Historia
Nacho had zero intentions to make friends. He certainly had no plans to be put in the unenviable position of being the leader of a guild. But if there’s one thing that he excels at, it certainly isn’t cooking. No, he’s far better at rolling with the punches and making sure the people around him survive. When literal monsters are everywhere, that’s the kind of person you want in charge. But this world isn’t what he’s been expecting. Things are different. He is different. By succeeding so much, so fast, humanity has unlocked the next stage of the Juxtaposition, years before they’re ready for it.

Nacho Gets His Stride
Revisado: 02-02-25
I was hesitant to start this trilogy, but the cover art drew me in. After listening to the first volume I really enjoyed Dakota Krout 's style. Now that I have gotten the remaining entries into the story of Nacho and his friends in The Juxtaposition I am enjoying it even more. Great writing, great narration. Love the experience!

Historia
It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Disappointing abridgement
Revisado: 05-04-24
The Audible Original abridged version of 1984 severely guts many of Orwell's well-developed themes.
While NewSpeak is mentioned in this condensed version of the story the whole horror of controlled speech is dumped down the memory hole, as is the book's epilogue. I suppose this is par for the course in a product coming from Big Bezos.
While there is some mention of the issues of freedom of speech and thought the core is rushed through so the listener is not allowed to ponder how closely the IngSoc principles are coming to life in the West today.
The freedom to say that 2 + 2 = 4 is being erased today. Orwell would recognize the banal face of O'Brien the torture lord of the Ministry of Love trying to force J. K. Rowling to recant her heresies. Orwell would recognize the Hate Week occurring on multiple college campuses today demanding that Jews surrender and be murdered by terrorists.
Above all Orwell would consider the butchery of his story a travesty. Having just finished listening to his collected Essays on Audible I feel he would reject the script used here. It turns a novel into a short story and cuts out the valid social commentary and warnings about loss of history.
High marks for good audio production values. Not so high for emphasis on the sex noises that take the place of storytelling.

Dr. Pasulka's more important book.
Revisado: 12-19-23
First, I prefer Dr. Pasulka's narration to that of the professional narrator used for her first book on this topic. She knows the material better and knows where to use vocal emphasis better.
Second, as good as "American Cosmic" is, this book is more important.
The value of examining the experience, as opposed to physical artifacts, is critical for humanity. The artifacts are a distraction from the real event.

Historia
When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity. Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

A Classic of Science Fiction
Revisado: 02-14-23
For a story written in 1932, this work holds up well.
A world of control. All media, all education, all language, and all religion are tightly controlled. A world not far off from today.
Works of philosophy that sought to enlighten are considered pornograhy, while depictions of sex are ubiquitous.
There are reservations where the nonconforming are kept. At first, we see the First Nations people on we learn of others.
This classic is brought to life by the talents of Michael York. The well-known actor helps draw the background of this story with a variety of vocal personalities.

For decades, the tiny Jewish shtetl of Kreskol existed in happy isolation, virtually untouched and unchanged. Spared by the Holocaust and the Cold War, its residents enjoyed remarkable peace. It missed out on cars, and electricity, and the internet, and indoor plumbing. But when a marriage dispute spins out of control, the whole town comes crashing into the 21st century.

A Tale Of Love
Revisado: 02-09-23
This is a novel that asks us to suspend our disbelief only a little. A town in modern Europe that could go a century without being swept up in the events that made the twentieth century so terrifying.
Then, a need comes upon the people of this town to contact the outside world. They fear a crime has been committed, and they can not resolve it themselves.
What happens next is a dizzying, cautionary tale of innocence and arrogance.

Historia
Renowned and beloved as a prizewinning novelist, Dara Horn has also been publishing penetrating essays since she was a teenager. Often asked by major publications to write on subjects related to Jewish culture - and increasingly in response to a recent wave of deadly anti-Semitic attacks - Horn was troubled to realize what all of these assignments had in common: She was being asked to write about dead Jews, never about living ones.

In the depths of despair hope springs
Revisado: 01-09-23
Dara Horn has collected several of her essays that examine the way that dead Jews hold a position in the world that living Jews do not.
Examining different dead Jews around the world and through time Horn sees a recurring theme. The world at large puts the dead and departed Jews on a pedestal, but resents the living Jews.
The conclusion of the book offers a brighter outlook that I hope the author still retains.
