Historia
Something weird is happening to the Los Angeles freeways - phantom cars, lanes from nowhere, and sometimes unmarked off-ramps that give glimpses of a desolate desert highway - and Sebastian Vickery, disgraced ex-Secret Service agent, is a driver for a covert supernatural-evasion car service. But another government agency is using and perhaps causing the freeway anomalies, and their chief is determined to have Vickery killed because of something he learned years ago at a halted Presidential motorcade. Reluctantly aided by Ingrid Castine, a member of that agency, and a homeless Mexican boy....

Tim Powers AND Bronson Pinchot??!! I've died and gone to heaven ..This book is an incredible homage to LA, noir, mythology, ghost stories and what it means to be family - all wrapped up in Tim Powers' multileveled and multilayered storytelling. It's action packed, intellectually challenging and poignant. Obviously, I'm a fan girl and this book will take place along my other Powers favorites. As far as narration goes - more fan girling over Bronson Pinchot's pitch perfect delivery of this complicated tale ..simply amazing.
Powers may not be everyone's cup of tea - he really does give the imagination a workout - but if you like meat on the bones of a good story - I'd spend that credit!

Historia
When Greta Helsing, doctor to the undead, is unexpectedly called to Paris to present at a medical conference, she expects nothing more exciting than professional discourse on zombie reconstructive surgery and skin disease in bogeymen - and hopefully at least one uneventful night at the Opera. Unfortunately for Greta, Paris happens to be infested with a coven of vampires - and not the civilized kind. If she hopes to survive, Greta must navigate the darkest corners of the City of Lights, the maze of ancient catacombs and mine-tunnels underneath the streets.

Vivian Shaw is rapidly becoming on of my favorite authors. Her prose is thoughtful, imaginative, and meaningful in a genre that is often heavy on plot and light on character development. Shaw writes with a certain pace and musing quality that I find both surprising and terribly engaging. There is a philosophical bent to both Strange Practice and Dreadful Company that adds depth to both her characters and the world they live in. Concepts of family, vocation, authenticity, self-determination and morality are all explored in a meaningful way without being overbearing or detracting from the arc of her storytelling.
Shaws books strike me as elegant, and optimistic. Her characters, both human and supernatura,l are multidimensional and interesting. Her heroine is strong, smart, and refreshingly independent, and very well written. Most of the characters in her books are people ( or monsters ) I would dearly like to know in real life.
The best compliment I can give, however, is how disappointed I was to come to the end of Dreadful Company and know that - for now anyway - my time with Dr. Greta Van Helsing and company was over.
Finally, I wouldn't want to post this review without mentioning the spot-on narration performed by Suzannah Hampton. Ms. Hampton manages to perfectly capture every character from humans to vampires, and from demons to well monsters - naturally and believably.
If you like urban fantasy, and appreciate a well-crafted thoughtful story, along with superb narration, I can highly recommend both Strange Practice and Dreadful Company as being well worth a listen.
