Historia
In this classic theological treatise, the acclaimed theologian and religious leader Howard Thurman (1900-1981) demonstrates how the gospel may be read as a manual of resistance for the poor and disenfranchised. Jesus is a partner in the pain of the oppressed and the example of His life offers a solution to ending the descent into moral nihilism. Hatred does not empower—it decays. Only through self-love and love of one another can God's justice prevail.

This book shared example and racial issues we all need to know, and work to reverse. Relatable, challenging, and hopeful.

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Life changing
Revisado: 05-20-24
My mom was a child in Hamburg, Germany during the war. This credit my written book has introduced me to more nuance of her life, and I so wish I could go back in time and ask her new questions. The writing in this book is exquisite, the narrator is perfect, and the weaving together of the story lines is brilliant.

Everything changes in a single moment for Dawn Edelstein. She’s on a plane when the flight attendant makes an announcement: Prepare for a crash landing. She braces herself as thoughts flash through her mind. The shocking thing is, the thoughts are not of her husband but of a man she last saw 15 years ago: Wyatt Armstrong. Dawn, miraculously, survives the crash, but so do all the doubts that have suddenly been raised.

Great narration. Compelling storylines.
Revisado: 04-01-24
I enjoyed this book, but it sure went over my head a lot. I didn’t feel it needed to have as many details about the dig sites and that the book is so long made them even harder to embrace. But I love Picoult’s insightful one-liners that can both uncover as well as wrap up a mystery of the world.
This isn’t my favorite book of hers, but I stand in so much respect of what she does and the thoroughness with which she does it!

Nice easy read

I enjoyed this read. There were a few wonderful glimpses along the way, but I would have liked those to be expanded some. But a nice read. And certainly had one considering the beauty and strength of life in the Midwest.

Incredible!
Revisado: 02-25-24
The plot, the weaving of stories and time, the character development, the range of emotions, and the power of story come alive in multitudes of ways in this book. I believe this is one of the best books I’ve ever read, and I’m so grateful for the window into this rich - and too often unrecognized and unhonored - part of our American history.
I am in deep gratitude for this book, snd highly recommend it without any reservation at all.
Simply, wow.

William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

The power of human relationships is so real throughout this story. Many of the characters were described in great depth, yet in leading much to the imagination.

Still reeling from the sudden death of her mother, Jess is about to do the hardest thing she's ever done: empty her childhood home so that it can be sold. To the world, the books are outdated and ready to be recycled. To Jess, they represent love and the future that her mother always wanted her to have.

This is a lovely story that lends itself to imagination and wonder. The first half of the book lagged some, but the second half well made up for it. This was my first read for 2024, and I’m so glad it was.

One of the best books I’ve read
Revisado: 08-24-23
I fell in love with Remy right from the beginning, so much so that it was hard to enjoy Ann’s ‘chapters’. But the two stories beautifully come together and I hated this book to end.
Am incredible testimony to the human spirit, endurance, power and hope. I’m so glad to have come across this book.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.
