Historia
In his eye-opening new book, Perv, the award-winning columnist and psychologist Jesse Bering argues that we are all sexual deviants on one level or another. As Bering takes us into the lives of a woman who falls madly in love with the Eiffel Tower, a young man addicted to seductive sneezes, and a pair of deeply affectionate identical twins, among others, he challenges us to move beyond our judgments and attitudes toward "deviant" sex and consider the alternative: What would happen if we rise above our fears and revulsions and accepted our true natures?

I enjoyed listening to this book on Audible. As a mental health therapist with a sex positive orientation, I found this book well worth my time and a fun listen.

rings mostly true
Revisado: 10-10-21
I listened to the whole thing within 12 hours because I was curious to see what his thoughts are since it's his life's specialty. I wanted to see if it would track with my own experience. I'm a therapist and I work with child victims of abuse and their families, but on rare occasion with offenders and children who have both been victims and offenders.
I would say I agree with 80% of what he says. However, he is more optimistic than I am because so few people, much less sex offenders, are willing to be openly apologetic, humble and commit themselves to rectifying their mistakes.
The best thing about this book perhaps is that it highlights the fact that there really should be no stereotypes since offenders are all so different in their "MO" and their level of insight/self- awareness.
Equally important is to take the time to consider that many of these incidents of abuse are complex and warrant an examination of the context that surrounded the abuse. Preventing further child abuse (and sometimes healing) requires an honest inquiry into the many aspects of the problem... and not just an automatic condemnation and banishment of offenders to suffer without any hope for redemption.

Historia
"Are you one of us?" a patient once asked Marsha Linehan, the world-renowned psychologist who developed dialectical behavior therapy. "Because if you were, it would give all of us so much hope." Over the years, DBT had saved the lives of countless people fighting depression and suicidal thoughts, but Linehan had never revealed that her pioneering work was inspired by her own desperate struggles as a young woman. Only when she received this question did she finally decide to tell her story.

this book is soulfood
Revisado: 08-28-20
This limited but potent compilation of Sam's podcasts is truly brilliant. It left me feeling hopeful, and believe me that is no small feat. I have been listening to Sam for a few years now, and this collection of some of the best discussions in the world about the mergence of humanity, tech, and consciousness (yes, I just made that claim) gave me a way to make sense not only existential angst, but of human goodness as well. Now it's my job to actively marinate myself in what I learned from the book and apply it to my doings in the world. Thanks to you, Sam, for making this book...and to all of its marvelous contributors.

awful, robotic narration ...great content
Revisado: 12-08-19
The content was good, but I was barely able to get more than 10 minutes in to the book because of the farfetched voice of the narrator. It sounded like an AI was programmed to read the book. It was very unnatural but I'm still glad I listened to it because the message was good.

Leonardo da Vinci created the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and engineering.
