Really Deep and Upsetting......and Wonderful
Revisado: 08-14-23
I admit, I got this book because of the title seemed to be another true crime story with some tawdry elements to it. I thought I would get a good dose of southern fried people acting up.
That was there, yes. The casual abuse in the book by the males towards their wives and children was simply disgusting and seemingly sadly typical for many growing up in that fashion. It would have been easy to just keep going with that theme, and easy to focus on the murder itself versus just mentioning it happening in passing. Instead, he does an excellent job of humanizing his father and grandfather, even at their worst.
I found myself crying during this book.....not out of anger or disgust at an abusive act, but instead when his "Uncle Roy" died. I found myself quietly cheering on his father during his better moments.....and then feeling the fear and the anger of this family with his abusive and violent was brought to bear upon them.
The trauma this man is still enduring, and the fact he is in such a good place now is simply amazing. I am truly inspired by this man. This book is worth your time, and it does give you a good picture of family in a true sense.

Historia
Wrapped in the Flag chronicles the radical right-wing world of the 1960s, when conspiracy ruled and the John Birch Society made national headlines. The daughter of a John Birch Society leader, Claire Connor introduces us to the extreme ideas of a powerful political fringe group dispensing radical solutions to America's problems. Following in the footsteps of its hero, Senator Joseph McCarthy, the John Birch Society believed that an international Communist conspiracy was on the verge of taking over the government of the United States.

Hardcore. Upsetting.
Revisado: 03-23-23
This book will go straight into your ear raw dog. Ms. Conner is a woman of great loving courage to grow up with these fanatical fanatics and manage to be sane and have compassion for other human beings outside of her family and race is just astounding. Ms. Conner is astounding. I don't agree with her politics but I would trust her with my children. And it is disconcerting to note that the politics of the Birchers have not changed, and now many of their talking points are mainstream ideals on the right.
The best thing though about the book is that despite how much you may dislike her parents she still portrays them as human beings. I don't want to spoil the book but when her parents go through tough moments despite all their cruelties you still feel for them. They were just misguided humans, not monsters.

Historia
The very strange but nevertheless true story of the dark underbelly of a 1960s hippie utopia. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. But there was a dark side to that scene as well. Many didn't make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery to this day.

Mind Obliterated
Revisado: 02-10-23
Well, let me start by saying that if you want to keep you view of the 60s, hippies, country rock, American pop music in general sanitized then please don't read this book. The author starts from the first sentences ruthlessly dismantling any thoughts you may have had about people like Jim Morrison, David Crosby, Jimi Hendrix, and many others in that era. If you have delicate sensibilities in general I would also advise caution in regards to reading this book.
Is it a bit conspiracy oriented? A tad perhaps. But....there is a lot of smoke in here and eventually there might indeed be a fire burning somewhere. There is just too much stuff, too many coincidences, and if you have, like me, done research into America's covert past, Manifest Destiny, the CIA, the Marine Corps and the military's acting as goons for the business class of America in their imperial adventures around the world (as they still do) everything in this book will make terrible sense.....especially his take on the hippies. If you're a hippie, and you want to stay blissfully ignorant about the origins of your movement/lifestyle then again, be careful reading this book.
The author mentions that he felt pain of his own as his rock heroes were dethroned. He mentions how he literally grew up on what is now called classic rock and he can't help but be changed after this completing this project. I believe him. You will really come to think about the nature of show business itself after reading this book. I know I have.

I have spent a lot of time absorbing true crime stories and been regaled with stories of malefactors of the first order and these dirty cops are the worst. Their abuses and crimes are cataloged in this book and it is not for those with delicate sensibilities. Excellent writing and it is read well.

As a black man it never ceases to amaze me the hatred that some have had for us and the levels of justifications for horrific actions to defend their privilege and their paradigm of domination. It is well worth the read though I am honestly numb upon finishing it.

For this rousing, revisionist history, the former head of exhibitions at England's National Maritime Museum has combed original documents and records to produce a most authoritative and definitive account of piracy's "Golden Age." As he explodes many accepted myths (i.e. "walking the plank" is pure fiction), Cordingly replaces them with a truth that is more complex and often bloodier.

Historia
Over the last two decades, America has been falling deeper and deeper into a statistical mystery: Poverty goes up. Crime goes down. The prison population doubles. Fraud by the rich wipes out 40 percent of the world’s wealth. The rich get massively richer. No one goes to jail. In search of a solution, journalist Matt Taibbi discovered the Divide, the seam in American life where our two most troubling trends—growing wealth inequality and mass incarceration—come together, driven by a dramatic shift in American citizenship: Our basic rights are now determined by our wealth or poverty.

Racist As All Outdoors
Revisado: 06-06-22
A literary classic, yes. An important and horribly honest story as well as it openly and shamefully speak on the violent nature of civilizing the world. It is an important book I think to understand what white colonial racism is, and how this white culture projected their own darkness and ignorance on the rest of the world to justify its own robbery and degradation of anyone deemed unequal or inferior.

Deep Than a Mother.......
Revisado: 05-21-22
Family, this man really gets at the essence of things on this book. Recently, I have been looking into raising my consciousness and I have read books by Dr. David Hawkins like "Power versus Force" and such and this book really goes into similar concepts with a pointed realism that really changed my mind, so to speak. All you have is now, and that has been made crystal clear.

Letting Go describes a simple and effective means by which to let go of the obstacles to enlightenment and become free of negativity. During the many decades of the author's clinical psychiatric practice, the primary aim was to seek the most effective ways to relieve human suffering in all of its many forms. The inner mechanism of surrender was found to be of great practical benefit and is described in this book.

This book can help heal a lot of hurts and old stiff hanging around. It is not a religious book per se. It is instead a book with teachings and techniques. I would suggest it.
