Historia
For millennia, humans have used one simple method to solve problems. Whether it's planting crops, building skyscrapers, developing photographs, or designing the first microchip, all creators follow the same steps to engineer progress. But this powerful method, the "engineering method", is an all but hidden process that few of us have heard of—let alone understand—but that influences every aspect of our lives.

ok if you can't get over the blatant wokism
Revisado: 07-18-23
great topic, poir execution. blatant wokism creeps in early and sticks around. calling anyone the makeup label "cis-" is just one of the issues. casting the engineering field as inherently racist and then twisted that lie every chance they get is off-putting and detracts from what could have been a great book

Historia
An Anonymous-style rabble-rouser, an Arab Spring hacktivist, a black-hat hacker, an old-school cipherpunk, and an online troll are each offered a choice: go to prison or help protect the United States, putting their brains and skills to work for the government for one year. But being a white hat doesn't always mean you work for the good guys.

Historia
Sherlock Holmes is dead--or so most of the world thinks. His fatal plunge over the Reichenbach Falls as he struggled with his archenemy, Moriarty, has been widely reported. But Holmes has escaped and is alive. In his immediate circle, only Holmes's brother, the lethargic genius Mycroft, knows of his survival. Even Dr. Watson thinks that the great detective is dead. Among his enemies, Sebastian Moran, Moriarty's chief henchman, knows of Holmes's probable escape and waits for their inevitable meeting.

Mars is changing. Seemingly overnight the once "Red" planet is turning to gray. Something is happening, something unnatural. A team of, literally, rocket scientists figure out a way to send a probe, very fast, to Mars to determine how and why it is changing. However, when the probe is destroyed well short of the formerly red planet, it's apparent that Mars is being used as a staging ground. The only viable target for that staging ground is Earth.

Historia
David Marquet, an experienced Navy officer, was used to giving orders. Marquet acted like any other captain until, one day, he unknowingly gave an impossible order, and his crew tried to follow it anyway. Marquet realized he was leading in a culture of followers, and they were all in danger unless they fundamentally changed the way they did things. Struggling against his own instincts to take control, he instead achieved the vastly more powerful model of giving control.

take a shot everytime they mention microservices
Revisado: 11-29-21
lol, don't do this you'll die.
overall a pretty ok primer on architecture. though, the number of references to microservices even when not related to the current topic is annoying, by the midpoint my eyes were involuntarily rolling with every mention. they have truly drunk the Kool aid. not everything can be or should be a microservice, the over reference to this particular architecture will cause the book to dated once the new shiny comes along.

Sh!tty author swears gratuitously
Revisado: 10-19-21
While I'm open minded, using the word "sh*tty" in what feels like every other paragraph is unnecessary. it didn't contribute to the narrative.
Also, quitting yourself for a chapter opening is the height of dbaggery.

reads like a dissertation which is probably not surprising. interesting points brought up that should inspire thought on both sides of the issue. especially amongst the cyber defense crowd.
however, the narration is down right horrible and robotic, speedingv it up to 1.25x got rid of the specs and reduce the robotic sound. though nothing can fix the numerous mispronunciations

Animals plainly know where they're going, but how they get there has remained surprisingly mysterious - until now. In Supernavigators, award-winning author David Barrie catches us up on the cutting-edge science. Here are astounding animals of every stripe: Dung beetles that steer by the light of the Milky Way. Ants and bees that rely on patterns of light invisible to humans. Sea turtles and moths that find their way using Earth's magnetic field. Humpback whales that swim thousands of miles while holding a rock-steady course.

The narration is so very slow. The author often puts unneeded asides in and then descends into a sanctimonious diatribe at the end. Returning this one.
