Historia
1950s Hollywood: Every actress wants to play Salome, the star-making role in a big-budget movie about the legendary woman whose story has inspired artists since ancient times. So when the film’s mercurial director casts Vera Larios, an unknown Mexican ingenue, in the lead role, she quickly becomes the talk of the town. Vera also becomes an object of envy for Nancy Hartley, a bit player whose career has stalled, and who will do anything to win the fame she believes she richly deserves.

Didn't enjoy the pacing
Revisado: 02-10-25
I have enjoyed the author's other books, but not this one. I felt like it dragged out forever. The character development was painfully slow and many sections could have been omitted entirely. Then, the ending felt beyond rushed. The book approached the climax and then, just...jumped past it all. Would not recommend.

Slow "burn?"
Revisado: 09-30-24
while trying to avoid spoilers, at the end of the book, I felt worn out and unfulfilled. It's not that there were loose ends left...more that I didn't agree with or enjoy the endings.

Historia
Three months ago, Tansy Bloom quit monster hunting. Since then, she’s been trying to live a normal life (whatever that means), but ending up single, unemployed, and living on a boat outside her godfather’s pub definitely wasn’t part of the plan. So, when Tansy’s ex-husband – fellow monster hunter Rex Barclay – turns up like a bad penny and asks for her help with his latest investigation, Tansy reluctantly agrees. At first, the job appears to be a straightforward monster hunt – following a spate of large creature sightings, Rex believes a werewolf is on the loose in Norfolk.

good moments and a decent way to pass time, but the writing could be summarized as "whatever you think would stereotypically come next".

Historia
Montserrat has always been overlooked. She’s a talented sound editor, but she’s left out of the boys’ club running the film industry in ’90s Mexico City. And she’s all but invisible to her best friend, Tristán, a charming if faded soap opera star, though she’s been in love with him since childhood. Then Tristán discovers his new neighbor is the cult horror director Abel Urueta, and the legendary auteur claims he can change their lives—even if his tale of a Nazi occultist imbuing magic into highly volatile silver nitrate stock sounds like sheer fantasy.

Better than expected
Revisado: 04-27-24
Not a comic book fan, but this was more nuanced than I expected. Didn't much enjoy the third story, but the rest were good.
Narrator does female voices by whispering so volume changes are drastic during certain dialogs.

Historia
With the failure of Hadley's Hope, Weyland-Yutani has suffered a devastating setback - the loss of the Aliens they aggressively sought to exploit. Yet there's a reason the Company has risen to the top of the food chain. True to form, they have a redundancy already in place: the facility known as "The Cold Forge". Remote station RB-232 has become their greatest asset in weaponizing the Xenomorphs. However, when Dorian Sudler is sent to RB-232 to assess their progress, he discovers that there's a spy aboard - someone who doesn't necessarily act in the company's best interests.

I don't enjoy books where I hate everyone
Revisado: 07-24-23
The title pretty much says it all. I like none of the characters. Everyone is manipulative and seeks only to further themselves at the expense of others. I'd root for the aliens, but the setup and character development are way too long. The more I hear about the characters and their backstories, the more I want to give up.

Wish Fulfillment and Soapboxing
Revisado: 11-28-22
This book is my current benchmark for worst writing. I'm not talking style/grammar. I'm talking story, plot, and premise.
The MC is simultaneously the smartest, strongest, most attractive, etc. person in every setting. If someone hates him, all he has to do is say "let's get a drink" and they naturally agree. That's not how things work.
There's a point where one character says to the MC "you just love the sound of your own voice" after he monologues/soapboxes and it couldn't be more true. Mostly it's on societal woes that I assume the author has (like skimping tips, or unfair wages, or the like). People don't talk like that.
As for pacing, I really, really didn't need 2 hours for him to set up his business. This includes going to the bank to get a loan and the bank rep. being SHOCKED a burly man can put together a business proposal...did I mention soapboxing?

Historia
Rick Yancey’s first gothic suspense tale, The Monstrumologist, earned him a prestigious Michael L. Printz Award. The second installment of this acclaimed series, Curse of the Wendigo, finds young Will Henry on the hunt for a supernatural beast plaguing New England in the late 1800s. Will and his mentor, the domineering Dr. Warthrop, are enlisted to help the doctor’s former fiancée. It seems her husband has been lost in the Canadian wilderness.

Neither adventure nor horror nor...all that good
Revisado: 11-18-21
First off, performance was fine. A little slow for me and weirdly paced with let's of pauses, but no real issue.
Full disclosure: this was my first book in the series, but I won't be reading the rest.
Story was really underwhelming. In the spoiler free realm, I felt like the characters were extremely unbelievable. It's like the author said the characters are developed for a particular personality and behavior pattern, but for plot purposes, X needs to happen instead. The narrator is a child, so I can give some leeway there since they don't have to be logical, but not the rest.
One major theme of the book is hunger. Having just read a book discussing starvation extensively ("The Terror" by Simmons), this felt weak in comparison. Parallels to metaphorical hunger felt heavy handed.
Probably not a spoiler since it's prologue but just in case SPOILER! ... there's little to no subtlety here. For example: yes, we know it's an unreliable narrator. You don't have to keep reminding us.
