Historia
In a fascinating collection of archive interviews with the celebrated writer, presenter and polymath, you can hear—in his own words—the beliefs and aspirations that have shaped him. He talks about his upbringing, a time when Stephen admits he was a rebellious schoolboy and behaved outrageously in order to survive school, and discusses his early love of language and Oscar Wilde. He also recalls discovering classic radio comedy and meeting Emma Thompson and Hugh Laurie at Cambridge.

Could listen to him for hours
Revisado: 10-23-23
The only not delightful element is that I failed to note this was less than an hour. So disappointing. Also that a 45 minute text costs the same credit that an 8-20 hour text does. Still, Stephen Fry.

Historia
In the early hours of June 17, 1972, a security guard named Frank Wills enters six words into the log book of the Watergate office complex that will change the course of history: 1:47 AM Found tape on doors; call police. The subsequent arrests of five men seeking to bug and burgle the Democratic National Committee offices—three of them Cuban exiles, two of them former intelligence operatives—quickly unravels a web of scandal that ultimately ends a presidency and forever alters views of moral authority and leadership.

Everyone should read or hear this book
Revisado: 05-16-22
Impressively researched. Well read. A respectful author’s voice - respectful of the importance of this narrative as well as its complexity, required detail, and still unknown elements. The readers voice respects listeners-remaining calm and clear as, at least this reader, felt again shock, fear, rage, and sadness in response to the story. I defended the criminal president throughout my highschool years (1973-77). Then, to pass the summer before college I read every book written by the other criminals and those tasked with prosecuting them, and Pres. Ford’s insufficient explanation. It took little time to learn the terrible truths and realize the still unpunished depth and breadth of N’s mendacity and contempt for the people, nation, law, democracy, presidency, and really anyone but himself and everything except money & a certain kind of power. I refused to help him recover financially and read for free as much of his lie filled memoir. In graduate school, I wrote an excellent critical analysis of his ridiculous and so revealing of the man resignation speech-not cathartic but such fun! This excellent work allowed me to learn new things, refresh what I had learned across the years, and to begin to wonder how we allowed IMPOTUS to rise with this history so many voters lived. Nostalgia? Amnesia? Both characterized the redemptive comments at RMN death. So many things done by RMN were done gleefully by IMPOTUS. And nearly no GOP stood for the nation-nearly none honored their oath. Lessons of history. Anyway-listen.

We thought we could all use an example of a woman who faced an unexpected disaster of titanic proportions and not only survived, but used her brains, bravery, and wits to help others also survive in the process. Join us as we revisit our 2012 coverage of Margaret "Molly" Brown, and our own Field Trip to visit the Titanic (sort of) on the 108th anniversary of the maritime disaster...but, it's a story of inspiration.

Good show. Good notes. Better to know the facts about this accomplished woman. Need to disagree with their 100% negative review of the film. The film wasn’t fact but it was a delightful musical featuring another accomplished woman who survived challenges; and Harve Presnell as creepy? Unfair reading. Also, the film Titanic does deserve some negative review notes-horrible movie. While I’m a bit sorrow her name was never Molly, I’m happy to know more of her life. I will listen to more of the podcast.

Listened to end. Frustrating Reading; Good story
Revisado: 05-02-20
Fascinating story. Increasingly compelling. Eventually can't wait to learn that the villains (and they are villains) are dealt with (finally) appropriately. Of course, they are not. Good lesson about the mess we make when we romanticize family. The great weakness (and frustration) of the text is the performance. First, there are repeated editing errors. I lost count of the number of times sentences were repeated. If at all possible, it should be reedited to eliminate those. However, the quality of the reading voices is the weakest element. Both readers mispronounce words and have difficulty with pacing and with precise enunciation. The male voice was very hard for me to listen to; I appreciate vernacular speech and idioms, but not words rushed together and, especially, the absence of clarity of words. Lots and lots of mushiness. Both readers care about the story and the book, which they co-authored. Both needed either more rehearsal or to hire professional readers to truly honor the story they dedicated themselves to ensuring was made public.

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

Never wanted to stop listening
Revisado: 10-29-19
The story is important and beautifully written. I like the way the present narrator is with us in time and still the story is unwrapped. So much like a good crime story that you long for the closure of a take down and reveal. Since it is true, that part Is a bit muted-but no less compelling or dramatic. I didn’t enjoy the accents and character reading voices for awhile but once they were all established, I found it less distracting. Overall it is well read and most certainly well written. I'm sure I will "read" it again. Despite the complexity, I also felt I knew where I was and where the story was. Really wanted some villains to be punished and NBCNews to acknowledge their deceitful actions and cowardice. Keeping my New Yorker; abandoning NBC. Keep watching this story.

Another good story and the beginning of the focus on the fascinating George Smiley. Detailed, deliberate inside word of persistent suspicious and hyper vigilant observation. Good voices. Enjoyed Jayson very much (listed to Legacy first and Hollander is terrific; adapted to this reader).

Historia
Peter Guillam, staunch colleague and disciple of George Smiley of the British Secret Service, otherwise known as the Circus, is living out his old age on the family farmstead on the south coast of Brittany when a letter from his old service summons him to London. The reason? His Cold War past has come back to claim him. Intelligence operations that were once the toast of secret London, and involved such characters as Alec Leamas, Jim Prideaux, George Smiley, and Peter Guillam himself, are to be scrutinized by a generation with no memory of the Cold War.

Historia
In Men Explain Things to Me, Rebecca Solnit takes on the conversations between men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don't. The ultimate problem, she shows in her comic, scathing essay, is female self-doubt and the silencing of women. Rebecca Solnit is the author of fourteen books about civil society, popular power, uprisings, art, environment, place, pleasure, politics, hope, and memory, most recently The Faraway Nearby, a book on empathy and storytelling.

Easy, well researched feminist critique
Revisado: 04-28-17
Enjoyed and valued the text; pieces delineating the warning women should be required reading and rereading. Did not enjoy the sound of the voice actor. Found her voice opposite to the text many times-soft, sweet, even delivery when the text confronting brutality, inequity, righteous anger. The piece framed by V.Woolfe seemed unnecessarily long and unexpectedly single-minded. Good writing, important content

This oral history takes the listener behind the curtain for all the show's highlights, from its origins as Comedy Central's underdog late-night program hosted by Craig Kilborn to Jon Stewart's long reign to Trevor Noah's succession, rising from a scrappy jester in the 24-hour political news cycle to become part of the beating heart of politics - a trusted source for not only comedy but also commentary, with a reputation for calling bullshit and an ability to effect real change in the world.

Excellent. Moving. Well researched. Creative approach to from
Revisado: 04-23-17
First-I loved it. If I could have listened nonstop, I would have. Very much like the shiw-compkex, creative, collaborative effort to tell a story worth telling. I will buy the print copy too. I rated the performance average because one voice simply hurt my ears. I actually tried to identify the voice actor, but never found a cast list. Honestly had to work at listening when he spoke-one if those visceral responses of dislike. I'm sure others won't mind but I found myself dreading the deliberated, over pronounced "Stephen Colbert" for example. The text, though, and decision to use actors, terrific.
