Historia
As a child, Anna Wintour was a tomboy with no apparent interest in clothing but, seduced by the miniskirts and bob haircuts of swinging 1960s London, she grew into a fashion-obsessed teenager. Her father, an influential newspaper editor, loomed large in her life, and once he decided she should become editor-in-chief of Vogue, she never looked back.

So interesting
Revisado: 09-20-24
Loved this book. As opposed to The Devil Wears Prada which serves ‘Anna the stereotype’, this book gives you a view of Anna the woman. Incredibly smart and driven. Devoted to family. Few close friends but those in her inner circle (like Tally) she will support even if they betray her. She has made both good and bad decisions and has owned them both. A true icon but not speak about her self. Enjoys her role as philanthropist and advisor to the fashion world. Long live Dame Winter!

Branagh Gives Mesmerizing Performance
Revisado: 07-01-23
Kenneth Branagh never disappoints and he did not do so here. His performance is masterclass. Conrad’s story of the African Ivory trade is very good by itself but Branagh’s performance makes it next level. Definitely recommend!

The epitome of grace, independence, and wit, Lauren Bacall continues to astound generations with her audacious spirit and on-screen excellence. Together with Humphrey Bogart, she produced some of the most electric scenes in movie history, and their romance on and off screen made them Hollywood's most celebrated couple.

First half interesting…..
Revisado: 06-23-23
I liked the first half of the book detailing Lauren’s rise to fame, marriages and children. The second half was like a 4 hour obituary reading. Odder still was that the tributes started sounding the same which seemed insincere.

Hitchcock did it better. Not a great story but not bad - just predictable. Two and a half stars for the story.

Beautifully written but long
Revisado: 04-03-23
Definitely more historical fiction than your typical mystery. Beautiful prose but it is a long book because it is told from so many perspectives. IMHO one or two of the perspectives could have been left out and the book would not have suffered.

Historia
Glamour, danger, liberation: in a Mad Men–era of commercial flight, Pan Am World Airways attracted the kind of young woman who wanted out, and wanted up. Required to have a college education, speak two languages, and possess the political savvy of a Foreign Service officer, a jet-age stewardess serving on iconic Pan Am between 1966 and 1975 also had to be between 5′3" and 5′9", between 105 and 140 pounds, and under 26 years of age at the time of hire.

Not what I was expecting…
Revisado: 01-16-23
So I ended up liking this book. It was very interesting but it was not what I thought it was going to be about. It’s topic kind of shifted around. It was about:
1. The evolution of the first stewardesses with their sex, martial status, age, race, height, weight and beauty requirements to today’s flight attendant.
2. The Vietnam war and the role commercial and contract air carriers played. Also the protests about the war.
3. Feminist movement and the fight for equal opportunity for women in the workplace.
4. The stories of 4+ stewardesses
5. The history of PanAm (lite)
The beginning of the book was slow for me but once the author wove all these themes together (say 25% of the way in) then it got very interesting. Overall I really did enjoy.

Historia
What would you call people who steal the newly buried dead and sell their bodies for medical dissection? In Stevenson's day, they were sometimes called "resurrectionists" - but he calls them "Body-Snatchers" and tells a grisly, memorable story about them. A master of terror and suspense, Stevenson lets his imagination explore the depths of human superstitions. Also included on this recording are the stories "Isle of Voices" and "The Waif Woman."

Felt like the body snatchers ended abruptly. The wait wife was great. The third Hawaiian tale was not interesting to me.

In 1900, Isaac Monroe Cline was in charge of the Galveston station of the US Weather Bureau. He was a knowledgeable, seasoned weatherman who considered himself a scientist. When he heard the deep thudding of waves on Galveston's beach in the early morning of September 8, however, Cline refused to be alarmed. The city had been hit by bad weather before.

Feels Like the topic was not big enough….
Revisado: 05-18-22
I like Eric Larson’s other books but literally it felt like he could have told this story in 30-50% of the words. This is a history of all recorded hurricanes/cyclones; a history of weather forecasting and the weather bureau; the personal biography of Isaac Kline & his brother; and finally the hurricane in Galveston. It just felt very long!

Tom Wolfe's best-selling modern classic tells the story of Sherman McCoy, an elite Wall Street bond trader who has it all: wealth, power, prestige, a Park Avenue apartment, a beautiful wife, and an even more beautiful mistress - until one wrong turn sends Sherman spiraling downward into a humiliating fall from grace. A car accident in the Bronx involving Sherman, his girlfriend, and two young lower-class Black men sets a match to the incendiary racial and social tensions of 1980s New York City.

Amazing Book
Revisado: 03-30-21
I saw the movie with Melanie Griffith and Tom Hanks when it first came out and honestly remembered nothing about the storyline. The movie was forgettable but this book is not! Not only was the narration superb... but the story and writing were incredible. I am going to look at Tom Wolfe’s other books now. I would give this book ten stars - it is a true classic!
