Historia
Often considered one of the first ever psychological thrillers, Crime and Punishment is a gripping tale of a poverty-stricken young man in Saint Petersburg, Russia, who hatches a plan to kill someone for money. Once the deed is done, he finds himself racked with guilt, confusion and disgust for his act. In this new recording, Will Poulter gives new life to the troubled protagonist, Rodion Raskolnikov, in a performance that will have you questioning where we draw the line between right and wrong.

An insightful exploration of ferocious guilt and the extent of altruism
Revisado: 02-05-25
A timeless classic in which the behaviour of characters is examined along a common narrative line. This novel, is undoubtedly a masterpiece of Russian literature; although today’s reader easily relates to the feelings and dilemmas faced by memorable characters. Moreover, it has taken upon itself the task of a deep intellectual exploration of human motivation (us being moral subjects), the overwhelming mental strain that exerts its force as soon as an idea is entertained, then as it passes to concrete action, and finally sooner or later, the consequences (or an unexpected setting in motion). In my opinion the book doesn’t try to make an admonition, instead it sets the questions necessary to debate what drives a person’s choice when presented with a particular arrangement of both advantages and obstacles that may arise from societal norms, status, and personality traits in an individual that while engaged in loving, expecting, caring or not; it’s bound to a reality that depends upon perception; also in permanent interaction with a vast array of different forms of that hard define, intrinsically delineating whatever is meant by “the other”.

Historia
This collection of Buk's grimmest diaries gives an insight into the noir and brutal Los Angeles that Bukowski observed and lived so well. He was a legend in his time: a madman, a recluse, a lover...tender, vicious...never the same. These are exceptional stories that came pounding out of his violent and depraved life - horrible and holy. You cannot listen to them and come away the same again.

Great listen

Besides the characteristic C.B.’s style -and therefore countless self-titled writers butchering their already flimsy sentences with swearing, drug-apologetical statements and, specially that hideous fake misanthropy- that alone makes it somehow difficult to approach the original without wiping away some miscopnceptions. I think that could be the main reason Bukowski is one of those authors who is loved or rejected altogether, a writer to whom a context-minded perspective is likely denied, the verdict bestowed upon him way too fast. For myself, I am on the side of those who enjoy and relate to his writings, to the character he portrayed, Reasonably enough one cannot blindly worship the entirety of his literary production -as readers we are allowed to dislike without censoring at the same time- but these short stories make, to my opinion, a rather fine quality collection. Now, about the performance of the narrator, I felt it was fantastic, inflections made just when needed, tone variations sustained for as long as the text required, never conveying the sensation of listening to a mockery. The low, rasp, sliglthly slow quality of the voice, felt quite appropriate to the author’s aesthetic intentions. In this sense, it’s worth noticing the contrast between the narrative-voice (tough, ethilic and smokey hoarseness) and the human CB’s voice (adding the soft, kind, thoroughly sensitive). In sum, great performance of great stories.

In this timely and profoundly original book, best-selling writer and physician Gabor Maté looks at the epidemic of addictions in our society, tells us why we are so prone to them, and what is needed to liberate ourselves from their hold on our emotions and behaviours.

Deep yet simple

A beautifully written exploration of the addiction phenomena, Scientifically rigorous when such an approach becomes imperative, but also an enlightening narrative that won’t hide the author’s loving nature, nor evade an introspective look that isn’t afraid of self-criticism.
Being a physician myself, having lived through the terrifying experience of childhood traumatic events, then a slave of substance addiction, not for pleasure just to feel a little less guilt and pain -almost ravaged in all aspects of my being-, now in recovery aided by combined treatment (psychotherapy and pharmacological); i think reading this title is to be found an interesting and enriching instance of learning, whether the reader is versed in neuroscience or medical knowledge, being oneself afflicted by an addiction, or having to deal with the saddening proximity. of a loved person’s blind path of self-destruction.
