Historia
Wright Thompson’s family farm in Mississippi is 23 miles from the site of one of the most notorious and consequential killings in American history, yet he had to leave the state for college before he learned the first thing about it. To this day, fundamental truths about the crime are widely unknown, including where it took place and how many people were involved. This is no accident: the cover-up began at once, and it is ongoing.

An amazing story of a tragedy
Revisado: 04-28-25
A necessary and absolutely horrific story that Mississippi and so many others hope to erase. As a Mississippian, The Barn is a corrective to all the whitewashed history I was taught.
Mr. Thompson has knocked on all the doors that he could knock on when it comes to the Emmitt Till case. It’s absolutely beautifully written. That said, I came to dislike his voice intensely. He sounds like redneck Cookie Monster. My brother, I mean this sincerely: You’re a fine writer so go write, don’t narrate. But if you do, the word is “Memphis”, not “Mimfis.”

Heroism, villainy, and incompetence
Revisado: 02-27-25
A stunner of a book with at least one “Are you kidding me moments?” per chapter. It’s at turns gripping, infuriating, and impossibly sad as the Challenger astronauts race unstoppable toward Jan. 28, 1986. No notes.

Historia
For centuries, works of art have been stolen in countless ways from all over the world, but no one has been quite as successful at it as the master thief Stéphane Breitwieser. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight years—in museums and cathedrals all over Europe—Breitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, stole more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion.

Historia
The enigmatic and elusive filmmaker Stanley Kubrick has not been treated to a full-length biography in over twenty years. Stanley Kubrick: An Odyssey fills that gap. This definitive book is based on access to the latest research, especially Kubrick's archive at the University of the Arts, London, as well as other private papers plus new interviews with family members and those who worked with him. It offers comprehensive and in-depth coverage of Kubrick's personal, private, public, and working life.

Kubrick the genius
Revisado: 11-10-24
Here is Stanley Kubrick in all his insufferable glory: The insurance claim filing, Big Mac eating, eccentric, obsessive, warm-hearted, credit-grabbing, doting dad, penny pinching maestro who tortured writers, actors, film crews, and basically anyone who got between him and his vision who was just a Jewish kid from the Bronx who liked to take photos. This is a fantastic book. That said, if you were playing a drinking game and taking a shot every time the authors used the phrase “And so Kubrick returned to ‘Tromme Novella…’” you would need emergency medical attention.

Historia
Pete Rose is a legend. A baseball god. He compiled more hits than anyone in the history of baseball, a record he set decades ago that still stands today. He was a working-class white guy from Cincinnati who made it; less talented than tough, and rough around the edges. He was everything that America wanted and needed him to be, the American dream personified, until he wasn’t. Charlie Hustle tells the full story of one of America’s most epic tragedies—the rise and fall of Pete Rose.

Charlie Hustle is a homer. Pete Rose? Not so much.
Revisado: 07-06-24
A deeply reported story about the train-wreck of a life lived by Pete Rose. For everything in this book that Pete did that was 1. Selfish 2. Stupid or 3. A combination of selfish & stupid, O’Brien counters that by clearly and cleanly explaining why Rose was a great baseball player in his prime and why he - and the game - mattered. Problem was, baseball is just a game, and life isn’t baseball. Rose just couldn’t get out of his own way when it came to life. Meanwhile, Major League Baseball spent so much time and money going after Rose that no one recognized that steroids were taking root in the game and would irreversibly change it — a very valid point the author makes.

Historia
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the landscape of television began an unprecedented transformation. While the networks continued to chase the lowest common denominator, a wave of new shows, first on premium cable channels like HBO and then basic cable networks like FX and AMC, dramatically stretched television’s narrative inventiveness, emotional resonance, and artistic ambition. Just as the Big Novel had in the 1960s and the subversive films of New Hollywood had in 1970s, television shows became the place to go to see stories of the triumph and betrayals of the American Dream.

Difficult Men, Fantastic Book
Revisado: 05-21-24
For all of us who gave so many hours to watching, rewatching, and obsessing over the Crown Jewels of the Peak TV “revolution” this book is a dishy, juicy, trip down TV memory lane. At the end of the day, they were *just* TV shows and they were works of sustained brilliance.
Having said that, that Vince Gilligan (who ran the happiest writers’ room) was also the showrunner to have the biggest success after his main show (Breaking Bad) ended while all of the ruthless, selfish, cut-throat showrunners all had their days in the sun and haven’t come close to repeating their feats again might speak to being nice to people on the way up because you’re gonna see them on the way down (Matthew Wiener.)

Historia
When Max Marshall arrived on the campus of the College of Charleston in 2018, he hoped to investigate a small-time fraternity Xanax trafficking ring. Instead, he found a homicide, several student deaths, and millions of dollars circulating around the Deep South. He also opened up an elite world hidden to outsiders. Behind the pop culture cliches of “Greek life” lies one of the major breeding grounds of American power: 80 percent of Fortune 500 executives, 85 percent of Supreme Court justices, and all but four presidents since 1825 have been fraternity members.

Historia
After years of living abroad and covering the Global War on Terrorism, Luke Mogelson went home in early 2020 to report on the social discord that the pandemic was bringing to the fore across the US. An assignment that began with right-wing militias in Michigan soon took him to an uprising for racial justice in Minneapolis, then to antifascist clashes in the streets of Portland, and ultimately to an attempted insurrection in Washington, D.C. His dispatches for The New Yorker revealed a larger story with ominous implications for America. They were only the beginning.

Behind The Scenes With America’s Collective Psychosis
Revisado: 02-26-24
This is the best, most depressing, most horrific and bravest account yet of 2020 and the Jan. 6 riots. As Mr. Fogelman says, if there is another American civil war, it will be waged by people who are laboring under delusions. Required reading.
