Historia
Why are some people more successful than others? Self-confidence! What one great goal would you set if you knew you could not fail? What wonderful things would you want to do with your life if you were guaranteed success in anything you attempted? Your level of self-confidence determines the size of the goals you set, the energy and determination that you focus on achieving them, and the amount of persistence you apply to overcoming every obstacle.

Help
Revisado: 01-17-22
The audio for this book needs serious improvement. Whoever is narrating it is *not* someone who has audio knowledge. There is background noise, it echoes in certain parts, and - most egregiously - they are constantly breathing into the mic and making an obnoxious amount of lip-smacking noises. I have to listen in small increments because the audio is so frustrating to get through.

Historia
The capital has fallen. The Darkling rules Ravka from his shadow throne. Now the nation's fate rests with a broken Sun Summoner, a disgraced tracker, and the shattered remnants of a once-great magical army. Deep in an ancient network of tunnels and caverns, a weakened Alina must submit to the dubious protection of the Apparat and the zealots who worship her as a Saint. Yet her plans lie elsewhere, with the hunt for the elusive firebird and the hope that an outlaw prince still survives.

It's an all right conclusion.
Revisado: 06-08-17
Any additional comments?
It's a decent conclusion to the book. Unfortunately, the last bit is where it seems like it really starts to hit its stride with interesting supporting characters and a goal and by then it's too little too late. The book isn't all too unpredictable and near the end I felt myself just wanting to get to the ending rather than going through yet another battle. It's a decent conclusion, but honestly just go read Six of Crows.

This book has a good beginning and good ending. It makes some good progress in the story, but some of it gets caught up in wasting time on ships and boring political talk through the entire middle. I'd say if you liked the first one to give it a chance so you can see the story furthered, but get ready for a bit of a slog through the middle.

Good Start To A Series
Revisado: 05-30-17
Any additional comments?
This was an interesting start to a series. I think the world it sets up is unique and something I like learning more about. It provides a decent conflict, some decent characters, and seems to go at a nice pace. I am interested enough to find out what happens with the series and what happens to the characters. I'd say get this book and the books that follow! They're pretty good reads.
I'd say the only downfall was the villain reveal. It lacks a really solid foundation for the protagonists' motives. It wouldn't be such a big deal if the book didn't hinge on it.

Great Narrator, dull book.
Revisado: 05-18-17
Have you listened to any of Fred Berman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes! I really liked his narration before, and with this one he's given more material and shows more range. Best thing about this.
Any additional comments?
I really did not care for this book. But I’ll list some good points and bad points so you can decide for yourself.
The best thing about this book is the narrator. Anything read by them is great, and I think it’s what got me through the book. The ideas of magic that the world has is also..not bad. But this is all the good points I can give it. I’m sure the author worked hard on this book, but it falls flat in many areas.
The bad portions far outweigh the good. The characters in this book are largely uninteresting and one-dimensional. The traits all the characters have are so done to death that I could barely tell one from the other. They’re all largely unlikable too and seem to have motivations that will change on a whim if the plot demands it. Some things the characters do come right out of nowhere.
Though effort is attempted at giving some sort of backstory for each character, it’s seldom generally explained in walls of exposition that feels like I'm being read the phonebook. I know books are a wordy medium but it feels like it would be stronger if some of the character history or motivations are shown through action and not just told to the audience outright.
The conflicts in the book are also... uninteresting. I feel like outside of the first two chapters that nothing happens in this book. All the events could have been cut or condensed.
In conclusion: Narrator is great, the rest is really just dull.

Any additional comments?
It's a world with an interesting world, interesting characters, and wonderful dialogue. The characters are set up and explained well, they work well off of each other, and the setting is explained without being over explained. Everything really makes sense and I was invested in how it all turned out. I can barely think of anything bad to say about this book. I wish there were more to the series. It's great! If you're even looking at this page you should buy it!

A Good Direction
Revisado: 05-02-17
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I think there were a few scenes in here that evoked genuine emotion from characters, which is something I haven't seen in the novels so far. I had to quit reading at one part because it made me tear up. The descriptions of despair and emptiness that are described are particularly sad.
Any additional comments?
I think, overall, this book feels the most expansive of the series. It actually opens up the world beyond just one city and starts to heavily expand the lore and the walls outside of just one castle. Things really start to change in this book and it starts to feel like there's an actual overarching goal.

Would you try another book from Wendy Fisher and/or J.S. Arquin?
Seems like an interesting concept
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Flesh out some of the ideas.
Any additional comments?
It makes for an interesting short story, but some of the motivations for characters aren't made clear enough for them to make sense. I think it's still worth a read, though.

One of the better books
Revisado: 04-13-17
If you could sum up The Assassin's Blade in three words, what would they be?
It's a good start to the story. This format, with the small mini-novels, seem to fit the authors writing style more than writing full novels. She can write mini stories and then connect them overall. I was very invested in these stories and it ties in nicely to the novels that come after.
My problem with this story were that the romance seems so.. tacked on. There's no chemistry between the two leads and I spent the entire novel thinking that the main character didn't even deserve the guy she was with because she was such an unlikable brat.
What did you like best about this story?
The best thing about this story was definitely the tension in the stories. They were just long enough to keep me invested and wanted to know what was going to happen.
Which character – as performed by Elizabeth Evans – was your favorite?
I liked all the characters. The accents she does are all amazing.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Since it's cut up into stories, I wanted to listened to one story in entirely. Not the entire book.

Give it a try
Revisado: 04-13-17
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I was curious about this book since it was praised highly by people I know. I read it, and I may read the others, but it's not my particular taste. It provides some interesting ideas and lore and some interesting side characters.
What was most disappointing about Richard Kadrey’s story?
My problem was that the main character was not likable and you spend the entire story following him. Most of the time I just wanted to spend time with some of the sub characters that seemed more interesting.
And as a personal taste thing, I don't like it when authors write first person.
What does MacLeod Andrews bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
There were a few points - mostly in the beginning - where the diction was not clear. I had to concentrate to understand what he was saying. This got better as the book went on.
