Historia
Recruited into the fundamentalist Quiverfull movement as a young wife, Tia Levings learned that being a good Christian meant following a list of additional life principles—a series of secret, special rules to obey. Being a godly and submissive wife in Christian Patriarchy included strict discipline, isolation, and an alternative lifestyle that appeared wholesome to outsiders. Women were to be silent, “keepers of the home.” A Well-Trained Wife is an unforgettable memoir about a woman's race to save herself and her family and details the ways that extreme views can manifest in a marriage.

Breathtaking
Revisado: 08-19-24
So beautifully written and well-paced I finished it all in one day. Having Levings as the narrator was an unexpected treat. Even though this is her story, the book somehow felt like a tender love letter to grieving women, especially those who escaped fundamentalism.

Great series, great performance (but NOT Brianna)
Revisado: 04-08-16
Would you listen to The Fiery Cross again? Why?
Probably not. I'm enjoying working through this series but this book is much more slow moving with a lot more dialogue.
Which character – as performed by Davina Porter – was your favorite?
I think she does a great job with Mrs. Bug.
Any additional comments?
I'm truly impressed with the narrators ability to handle so many different accents in this series. Every character jumps to life so clearly with the voice and accent she gives them. With one very notable exception: Brianna. For some reason she talks like a tipsy, old timey, world-weary, Wild-Western barkeep... or something along those lines. Not a young woman who grew up in Boston... or even an American from the 1960s... its really very disconcerting. But truly she's the only character performance that strikes me as "wrong."

Will her knowledge of America’s tumultuous revolution be enough to guide them through a dangerously uncertain future?

Couldn't get attached to the characters
Revisado: 02-11-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes. I loved the world-building and the descriptions of the terreria etc.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
There was a fair amount of boring dialogue and I wish that space had gone to giving the actual plot and events of the story more intensity. When you are talking about potential war, human suffering and major social change you'd think there would be a very palpable sense of intensity and some emotion. It seemed like I should have felt a sense of urgency or of there being "a lot to lose." Instead everything felt a little numb. Also I feel like there was an opportunity lost in dealing with the ramification of life extension. He went into it a little but I think there was a lot more room to delve into that in a less cerebral way.
Which character – as performed by Sarah Zimmerman – was your favorite?
None. I had an extremely difficult time getting attached to the characters. The performance was fine... this was more an issue of how they were written. I just couldn't get myself to care about them at all.
Do you think 2312 needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. Because I don't want to read it.

Valuable lessons if you can wade through delivery
Revisado: 09-22-15
What aspect of Caroline Myss’s performance would you have changed?
There is a lot of food for thought and some good insights here if you can wade through the evangelical preacher delivery. It strikes me as deeply hypocritical (and odd) that the admonishments to not judge and not be negative were delivered in such a heavy-handed, judgemental and negative manor. I felt as if she were trying to shame me... not very empowering.
Any additional comments?
I recommend reading Louise Hay before getting into anything by Caroline Myss.

Historia
Leading health blogger Jimmy Moore and researcher and internist Dr. Eric C. Westman join forces again to explain the powerful therapeutic effects of a ketogenic diet—one that combines a customized carbohydrate restriction, moderation of protein intake, and real food-based fats—which is emerging in the scientific literature as a means for improving a wide range of diseases, from Type 2 diabetes to Alzheimer's and more. Simply eating a low-carb diet alone isn't enough, and Moore and Westman tell you why. Have you looked at a low-carb diet simply as a means to lose weight? What if you learned that combining a low-carb nutritional approach with a high fat intake produces a powerful therapeutic effect on a wide variety of health conditions that most people think requires medication to control? That’s what Keto Clarity is all about. Jimmy Moore, a leading low-carb diet blogger and podcaster, has reunited with his Cholesterol Clarity co-author Dr. Eric C. Westman, a practicing internist and low-carb diet researcher, to bring you the crystal-clear information you need to understand what a ketogenic diet is and why it may be the missing element in your pursuit of optimal health. This book includes exclusive interviews from twenty of the world's foremost authorities from various fields bringing their depth of expertise and experience using this nutritional approach. Moore and Westman explain why ketosis is normal and how this nutritional approach is being used therapeutically by many medical professionals. You will find a step-by-step guide to help you produce more ketones and track your progress, real life success stories, and more. The solid evidence for nutritional ketosis in dealing with many of the chronic health problems of our day is presented, including but not limited to: epilepsy, Type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovarian syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome.

What did you like best about this story?
I felt like it was broken into bite sized pieces I could absorb. Good mix of personal experience, scientific information, advice from medical experts and practical how-to.
Any additional comments?
Love that this is narrated by the author. His southern drawl and southern mispronunciation of certain words brought a smile to my face.

A preeminent geneticist hunts the Neanderthal genome to answer the biggest question of them all: what does it mean to be human? What can we learn from the genes of our closest evolutionary relatives? Neanderthal Man tells the story of geneticist Svante Pbo’s mission to answer that question, beginning with the study of DNA in Egyptian mummies in the early 1980s and culminating in his sequencing of the Neanderthal genome in 2009.

Not what I thought
Revisado: 06-12-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
It would depend on who that friend was!
Were the concepts of this book easy to follow, or were they too technical?
Very very technical but still I caught a lot of it because he describes things very well. I have a mere bachelors degree so this was... a lot for me. I by no means caught it all but did learn a lot.
Any additional comments?
I really thought this would be more about our ancient ancestors and Neanderthals and give a lot of details about the past. Instead it is very autobiographical and primarily about the author's (admittedly) interesting career and life. As a result I have learned A TON about the science behind the dating of ancient artifacts and fossils. If you are not in the science field it could also be an eye-opening view into the nature of research... rustling up funding and the race to publish... the competition etc.
It's not what I thought it would be but it has definitely been interesting and I have learned new things. Boy do I wish I were smarter though...

In Boundaries in Marriage, Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend, counselors and authors of the New York Times bestseller Boundaries, teach us that healthy boundaries are the property lines that define and protect you and your spouse as individuals. Once you have them in place, a good marriage can become better, and a less-than-satisfying one can even be saved.

Great material, Valuable insight, weird narrator
Revisado: 01-13-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would highly recommend the book but not the audiobook. The book offers a lot of wisdom and gives case examples to illustrate points. The strangeness of the narration is too distracting and detracts from the book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
non-fiction- no characters
What didn’t you like about Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend ’s performance?
Contrary to what is listed the narrator is not either of the authors- it's someone else- I believe the same person who narrates the other boundaries books. This is a self-help book not a dramatic novel. There's no need for the narrator to try and "make things more interesting" by reading so dramatically and making each person in each case example sound like they are ready to jump off a bridge. No one talks that way. It makes it hard to take it seriously. He also gives everyone this weird accent- it's almost like a long island accent but not quite. It's distracting and I would suggest reading this as opposed to listening to it.
What did you learn from Boundaries in Marriage that you would use in your daily life?
That a good marriage and good boundaries start with having good character and good boundaries with yourself.
Any additional comments?
Wonderful book. Weird narrator.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can't entirely explain.

Surprisingly lovely
Revisado: 06-06-13
If you could sum up The Raven Boys in three words, what would they be?
Surprising. Funny. Imaginative.
What did you like best about this story?
Very pleasantly surprised by this imaginative and fully-fleshed story. I had my doubts but the author uses the paranormal subject matter as a context to tell a story that is really all about relationships, family, longing and belonging. With clever dialogue and a restrained hand she paints a vivid picture of well-realized characters and spirited relationships. The sense of mystery that winds through the story hasn't (yet) crossed over into cheesy or creepy (for me). Hope the sequel lives up to the original! I will be reading it.
What about Will Patton’s performance did you like?
Persephone.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes.
