The only GOOD Star Wars books these days seem to be the re-released Legends books from 3 decades ago. I am happy that the X-Wing series is among them. The abridged audiobooks from the days of caseate tapes never did these stories justice. Thompson is great as always, Hopefully the rest of the Stackpole/Allston books will get unabridged releases and they can get around to doing the New Jedi Order books.

The war is in full swing. Following the unprecedented outcome of the siege at Fort Yimin, both the Republic and the Empire are forced to drastically reevaluate their plans for the conflict. With matters on the western front more or less settled for the moment, the warring nations turn their attention toward the eastern theatre. Winter looms on the horizon, threatening to deadlock the region and put a temporary halt to hostilities.

This one took a while to come out, But am glad it did, Soundbooth was even called out on the delay in a tongue and cheek end credits bit. Hopefully the next book won't take so long. Of course the voices were great as always and I can understand why Hays and Ellicott are in such demand. If you have enjoyed the others, definitely pick this one up!

Now that Vance has become the God of Death, he has a long list of goals. Number one is getting his lordship back. On the way, he'll get to know his beautiful party members, and raise every dead enemy to form an undead army. A whole lot more violence. A bunch more spice. Oodles of necromancy. Countless crazy antics. If you liked book one, you’re going to love book two.

"The Golden Brat", Reinhard von Lohengramm, a military prodigy and admiral of the Galactic Empire, has ambitions beyond protecting the borders or even defeating the empire's enemies. He seeks to overthrow the old order and become a truly absolute - yet benevolent - dictator. His rival, the humble Yang Wen-li of the Free Planets Alliance, wishes to preserve democracy even if he must sacrifice his political ideals to defeat the empire.

I have known about the series for many years, having watched bootleg anime back in the '90s. But for the first time the book series has been translated into English. Sadly, I am at a point in my life where I don't have tons of time to sit and read, but thankfully there is Audible, which I can burn through while driving or doing other work. My concern is that presently, only the first 3 of the 10 books have been converted to audio. The last one was apparently almost 4 years ago. I certainly hope that Amazon/Audible and Simon and Shuster get their act together to get the other books out soon.
As for the story, for fans of the Anime you will know it is somewhat dry, but very compelling. Politically astute and relevant to today's world, there is a great focus on 2 dimensional space warfare tactics and the distinctions between the two opposing commanders. It is NOT an action space romp, or a fast-paced adventure. It is a slow-burn with an intellectual bent which requires nearly the entire first hour of the recording to be devoted to backstory just to give better context to what will happen later. In some ways, the sprawling epic is akin to a space version of Lord of the Rings, or more precisely The Silmarillion, as it reads more like a history that is being witnessed to unfold at times than a traditional sci-fi novel . It has me hooked, even knowing where it will end up going. I look forward to spending my next credits on the subsequent books.

I love the series, and the Reader is really good to listen to. I have been anxiously awaiting the next in the series, but it has yet to arrive even though I can find audio versions of the next two on a competing site with unfortunately a different reader. But the story is enticing enough that I might not be able to wait!

Good story, good reader, bad editor.
Revisado: 07-18-15
What did you like best about Murder in Halruaa? What did you like least?
the story was enticing from the start, as the mystery of what is going on is revealed to the main character at the same time as the reader.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Murder in Halruaa?
three were many relatively useful names of characters, which created several puns including chapter titles
Any additional comments?
My major complaint comes down to the editing. there are two or three mistakes that the reader makes, repeating a sentence or flubbing a line. the sound editor did not catch these. I have never heard an audible book that shoddily checked.

A wonderful introduction the world of Athas. All five of Denning's books, read by the talented Ray Porter do a good job of wetting your appetite for the world. Sadly, the other eight books in the older Dark Sun series have yet to be released on Audible. I recommend that fans of the series, old and new, get these audio editions. Hopefully it will encourage WotC and Audible to release the remaining books, and have readers as talented as Mr. Porter.
