Wonderful
Revisado: 09-24-24
I didn't know if I should read this book right now since my best friend of 43 years recently died but it turns out it was the perfect time to read it. I laughed a lot, cried a little but mostly just enjoyed the heck out of it. Love the writing and love Caroline Lee's narration!

Not my favorite Bentley Little. I've read quite a few, so I'm familiar with his style but this had some real depravity to it. And the story wasn't actually very imaginative.

Revisado: 02-21-24
I last read this around 55 years ago. It fascinated and disturbed me-it was probably one of the first adult books I ever read. I hadn't thought of it in many years but it suddenly popped in my head one day. I debated whether to use a credit on it but I'm so glad I did! It was almost shocking how well I remembered it-not just the story but exact phrases. It was interesting to read it as an adult and I have to say it was just as fascinating to me now as years ago. I really hope it isn't lost to time and people stop reading it.

Historia
Peta Gore is the bane of her friend’s otherwise successful life. Maria Worth has come to hate her old friend - a noisy, vulgar glutton. There is no other way to describe Peta. She doesn’t just “have a good appetite” - she sucks and chomps and chews with relish. Not only are her table manners horrifying, but she has a habit of showing up at Maria’s carefully planned singles’ gatherings and spoiling everything by flirting with all the men.

Disappointing
Revisado: 07-16-23
I understand that if you write a book, you can darn well say what you want and get it printed, if your editor okays it. But there was a cruelty to M C Beaton's writing this time around that was disheartening. So much focus on this woman's eating and weight-it was tedious and unnecessary and if it's possible with a fictional character, unkind. But I love Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin books, so I'll keep listening.

Revisado: 03-14-23
I grew up reading Agatha Christie and P.G. Wodehouse. I've now listened to 7-8 of the Agatha Raisin series and they feel like a combination of those two authors. In other words, fun and enjoyable! Penelope Keith is phenomenal! It might be hard to switch narrators.

Enjoyable overall
Revisado: 02-28-23
I am enjoying this series but I don't know how much of that is due to Penelope Keith's performances-she is wonderful! I will say I've had about all I can take of the ridiculous Agatha-James relationship.

Historia
The aromas of wild thyme and Highland heather waft through Lochdubh, home to M. C. Beaton's eccentric policeman, Hamish Macbeth. Yet what the irascible constable smells in his latest case is the acrid scent of fear as an entire town is entrapped in something dark and deadly.... Yet as he deftly investigates the summer's high crimes and misdemeanors, he attracts the attention of his superiors. They feel a promotion and transfer will give him a larger playing field than Lochdubh. That's the last thing Macbeth wants.

I have read two of the Hamish Macbeth books thus far. I was skeptical that such short books would be satisfying at all but I loved them! This narrator is fantastic.

Enjoyed it overall
Revisado: 01-26-23
I did enjoy it. Enjoyed the characters, especially Zoe, with the notable exception of Jenny. I'm not sure she added anything positive to the story and detracted from it at times. I personally found her immature to an annoying degree. But good book overall and good narrator!

Historia
Opulent doesn't begin to describe the Arizona getaway where Lowell Thurman, his wife Rachel, and their three young sons have come for one glorious week. Everything at The Reata is perfect - although Rachel is a bit unnerved by the openly lustful gaze of one of the gardeners, something she doesn't mention to Lowell. Nor does he tell her about the frightening sensation he has in the pool of hands clutching at him, trying to pull him under.

Historia
Evan Michaels struggles with being different, with having the complete memories of two other people who lived sequentially before him. He fights loneliness and believes he is unique until he meets Poppy. She recognizes his struggle because she is like him, except that she is much older, remembering seven consecutive lives. But there is something else she must share with Evan - she is a member of the secretive Cognomina. They are, in effect, immortals - compiling experiences and skills over lifetimes into near superhuman abilities that they have used to drive history over centuries.
