The thorough look into the Mansion murders and uncovering and presentation of previously known information keep me on the edge of my seat. Tom strives through the whole recounting of his investigation to steer clear of the territory of conspiracy theories, attaching the utmost scrutiny to his own findings and failing to fall into the trappings so many other people who find evidence of foul play become snared in. The litany of suspicious activity, cover ups, inconsistencies, and connections drives one of the most compelling cases that our understanding of the Family and their heinous crimes are only a fraction of a heavily edited story.

I don't feel angry listening to people with no actual connection to actual indigenous shamanism speak on and call themselves Shamans, I just feel sad. Neoshamanism, and that is what this is, not true shamanism, uses the claim of originating from native sources to legitimize their spirituality by attaching "ancient wisdom" to it without ever having to involve actual indigenous cultures and beliefs.
It's a spiritually dead path that is being paraded about by shallow New Age thinkers who want to incorporate the aesthetic of a nature based spirituality into their psudo-religion without having to address the harsh realities those spiritualities and indigenous cultures were faced with.

There is little wisdom on that path, and little of value. And I grieve for those who are led down it by paper Shamans who parade their claim to shamanism whose deepest experience is at most a weekend Ayahuasca reservation.

It always amazes how these ancient traditions always seem to have philosophies that align with shallow New Age Western lines of thinking without any of the tradition, symbolism, unique beliefs, or practices you see in other cultural traditions.

If you had removed the term "Toltec" from this book, it would be indistinguishable from any other new age psudo-mysticism claiming to be shamanism.

This is not a book outlining a living tradition based on the beliefs of a pre-Columbian Mesoamerican culture, or even a surviving tradition that emerged from this culture and changed over centuries, absorbing the beliefs of the cultures and traditions they were exposed to.

The book itself and the claims in it are harmless, just unoriginal and a little saddening. I just wish enough of the Toltec culture survived that we could contrast it with the real beliefs and traditions of those mysterious people.

Jason Miller sets a rare precedent: creating a book on modern magic that focuses on the application and techniques for fledgling magic users to employ their craft without focusing on any single occult philosophy. The Reader/Listener is given an extensive overview of rituals, tricks, and useful advice on how to utilize any kind of magic in a results focused manner. A welcome breath of fresh air for grimoires and instruction manuals that expect you to become a devoted Kabbalist, Wiccan, or Thelemite.
