An amazing book I almost did not finish
Revisado: 07-28-24
This book provides spiritual insights that, rather than watered-down theology so prevalent today, bring the reader into the spiritual roots of Christianity through the Jesus prayer.
The use of AI to narrate the work was a big mistake. I almost didn't finish the book because the narrator program was so awful. The writers and publishers should have invested in a human narrator rather than a second-rate AI program. I fear many people will be turned off by the AI narrator and walk away from the book missing out on all it has to offer.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Heartbreaking
Revisado: 07-24-24
Well written book giving voice to the experiences of an often disregarded segment of white folks in America from the perspective of someone who is been there.
However, Mr. Vance's admiration for the "hillbilly code of honor" is disturbing. Rather than a code of honor, The code seems more like an excuse for belligerence and violence. This view is also not unique to hillbilly culture, but harkens back to antebellum days in the South.
The story perpetuates the myth that all one needs to do is pull himself up by the bootstraps to rise up in American society when it is not the case. Perhaps because of the pain of his past, he cannot see that the takeaways from his youth will perpetuate the poverty of that subculture in America.
Heartbreaking.

Historia
For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

We have been cheated
Revisado: 10-20-20
I love my country and consider myself to be patriotic. this book did nothing to reduce my pride in the US as a flawed, but an important experiment in democracy that still has a potential to bring about equity for all people. Sharing the history as Howard Zinn does enriches the readers' understanding of where we've been, where we are, and the choices we face moving forward.

Historia
In the first half of life, we are naturally preoccupied with establishing ourselves; climbing, achieving, and performing. But as we grow older and encounter challenges and mistakes, we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving way. This message of falling down - that is in fact moving upward - is the most resisted and counterintuitive of messages in the world's religions. Falling Upward offers a new paradigm for understanding one of the most profound of life's mysteries: how those who have fallen down are the only ones who understand "up".

Shallow
Revisado: 03-14-19
I have tried my best, but I can no longer stomach the shallow and narcissistic musings of Richard Rohr. It's not just how loosely Rohr interprets Biblical texts, the writings of mystics or scholars, it's his cavalier attitude towards All things spiritual.
Not all myths are the same, and not all myths are life-giving. Some myths are in fact antithetical to those values enshrined within the Abraham traditions.
Try Mother Teresa, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton, Martin Buber, or any other number of authors, but do not waste your time listening to the self absorbed words of Rohr.

Historia
Peruvian priest Gustavo Gutiérrez's 1971 book, A Theology of Liberation, provides an inspiring and groundbreaking argument as to how Christians and the Roman Catholic Church should act in support of the poor. The Catholic Church had traditionally seen itself as politically neutral. In the 1960s and 1970s, however, reformers such as Gutiérrez urged it to seriously address real-world issues such as poverty and oppression.

Analysis?
Revisado: 02-20-19
Not much of an analysis, more of a superficial overview. For example, lacks even the most basic analysis of Marxist theory. Disappointing.

Historia
Marcellino D'Ambrosio dusts off what might have been just dry theology to bring you the exciting stories of great heroes such as Ambrose, Augustine, Basil, Athanasius, John Chrysostom, and Jerome. These brilliant, embattled, and sometimes eccentric men defined the biblical canon, hammered out the Creed, and gave us our understanding of sacraments and salvation. It is they who preserved the rich legacy of the early Church for us.

What disappointed you about When the Church Was Young?
In his attempt to maintain the Orthodox Roman Catholic line, the author denies his readers/listeners the opportunity to wrestle with the complexities of competing theologies within the 300+ years of the Christian church. He presents the history of early Christianity from the perspective of the "winner," rather than providing an honest depiction of Catholic theology being as beautifully flawed as the men who, through political prowess, polemic agility and at times violence, triumphed in bringing about the theology of the Holy Roman Empire..
What was most disappointing about Marcellino D'Ambrosio’s story?
As a Catholic I am troubled by how the author glosses over the cracks and contradictions in Catholic thought that make it the beautiful imperfect institution that it is today, and has been from the start.
Any additional comments?
For Catholics and others looking for a first glance into the names and perspectives of the men who shaped early Christianity, it might be a good place to start.......but not the place to end.
