Captivating
Revisado: 07-11-25
I love the magical world that is created in this story! I found each character intriguing and captivating, and I hated to step away from the book to join real life again. This is a well told story that carries you along with its magic. I can highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates magical stories and magical world. The villain is truly evil and frightening, and you really are rooting for his downfall. The heroes are interesting and imperfect personalities, which makes them very relatable – even if you have no magic of your own.

Compelling
Revisado: 07-06-25
I couldn’t put this book down! Each time I had to step away I couldn’t wait to get back. The story is moving and compelling, sometimes infuriating and heartbreaking, and sometimes joyous. The history itself is also compelling. It’s a fascinating time with fascinating people Making fascinating medical advances, and truly making a difference in the world. It’s worth Delling more into that history to find out how truly remarkable it is. This particular story may be fictional, but it truly grabs you and has something to teach. I highly recommend!

I didn’t want it to be dull…
Revisado: 07-02-25
In short, the story is dull and sad. The tone is persistently depressing from the viewpoint character’s perspective. When I realized I was skipping most of the chapters to make progress in the story, I also realized that told me a lot about how far it missed the mark.

Historia
Here is a fascinating biography of those who were, in the mid-19th century, at the center of American thought and literature. It was an eclectic cast of characters. At various times in Concord, Massachusetts, three houses were home to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry and John Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott, and Nathanial Hawthorne. Among their friends and neighbors were Henry James, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Edgar Allen Poe, and others - men and women are at the heart of American idealism.

I learned so much!
Revisado: 06-29-25
This book is filled with details about both well-known writers, not so well-known writes, and their entangled lives. The portraits are honest and without embellishment. The author breathes life into familiar details of their histories. For instance, I’d known Margaret Fuller perished in a shipwreck, but in he telling here, the story of her last hours and how the disaster happened put you in her perspective. You know her fear and heartbreak, and then the heartbreak of those who would miss her. The interpersonal dynamics of the writers and artists who came together in Concord then give dimension to them and the works we know so well. I cannot wait for the day when I can go visit Concord and see where they lived, loved, and created.

Suspenseful and heartbreaking
Revisado: 06-27-25
I can’t say I loved all of this book. Some was maddening but it kept you wanting to know what happens next. It is an often heartbreaking story, through to the end. I found the portrait of Salem interesting, as a city over a century past the witch trials, but still bearing the scars. It’s a very compelling read.

Historia
It has been an eventful morning for Agnes Sharp and the other inhabitants of Sunset Hall, a house share for the old and unruly in the sleepy English countryside. Although they have had some issues (misplaced reading glasses, conflicting culinary tastes, decreasing mobility, and unruly grandsons), nothing prepares them for an unexpected visit from a police officer with some shocking news. A body has been discovered next door. Everyone puts on a long face for show, but they are secretly relieved the body in question is not the one they’re currently hiding in the shed (sorry, Lillith).

Like Thursday Murder Club - with a tortoise
Revisado: 06-23-25
If you like Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, then you might like this one. That is, unless the similarities are too off-putting. The ensemble of characters is vey similar, with similar backgrounds. And they are solving murders, even though they actually committed one. BUT they have a tortoise. And having a dog named Brexit is pretty hilarious. The book has humor and good turns to the plot. So, if you are either unaware of the previously-published book or can ignore the obvious similarities, you’ll find this to be a book that keeps you coming back. It looks like we’ll see more of the Sunset Hall Murder Club.

Needs some trigger warnings
Revisado: 06-18-25
First, the story: Most importantly, a trigger warning. The story relies heavily on a history of sexual abuse and human trafficking. If that’s a trigger, then don’t open this book. Second: I wish the blurb I read said this is Christian fiction. If that is not your cup of tea, then this is not the book for you. It starts small, but becomes quite preachy. I ended up skipping through those sections to get back to the story. The story itself is good, just a little slow for most of it. It pauses to explore trauma and struggles with faith, then gets back to the action, so to speak. It’s a good storyline, all in all.
Now, about the narrator of the audiobook: in a nutshell, she is annoying. I had to slow the playback speed because her pace was causing me anxiety. What really got under my skin was her mispronunciation of book and author names. Specifically, Jane Eyre and JRR Tolkien. “Eyre” is not pronounced like “Ire” (as the narrator says), but like “Air.” Also, Tolkien is not pronounced like “Tolkin” like she says, but is instead said as “Tolkeen.” It’s said so often that it really gets on your nerves.
She also makes bizarre pauses, very frequently. For instance, “His father has never been able to talk him out of <pause> something he’d set his mind to.” Or “….sirens whooping <pause> towards them.” It’s enough to jar you from the story.
Overall, the main plot line is enjoyable. Just keep these notes in kind in case it’s not your thing.

History you don’t often hear of
Revisado: 06-16-25
I’m always pleasantly surprised when a book of historical fiction is able to teach a part of history that we normally don’t hear about. As such, the story told in this book is an important account of brave and courageous women who made a difference in France in World War I, then later back in their home countries. That said, just be aware that until the last chapters, this is not a happy story. It’s often dark and depressing, which accurately portrays much of what they faced. It does make me want to go spend more time in the stacks of a library and to do research like the later timeline in this book portrays. Hopefully, this book will inspire you to look up more about the actual people who make up these incredible stories.

Historia
Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At eighty-two, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home. Now he has warm meals in his belly and a roof over his head—as long as his poker face is in better shape than his prostate and that his look-alike never turns up.

Couldn’t put it down
Revisado: 06-13-25
This is one of those gems with a unique story and vivid variety of characters. Honestly, you can feel the love it gives off! Okay, so it’s a bit sappy at times, but it’s a sappiness I wish I knew in my life too. I always dreamed of being loved like Fred loves Dawn. The only thing I missed was not knowing what became of Denise. This story will have you laughing and crying!

Waiting for the next book
Revisado: 06-10-25
Like the previous books in the series, this one also ended with several storylines unresolved, plus one newly introduced. If these books have taught us anything, though, it’s that everything will work out fine. Tara why I am not referring to the ending as a “cliffhanger” because there is no tension nor worry. We will wait and see! All in all, it’s a pleasant, low-key read for when you need to escape from a chaotic world.
