Historia
In Eisenhower vs. Warren, two-time New York Times Notable Book author James F. Simon examines the years of strife between them that led Eisenhower to say that his biggest mistake as president was appointing that "dumb son of a bitch Earl Warren." This momentous, poisonous relationship is presented here at last in one volume. Compellingly written, Eisenhower vs. Warren brings to vivid life the clash that continues to reverberate in political and constitutional debates today.

The Idealist and the Pragmatist
Revisado: 10-11-24
This story of President Ike Eisenhower and his Supreme Court Chief Justice, Earl Warren, reminds me a lot of Abraham Lincoln and Thaddeus Stephens in a prior American era. One seeks the straightest, shortest path to civil rights, while the other seeks reforms that will succeed and last, without symbolic stances (what today we might call "virtue signaling").
They were both strong on civil rights in an era when civil rights needed skillful promotion, and both had their great successes. Their differences in approach led to social friction and political controversy.
While I admire Lincoln for his successes moreso than Stephens for his principles, I find myself admiring Warren for his successes moreso than Eisenhower for his caution. Still, Eisenhower is one of the great Presidents (some would say the last great Republican President), and it's good that his accomplishments and approach are remembered.

Ukraine is currently embroiled in a tense fight with Russia to preserve its territorial integrity and political independence. But today's conflict is only the latest in a long history of battles over Ukraine's territory and its existence as a sovereign nation. As the award-winning historian Serhii Plokhy argues in The Gates of Europe, we must examine Ukraine's past in order to understand its present and future.

This book doesn't go into intense detail, but it's sheer breadth is duly impressive. Next, I'd like to read a book that goes into deeper detail about events since the Orange Revolution.

Historia
Vividly written and exhaustively researched, Jonathan Eig’s King: A Life is the first major biography in decades of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.—and the first to include recently declassified FBI files. In this revelatory new portrait of the preacher and activist who shook the world, the bestselling biographer gives us an intimate view of the courageous and often emotionally troubled human being who demanded peaceful protest for his movement but was rarely at peace with himself.

So much of the debate about the Second Amendment is in scholarly journals and academic papers written by scholars and judges, or directed towards other scholars, law professors, attorneys, and judges. Trying to wade through the extensive footnotes and references to legal cases and historical precedents known only to the academic elite is more than enough to make anyone feel hopeless.

A Slightly Dated, but Reasonable Summary of the Gun Rights View
Revisado: 01-16-24
This book would be a good companion for a book from the gun control view, such as "Loaded" by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, and a moderate view, such as "A Well-Regulated Militia" by Saul Cornell.
If reading that many books is too much a challenge, the book "Gunfight" by Adam Winkler covers does a good job of covering both sides of the gun policy debate in a single, entertaining, and informative volume.
Since I know that many will wish to ask, I personally lean towards a middle way where gun regulation in the interest of public safety is allowed, but cannot disarm the populous overall and should be revoked or automatically expire if they do not result in a measurable benefit to public safety.

Historia
On January 6, 2021, insurgents stormed the U.S. Capitol, an act of domestic terror without parallel in American history, designed to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. In a resolution six months later, the House of Representatives called it "one of the darkest days of our democracy," and established a special committee to investigate how and why the attack happened. Celadon Books, in collaboration with The New Yorker, presents the committee's final report, the definitive account of January 6th and what led up to it.

Revisado: 11-19-23
To what extent was she genuinely a white supremacist, and to what extent was she faking it in a self-sacrificing attempt to keep our country safe? And is it true that, if the FBI had taken her seriously, the Oklahoma City Bombing may never have happened?
This intensely researched, gripping narrative sets out all the facts and leaves the conclusions as an exercise fir the reader.

Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated.

Solid History
Revisado: 11-07-23
Guess what? White people were awful to the Native Americans. Shocker, right?
But, yeah, the details are worse than you imagine; the justifications are flimsier, the betrayals more blatant, the massacres more brutal.
The unbiased truth is devastating to those raised under a cozy blanket of comforting bias.

Your Guide Back to Reality
Revisado: 08-12-23
There are a lot of myths about US history, especially in popular history (which does not often refer back to verifiable reality for verification).
A lot of history books that talk about historical myths are fringe outsiders railing against the mainstream based more in passion than in evidence. This book is the opposite. This is scholarly historians pushing back against the faulty assertions of cranks and conspiracists, pointing the reader back towards evident reality.
Some history is harsh, reminding us of ugly truths. This book is not for the faint of heart or the narrowly dogmatic. You'll likely see a few of your misconceptions challenged. But if you love learning new truths more than holding on to your preconceptions, this is your way forward.

Historia
Few people are aware that John Moses Browning - a tall, humble, cerebral man born in 1855 and raised as a Mormon in the American West - was the mind behind many of the world-changing firearms that dominated more than a century of conflict. He invented the design used in virtually all modern pistols, created the most popular hunting rifles and shotguns, and conceived the machine guns that proved decisive not just in World Wars I and II but nearly every major military action since. Yet few in America knew his name until he was into his 60s.

For Gun Hobbyists More Than History Buffs
Revisado: 03-29-23
Rather focused on technical gun engineering, with some historical flavor. Moralizing, personality, and psychology are lightly touched, if at all. Not even very much of the business of guns, but plenty of discussion of the pros and cons of specific gun models.
It's fine for what it is, and it doesn't aspire to be anything greater.
The voice actor deserves mention for the high quality job he has done.
