Historia
In 1943, Irene Woodward abandons an abusive fiancé in New York to enlist with the Red Cross and head to Europe. She makes fast friends in training with Dorothy Dunford, a towering Midwesterner with a ferocious wit. Together they are part of an elite group of women, nicknamed Donut Dollies, who command military vehicles called Clubmobiles at the front line, providing camaraderie and a taste of home that may be the only solace before troops head into battle.

Good Night Irene
Revisado: 07-14-23
It was a pleasure to learn about this piece of forgotten history and left me wondering what else we don’t know about women’s roles in World War II. I am a great fan of Urrea’s writing but as much as I loved the story, the book didn’t measure up to his other work. This one seemed to be built on events, but lacked the depth of character development and complexity that I have enjoyed in previous novels. Keep writing LuisI look forward to reading whatever comes next.

Cutting for Stone
Revisado: 07-14-23
I found a story engaging from the very beginning but towards the end it felt a bit predictable. The descriptions of medical practices gave depth to the story, especially when comparing Ethiopia to the United States. Most of the time I liked the narration, but when it came to Stone and his family of origin the accents just sounded strange and the American accents were too flat. I can’t imagine how much time and work went into creating such a unique saga.

Historia
Amid daily reports of violence, Cushla lives a quiet life with her mother in a small town near Belfast. By day she teaches at a parochial school; at night she fills in at her family’s pub. There she meets Michael Agnew, a barrister who’s made a name for himself defending IRA members. Against her better judgment—Michael is not only Protestant but older and married—Cushla lets herself get drawn in by him and his sophisticated world, and an affair ignites.

Beautifully read and written.I enjoyed the pace of the book that was so slow and deliberate in the beginning that I almost didn’t stick with it. But so glad I did. As it picked up momentum the characters pulled at my heart. The story, set in Ireland could have been set in so many places where race or religion or social class fracture both communities and individual lives. It is a global tale and yet, particularly Irish. I highly recommend it to readers of well written historic fiction.

Historia
In We Don't Know Ourselves, Fintan O'Toole weaves his own experiences into Irish social, cultural, and economic change, showing how Ireland, in just one lifetime, has gone from a reactionary "backwater" to an almost totally open society - perhaps the most astonishing national transformation in modern history. O'Toole narrates the once unthinkable collapse of the all-powerful Catholic Church, brought down by scandal and by the activism of ordinary Irish. He relates the horrific violence of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, which led most Irish to reject violent nationalism.

One of the best books I’ve read this year. It it’s a memoir, it’s history, it’s great storytelling I seldom read non-fiction but I will now read anything O’Toole writes.

Hard story to read., The characters were amazingly resilient but I found myself getting anxious as they kept making what I would consider bad decisions. Asi la vida es.

Historia
In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new flu are quarantined together. Into Julia's regimented world step two outsiders - Doctor Kathleen Lynn, a rumored Rebel on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney. In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other's lives in unexpected ways.

The Pull of the Stars
Revisado: 04-01-22
If you can get through all the descriptions of early 20th century medical practices related to childbirth, the story is compelling, I admire a writer who can set a story in a building or a room, like a Gentleman in Moscow. The reader was excellent. The portrait of Ireland during The Great War and the Spanish Influenza epidemic gave some perspective to the current Covid pandemic. For anyone who does not or has not lived in a culture steeped in religion, Donoghue creates a vivid image of the power of the Catholic Church and its institutions in Ireland at this time. I 'd like to think I know quite a bit of women's history but did not know about Kathleen Lind, a pioneer, physician, activist in Sinn Fein and a politician. Any one of those roles alone would have been challenging. If I could give the book a 4.5 I would because the the plot was at time too predictable but not enough to set the book aside. First of Donoghue's books I've read. I look forward to more.

While I know that any writer tells the story that he or she needs or wants to tell, I found the details of his father dying difficult to listen to. Perhaps because I’ve been there. Nevertheless, Garcia‘s narrative was moving, entertaining and insightful. It left me wanting more.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

McBride is a master storyteller. This is the best book I’ve read all year. Loved the characters, dialogue didn’t miss a beat, the story is humorous, sad and hopeful. “Does you do or does you not?” asked Sister Paul. Do read this book!
