witness to a brutal murder, and the dying man entrusts them with secrets that carry echoes from their past. The more Lyra is drawn into these mysteries, the less she is sure of.

I’ve listened to this audiobook four times now and each listen reveals new connections. Pullman’s rich descriptions and attention to detail are spellbinding. I’m eagerly awaiting the sequel, which should be out by the end of 2024. 🤞

Compelling story; top notch voice actors
Revisado: 08-24-24
I’ve listened to the trilogy at least a half dozen times, and every time I find new connections and foreshadowings. I can’t understand why anyone would rate the story or performances anything less than 5.
The first time I read it I thought the cause of the cessation of Dust outflow was a bit trite, but it does capture what that experience feels like (IIRC—it’s been a very long time ;-)). No other quibbles; 👍👍!

Nice survey for laymen
Revisado: 01-14-22
Great intro for those unfamiliar with the giants of modern mathematics and at least a hand-wave toward their works.
I’d hoped for more depth along with the personalities, but I suppose there are limits to what will appeal to a mass audience.

After four years of occasional listenings, I have once or twice made it all the way through w/o falling asleep. It’s an old text, and so probably not accurate or complete re its subject, but it serves the purpose for which I downloaded it perfectly. Highly recommend as a sleep aid.

Right before the wise old wizard Drum Billet died, he passed on his magical staff of power to the newborn eighth son of an eighth son. Unfortunately, Drum Billet never bothered to check the gender of the newborn baby, and it turns out to be a girl. Now his chauvinistic colleagues are forced to deal with a young girl who has all the qualifications to join their all-male profession. Terry Pratchett's third Discworld novel, Equal Rites, asks many provocative questions about magic, where it goes, where it comes from, and why.
