Bereft, she developed a life-threatening eating disorder, and went through a challenging recovery process which paved the way for her work as a clinical psychologist decades later. Not a True Thriller
Revisado: 10-18-24
This is a book about motherless daughters and eating disorders, with a thriller subplot. Its moving depiction of a brave young woman fighting anorexia is the center of the book, and readers looking for that type of story will enjoy this book. It is not, however, a true thriller with a compelling plot.

Historia
Joanna Eberhart is a creative, self-possessed wife and mother, newly arrived in seemingly idyllic Stepford, Connecticut. But as she and her family begin settling in, she’s jarred by the unaccountable sameness of the local wives: all flawlessly attractive, with perfectly maintained homes—and little seeming interest in anything else. As curiosity turns to concern, Joanna finds herself unraveling a web of malice that threatens her very existence.

Well-narrated Horror Classic
Revisado: 08-09-24
Strong narration makes this tense, well-paced classic even better. A quick listen from a time when publishers released shorter genre novels, this story takes on misogyny and the dark, conformist side of upward mobility in American suburbs. Offers more character devleopment than the many movie and TV adaptations it has inspired.

Historia
After arriving on Block Island to find her birth mother, Blake Bronson becomes convinced she’s the heroine of a gothic novel—the kind that allowed her intermittent escape from a traumatic childhood. How else to explain the torrential rain, the salt-worn mansion known as White Hall, and the restless ghost purported to haunt its halls? But before Blake can discern the novel’s ending, she’s found dead, murdered in a claw-foot tub. The proprietress of White Hall stands accused.

Vivid, Gothic Fun
Revisado: 03-22-24
Spooky tale of gothic ghosts, long lost sisters, and all-too-human predators haunting a Rhode Island B & B in winter. Listened to it for Women in Horror month, but dark mystery fans who don‘t mind a ghost in a secret passageway will love it too. Loved the vivid setting & fun “meta” style commentary on gothic lit tropes. #gothic #spooky #sisters

Historia
Arriving in L.A. to visit the set of a new streaming horror series, journalist Laura Warren witnesses a man jumping from a bridge, landing right behind her car. Here we go, she thinks. It’s started. Because the series she’s reporting on is a remake of a ’90s horror flick. A cursed ’90s horror flick, which she starred in as a child—and has been running from her whole life.

Hollywood can be terrifying! I stayed up late listening to this fun, twisty tale. No wonder it’s long-listed for the Bram Stoker award for best horror novel. The American child star turned English journalist protagonist presented an accent challenge for the narrator, and I think she did well.

Compelling Thriller
Revisado: 09-12-23
Enjoyable psychological thriller that provides a creepily accurate view into the mind of a murderous narcissist and reminds us that marriages may not be what they seem. Audiobook co-narrated by BBC actress Nicola Walker is compelling. The device of a true crime podcast-within-a-story works well in an audiobook (not sure I would like it as much on the page). Saw one twist coming, but there are a few well-crafted surprises towards the end.

Historia
Liz Rocher is coming home . . . reluctantly. As a Black woman, Liz doesn’t exactly have fond memories of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a predominantly white town. But her best friend is getting married, so she braces herself for a weekend of awkward, passive-aggressive reunions. Liz has grown, though; she can handle whatever awaits her. But on the night of the wedding, somewhere between dancing and dessert, the newlyweds’ daughter, Caroline, disappears—and the only thing left behind is a piece of white fabric covered in blood.

Vivid, Twisty Lippman Mystery & Take on 60s Journalism

Not just a who done it, but a where fine it; as setting becomes character. This is both a tale of two murders in different racial and class, and a “newspaper book.” Maddy, the ambitious, yearning former housewife turned reporter is a delightfully flawed main character. There are 2 twists in the final hours that I did not see coming! The narrator offers a varied and interesting performance.

Excellent Plot If You Stick With It
Revisado: 09-06-20
The plot and ending are fabulous! You can see why the mystery coming together as it does has resulted in Ryan's multiple award nominations. And Ryan always writes about Boston elegantly. The narrator did a good job, especially as harsh and ambitious DA Martha Gardener. I could not give this 5 stars though, because I walked away from this in the middle for a month. I read another book before retuning. I almost missed the stellar second half, because the characters felt a little generic. I don't mind an unlikable character, but I felt like I couldn't feel the core of any of them. I can now see the challengers the plot created for characterization, and damn do you know them in the end. So stick with it.

When she was sixteen years old, Angela Wong—one of the most popular girls in school—disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.

Stay Up Listening to This Compelling, Twisty Tale
Revisado: 10-26-19
Secrets will kill you. Geo, Kai and Angela are a fascinating trio and their high school friendship is at the center of this tense, well-paced story. One can't help but root for Geo, an admitted accomplice to her friend's murder and "horrible person," yet one distrusts her. Be prepared to stay up late listening to the final 2 hours. There are 2 clever twists near the end. The novel takes a very firm, and somewhat simplistic, stand in the nature vs nurture debate, but offers wonderful storytelling. The ending feels too rushed, so I could not give the story 5 stars, but it's a great read/listen. Good narration! In particular, the intense male characters are read by La Voy as both district and believable.

Stellar novel about two girls caught in the pull of dark secrets and academic & professional competition. Past sins reemerge as the bright girls become researchers in an intense, male-dominated field. The narrator performs well. Highly recommend this!
