Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Better than the first
Revisado: 04-10-25
I think it speaks to most series a lot how the second book ends up being better than the first. This one did a great job. I’m excited to now go to book 3 so I can see what happens regarding that ending.
That being said the main narrator carried this whole book. Her performance was amazing; you hurt and felt with her. That being said, I am not a fan at all of the narrator who read the final chapter. There was little to no life in it and I could hear every breathe he took. If I could give separate ratings for the narrators based on performance they would be on the far different ends of the scale.

Henrietta Doryn has never enjoyed fighting. She'd rather be in the kitchen baking cookies. But it's her duty as Warrior Princess to face off against the forces of evil. As such, she's unceremoniously shooed from her kingdom to go eliminate the all-powerful Dark Lord next door. Keith Monfort has never enjoyed ruling with an iron fist. He'd prefer to be in his workroom tinkering with practical magic. But it's his duty to lead the Dark Enchanted Forest and the forces of evil. So when Henrietta shows up at his door, he's only too happy to invite her in for tea to talk it out instead.

Very Cozy!
Revisado: 02-10-25
This was so cozy and calm and nice. A great RPG style experience with not a lot of high stakes. I’ve been reading a lot of those lately so having one that is this chill was just what I needed.
The narration was fantastic. Both narrators did a great job with what they each brought. My only issue was what they brought. I have listened to other books narrated by these 2 separately and so I knew going in that I loved their narration styles. However, I wish these 2 would have conversed and got on the same page with the energy, voices, and everything before recording because they were VERY different to the extent that a lot of the time it was taking me out of the story.

Historia
What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry.

This was a very good time
Revisado: 02-06-25
I like it when I read fantasy books like this and they make me want to play more dnd. This was a good time with good characters, perfect pacing and world building. Just all around fun for the RPG lover.
The narrator also did an amazing job. I felt each character in personality and vibes. 👏👏👏

Thankful for the Reviews
Revisado: 02-03-25
I was about to not even give this book the time of day because of the narration. I’m thankful the reviews expressed the story was worth powering through. Honestly the narration was only really bad when she was speaking as the narrator and the main character. The rest of the characters she gave a bit more effort for which is the only reason I bothered giving her 2 stars. I was honestly going to turn it off within the first chapter due to it sounding like Siri was reading the book to me. The reviews are the only reason I kept going and I appreciate them for it.
That being said, I enjoyed this. I like books that consider the reader competent enough to experience world building as it comes up and spell every aspect out at the beginning. It was a different take on a lot of different aspects of our world and this new fantasy world. Very interested to see the next one.

Historia
I have never been favored by the gods. Far from it, thanks to Zeus. Living as a cursed office clerk for the Order of Thieves, I just keep my head down and hope the capricious beings who rule from Olympus won’t notice me. Not an easy feat, given San Francisco is Zeus’ patron city, but I make do. I survive. Until the night I tangle with a different god. The worst god. Hades. For the first time ever, the ruthless, mercurial King of the Underworld has entered the Crucible—the deadly contest the gods hold to determine a new ruler to sit on the throne of Olympus.

This was a waste of time
Revisado: 02-01-25
I genuinely was annoyed from start to finish. This book was the author repeatedly just trying to show off that they did research over Greek mythology instead of actually attempting to incorporate into the content, the world building was nonexistent, it wanted us to feel bad about a death without really building that character into anything, giving the character a useful background and then not using any of it, and giving the worst reasoning for every decision made. It is very much going to be the first in a series and I will not be touching the rest.
And when it comes to books I don’t like, I can at least rely on the narrator to at least make the experience bearable. That was not the case with this. It was flat and with no emotion. Every gods accent is just English which the narrator then puts no emotion into. And every other champion is just robotic in how they speak. I was very let down all the way around.

I’m a fan
Revisado: 01-30-25
I loved this book a lot. From the aesthetic, to the take on OCD, to the trials. All phenomenal, I did pick up on the twist at the very end from the beginning but there were enough twist in the middle that it was okay. My only real complaint was I wanted them to explore more of phantasma to look for what they were looking for but instead kept getting side tracked with…other activities. They were well done…activities but the point still stands that I kept wanting them to look. Regardless still a big fan.
And the narrator was stunning in all that she did. Every voice, every expression, every description read by her plunged me deeper into the story and I appreciate her so much for that.

My Heart Hurts but it was so good

I hurt. Everything hurts. Everything was stunning; the story, the characters, all of it.
I’m also always impressed by this narrator. She does incredible work to the point I want to listen to everything she has worked on.

When the witch built the 40-flight tower, she made very sure to do the whole thing properly. Each flight contains a dreadful monster, ranging from a diamond-scaled dragon to a pack of slavering goblins. Should a prince battle his way to the top, he will be rewarded with a golden sword - and the lovely Princess Floralinda. But no prince has managed to conquer the first flight yet, let alone get to the 40th. In fact, the supply of fresh princes seems to have quite dried up.

Revisado: 01-23-25
I loved every moment of this. The author is so amazing. I wanted to go through this book after catching up in all of the Locked Tomb Series and by the stars I love the writing and story so much.
Also the narrator is just stunning with everything they do. My absolute favorite.

Welp That Hurt
Revisado: 01-22-25
This was a good addition to the series. Normally little in between stories have you wondering by the end if it was necessary and this one felt like it was. The first book left me feeling very little for Adena even in the end but this made her feel like a fleshed out person and not just a stand in friend figure.
The performances were very good. I enjoyed both of the narrators. My only hang up was the odd choice of the narrator for Makoto reading Makoto’s inner dialogue in his voice but then putting on a voice that was comical for Makoto’s speaking voice. It pulled me out of the story and made me question the choice. But otherwise the emotions they both portrayed were great.

This Felt Good
Revisado: 01-21-25
I liked this. This made the love story very believable. The main characters flip flopped a bit too much on how they were feeling which would get bothersome but otherwise very good. The way it ended was weird and I’m interested to hear how they talk themselves out of that one.
That being said. The performances were good but I feel like there needs to be more communication between the narrators regarding the accents/voices of the characters. There were times (and 2 times very specifically) where the voices the narrators would use for the same characters were so unbelievably different it would yank me from the story with how jarring it was. But otherwise it was very good.
