Historia
The Secret Lives of Color tells the unusual stories of 75 fascinating shades, dyes, and hues. From blonde to ginger, the brown that changed the way battles were fought to the white that protected against the plague, Picasso’s blue period to the charcoal on the cave walls at Lascaux, acid yellow to kelly green, and from scarlet women to imperial purple, these surprising stories run like a bright thread throughout history. In this book, Kassia St. Clair has turned her lifelong obsession with colors and where they come from into a unique study of human civilization.

I found this fascinating - made me want to re-examine my watercolor pigments in an entirely different light. Well worth the credit - and the economic history of some of the colors is wonderful!

The only books I pre-order
Revisado: 11-08-22
The writing and the performances are top-notch. My first audio book was the first Lady Hardcastle book and it's a good thing - made me a regular listener to audio books. T. E. Kinsey's writing is great - light hearted, but not at all simple or stupid. Lady Hardcastle and Florence are believable characters and the dialogue between them is witty - made all the more so with Elizabeth Knowelden's perfect narration. I look forward to these books like no others.

Historia
Skeeve is a magician’s apprentice (and a wanna-be thief) until an assassin’s bolt kills his master, Garkin. Along with Aahz, the green-scaled, purple-tongued demon and master magician summoned by Garkin, he sets out on a quest to get even. The road to vengeance is bound to prove rocky, however, because Skeeve can barely light a candle with his beginning magic, and Aahz has lost his own considerable magical abilities as a consequence of Garkin’s summoning spell.

Historia
From the New York Times best-selling authors of America's First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton - a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. In this haunting, moving, and beautifully written book, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza's story as it's never been told before - not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right.

Well written and well performed.
Revisado: 11-20-20
This is my second book by these two authors and I'm glad I listened to it. Historical fiction is my jam - and these authors are a force to be reckoned with in this genre. Even though it is a long listen, it did not feel long at all. And it's wonderful to hear/read a story that may be, at least in part, familiar, but from a different perspective. Their research is obviously substantial, but at no point did I feel as if I were attending a lecture. And coming at Hamilton sideways (i.e., from his wife's perspective, rather than a first person story or a political rival) made him feel/read very human, foibles and all.

Historia
The true story of the Earp brothers, Doc Holliday, and the famous Battle at the OK Corral, by the New York Times best-selling author of Dodge City and Wild Bill. On the afternoon of October 26, 1881, nine men clashed in what would be known as the most famous shootout in American frontier history. Thirty bullets were exchanged in 30 seconds, killing three men and wounding three others. The fight sprang forth from a tense, hot summer.

I learned nothing new from this book
Revisado: 11-20-20
If you know nothing about the gun fight at the O.K. Corral, this would be a fine book. If you've seen Tombstone, you'll get the general gist, although not completely historically accurate. The narration drove me nuts - dude's voice was not pleasant to listen to for that long. I was ultimately disappointed in this because there wasn't much new for me. At times it gets bogged down into details that seem pretty irrelevant and if you wanted to know what Wyatt Earp was like as a person, this won't do much to answer that question.

Fun listen. Great narration and Mr. Smith creates fabulous characters. Sometimes funny, always charming. The narration is good, but Ms. Lecat is a South African rather than Botswanan - and perhaps a native narrator would be better. Small complaint - her narration sounds more British than African.

Enjoyable Listen
Revisado: 11-20-20
I needed something a little less "heavy" than I normally listen to or read - and this served its purpose well. The narration was great and I was honestly surprised upon finding out "whodunnit" - so it was at least, unpredictable. It was an enjoyable, easy-to-listen-to 7 hours.

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children's librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed $25 in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that's sure to become Half Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she's mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead.

Thoroughly enjoyable listen
Revisado: 11-09-20
I accidentally fell in love with Molly Harper's writing style, as well as the narrators used for her books. I most often read and listen to a great deal of nonfiction and a Molly Harper book came up in a 2 for 1 credit sale selection. Listened to it - laughed until my stomach hurt - and to use a horrible pun, that was all she wrote. I'm now a devoted fan of her books. That started my love for her style, her sense of humor, her great character development and the general story lines. Amanda Ranconi's narration is fabulous and perhaps makes the stories what they are in some ways. If you are looking for lighter fare (because let's be honest - this is not Dostoyevsky), written with a sense of humor and some intelligence, and kind of like the whole True Blood meets Willy Wonka thing - then I highly recommend anything by Molly Harper. It was a fantastic way to spend almost 9 hours.

Historia
In 1949, things like this just didn’t happen: A quiet New Jersey resident took a morning walk with a 9 mm Luger pistol. In twelve minutes he murdered thirteen neighbors...and then went back to bed. Howard Unruh went from obscurity to infamy overnight. Even after his obsessive diaries were discovered - a catalogue of simmering rage, petty grievances, and sexual repression - the anomalous crime seemed incomprehensible. Succeeding decades would confirm that Unruh’s “Walk of Death” was just the beginning. The prototype for the modern mass murderer, he would usher in a new age of violence in America.

Decent, but not enthralling.
Revisado: 11-09-20
It's a decent diversion. I had never heard of the criminal in focus here, so at least that part was interesting. Other than learning about a new-to-me criminal, it was a pretty average listen. Didn't hate it - didn't love it.

Historia
At a remote little inn not far from the Kansas homestead of Laura Ingalls Wilder lived the Bender family. These pioneers welcomed unwary visitors with jackrabbit stew and a sledgehammer to the skull. In time, their apple orchard gave up its secrets - a burial ground for their mutilated victims, each stripped of their possessions. The devilish enterprise on “Hell’s Half-Acre” would earn the Bloody Benders an undying place in the annals of American infamy. But it was the mysterious fate of eldest daughter, Kate, that would make them the stuff of mythic campfire prairie tales.
