Historia
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Glacially, frustratingly slow with little reward
Revisado: 08-19-20
Circe, Greek mythology's powerful sorceress, was reduced to a whiny and irresolute character who took so painfully long to buck up. It seeks to humanize a goddess, and set her complexity apart from the petty Olympians, the cruel Titans, and the vapid nymphs, but this Circe's thumb-twiddling and grating self-absorption over one chapter too many made it difficult to understand or sympathize with her. Admittedly, there were a number of passages that were beautifully written but when measured, the book's gestalt proves wanting.
Only Perdita Weeks's dulcet narration coaxed me into finishing this audiobook. I promptly returned it as soon as it was over and although I got my money back, I'm still annoyed. There went 12 hours and 8 minutes of my mortal life I can't reclaim.

Historia
In 1940, David Sparsholt arrives at Oxford to study engineering, though his sights are set on joining the Royal Air Force. Handsome, athletic, charismatic, he is unaware of his effect on others - especially on Evert Dax, the lonely son of a celebrated novelist who is destined to become a writer himself. With the world at war, and the Blitz raging in London, Oxford nevertheless exists at a strange remove: a place of fleeting beauty - and secret liaisons. A friendship develops between these two young men that will have unexpected consequences as the novel unfolds.

Delightful meandering
Revisado: 07-25-20
David Dawson gives life to the words that Alan Hollinghurst strung together so beautifully. I would probably never read this book but I’m already listening to it again.

Fiver could sense danger. Something terrible was going to happen to the warren; he felt sure of it. They had to leave immediately. So begins a long and perilous journey of survival for a small band of rabbits. As the rabbits skirt danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band, its humorous characters, and its compelling culture, complete with its own folk history and mythos. Fiver’s vision finally leads them to Watership Down, an upland meadow. But here they face their most difficult challenges of all.

Excellent book, most excellent narrator!
Revisado: 05-18-19
Listening to an audiobook that is 17.5 hours long could be tedious but there's nothing tedious at all when you're listening to a book as excellent as "Watership Down" being read by the most excellent Peter Capaldi.
Mr. Capaldi's voice acting is a treat to listen to, and lends the perfect tone and emotion to this gem of a book. If you couldn't get enough of the irrepressible Kehaar, who Mr. Capaldi brought to life in the Netflix animated series, this audiobook will definitely satisfy and entertain you, as he gives voice to the narrator and all of the characters!
Let's hope Mr. Capaldi reads us more audiobooks to love and enjoy.

Historia
A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets 16-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Narration Leaves Much to be Desired
Revisado: 11-25-18
I bought the whole UK series, that is, right up before The Map of Days, which I bought only to return because I realized that the narrator is still the same. I only endured his style and accents because I like the series but decided not to suffer through it again with another audiobook read by him.

The Blythes are a big, warm, rambunctious family who live on a small farm and sometimes foster children. Now Prez has come to live with them. But, though he seems cheerful and helpful, he never says a word. Then one day Prez answers the door to someone claiming to be his relative. This small, loud stranger carries a backpack, walks with a swagger and goes by the name of Sputnik. As Prez dithers on the doorstep, Sputnik strolls right past him and introduces himself to everyone in the household.

A Fantastic Adventure Narrated with Panache!
Revisado: 09-24-18
I found myself laughing out loud at times, and actually shedding tears at other times because of this heartwarming story that was read with such amazing panache by the wonderful Peter Capaldi. He's made it even more entertaining, and his Scottish accent adds authenticity and flavor to the narration. It's a pleasure listening to him use different voices and bring life to the book's sympathetic characters.
The story is heartwarming but never sappy, cheeky but never rude. Your heart will go out to Prez, and sometimes, you can even imagine the irrepressible Sputnik as a Doctor Who-like character who wreaks mayhem wherever he goes but still manages to save the day.
The book was written for kids and tweens but it strikes a chord even with adults.
