Having left behind a promising career at Interpol, he’s eager to prove himself to his new team.

Get off the couch and do some research
Revisado: 11-27-21
I’ll start with the good. Narrator is great. Characters are interesting and well developed and most of the story is interesting enough to keep me listening. Then the author starts in on the Catholic Church and all the good work goes out the window. To avoid spoilers I’ll only say that there is a nun who apparently has never heard of Jesus and lives her life in accordance with only the most ludicrous of Old Testament writings. She’s a bad apple and I would have been able to overlook the stereotyping of the nuns from 70 years ago until the author decides that the Pope in this situation would have given this foul creature the full backing of the Vatican. I can understand the need to create a bad guy with a rich and powerful institution backing them but if the author had spent 5 minutes researching the Pope or spent a weekend at a local seminary where the nuns and priests drive electric cars and teach technology to the underserved and poor and are more concerned with saving our planet and each other than they are about abortion and mortal sin, maybe her villain would have been more realistic than the tired 1950’s stereotype they’re willing to sell. Who cares who you misrepresent if you’re making money though right? I will say that although the author may have created the most heavy handed and unrealistic caricature of the church I’ve come across they certainly not the first. It is telling that anytime an author wants to use a book to take a shot at organized religion, the Catholic Church is the inevitable choice because it’s safe with no chance of reprisal. Some other religious institutions might not be so nice. Maybe if these writers had the backbone to say what they mean and include other religions to aim their pen at, I might actually give the writing some thought. As it is it’s just cowards spouting non sense for a dollar.

Historia
Sheriff Martha Ettinger reunites with once-again lover and sometime private detective Sean Stranahan to investigate the death of a woman who was stranded in a spring snowstorm. When a fly wallet is found in a pannier on the saddle of the woman's horse, the leather engraved with the initials EH, Stranahan shows the wallet to Patrick Willoughby, the president of the Madison River Liars and Fly Tiers Club. Only a few days before, Willoughby was approached by a man selling fishing gear that had belonged to a famous outdoorsman and writer.

An Ode to Papa
Revisado: 02-09-20
McCafferty makes known his affinity for all things Hemingway within the first few pages and why not? They are both men who’s love for literature may only be surpassed by a love for the outdoors (and women). Initially I was all in for a Hemingway themed treasure hunt featuring the great Sean Stranahan but I soon began to yearn for the people and places that make this series what it is. Less from the usual cast of characters, less time fishing and pondering on Montana’s idyllic rivers and less time spent by McCafferty explaining what makes Montana so different and special in his eyes.
A solid entry in the series but far from my favorite.

Historia
From Martin Clark - praised by Entertainment Weekly as "our best legal-thriller writer" - comes a wickedly clever, tenderhearted, and intricately plotted novel about a hard-luck lawyer's refusal to concede defeat, even as fate, the court system, and a gang of untouchable con artists conspire against him.

Engaging and well read

What a find! A well written and equally well read legal adventure set in rural Virginia. The main character is a likable, flawed lawyer who finds himself in an impossible situation created by the greed of strangers. Well worth the credit.
