Historia
In the book, Gawande is able to build a narrative through the collection of experiences that leads to the conclusion that as we perceive ourselves as closer to death, our thoughts on mortality transform our goals and values to that of simpler things. Through a collection of insights, statistics and stories, Gawande argues on how we should focus less on prolonging life and more on how we can make it more meaningful. Excellent summary in a pinch
Revisado: 01-23-24
I read the actual book cover to cover 1.5 years ago. I am participating in a book group meeting to discuss Being Mortal, so I needed to refresh my memory. Mostly, I wanted to be reminded of the order of the chapters and their themes. This synopsis did the trick and the summaries at the end of each chapter's synopsis are solid. But by all means, read/listen to the actual Being Mortal - it is SO good. And it pains me to say, but the narrator of this synopsis is terrible. His inflection makes absolutely no sense – as if he has no idea what he's even reading!

Historia
In The Other Side of the River, his eagerly awaited new book, Kotlowitz takes us to southern Michigan. Here, separated by the St. Joseph River, are two towns, St. Joseph and Benton Harbor. Geographically close, they are worlds apart, a living metaphor for America's racial divisions: St. Joseph is a prosperous lakeshore community and 95 percent white, while Benton Harbor is impoverished and 92 percent black. When the body of a black teenaged boy from Benton Harbor is found in the river, unhealed wounds and suspicions between the two towns' populations surface as well.

Very worthwhile
Revisado: 08-01-23
My husband and daughters were going on a work trip with our church to Benton Harbor last month. I mentioned this to a friend who is from Southwestern Michigan, and she recommended this book to help me understand more about the community. I'm very glad I listened this book, it really helped me better understand the circumstances of Benton Harbor, less than two hours from Chicago where we live.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Summer 2023
Revisado: 08-01-23
When I think back to summer 2023, "that's the summer I listened to demon copperhead" will come to mind. I'm sure of it. That's how definitive of an experience this book was for me over 10 days or so. Many parts were difficult to listen to. But so worthwhile. When I woke up the day after I finished it, my first thought was "I don't want it to be over." So I listened to the final chapter two more times. The ending was just right.

One morning in late 2017, New York Times columnist Frank Bruni woke up with strangely blurred vision. He wondered at first if some goo or gunk had worked its way into his right eye. But this was no fleeting annoyance, no fixable inconvenience.

Uplifting, comforting, thought-provoking
Revisado: 07-05-23
I'm not sure I would've loved this book in my 30s or even my 40s. But at 50, it' spoke to me. Aging parents, my own aging body, and witnessing the fragility of life up close is challenging. This book demonstrates in a variety of ways the importance of mindset – which we can control – in the face of all that we cannot control. Definitely worthwhile.

From New York Times best-selling author Rachel Held Evans: a must-listen for anyone on the journey of doubt, deconstruction, and ultimately faith reborn. Eighty years after the Scopes Monkey Trial made a spectacle of Christian fundamentalism and brought national attention to her hometown, Rachel Held Evans faced a trial of her own when she began to have doubts about her faith. Rachel recounts growing up in a culture obsessed with apologetics, struggling as her own faith unraveled one unexpected question at a time.

My first RHE book
Revisado: 07-29-22
I learned of RHE after her tragic passing. I loved this book. I was not raised fundamental Christian (catholic upbringing and presbyterian now) and can’t relate directly to the author’s crisis of faith but nonetheless found this book enlightening and it also helped me better understand the Bible.

Historia
Heather McGhee’s specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all.

So worthwhile
Revisado: 07-13-21
I know I got so much more out of this book listening to it rather than reading it. The author did a really great job with inflection and emphasis. One of the most important takeaways for me was understanding the economic policies of our country (since its founding) that led us to where we are today. Particularly in terms of college assistance and home ownership.

Historia
A generation gap has emerged between parents and their girls. Even in this age of helicopter parenting, the mothers and fathers of tomorrow's women have little idea what their daughters are up to sexually or how they feel about it. Drawing on in-depth interviews with over 70 young women and a wide range of psychologists, academics, and experts, renowned journalist Peggy Orenstein goes where most others fear to tread, pulling back the curtain on the hidden truths, hard lessons, and important possibilities of girls' sex lives in the modern world.

Girls & Sex was an incredibly thought provoking book. My daughters are 8'and 10, and I'm so glad that I had a chance to read this now because it will certainly inform the way I parent. So good.
